Using pictures of roads and airports and saying this 4 lanes looks like that 4 lanes just isnt accurate. Its great for a rough comparison, but nothing more.

 

Why would you say that? I'm talking strictly about the roads.

because you are eyeballing something that isnt a valid reference. Roads vary in width, especially between cities, despite the number of lanes.

Ok so duy9161 gave me an idea to use vehicles as a reference.

 

Using a scaled model of the feltzer, and the Michael rappeling screenshot, I tried to get an accurate estimation of the scale of one of the highways in V.

Making the street on the plueprint equal to the same distance as the stacked up feltzers I obtained this scale.

I appreciate the amount of work you put into this, but I do disagree with it in the sense that the highway is very zoomed in (and low quality). You can probably fit another 1-2 feltzers in there. Another thing to note is that you arranged the feltzers in a straight line, while the highway was viewed from an angle. Look at the lines on the highway, they are angled, therefore you could in fact fit more cars there.

 

The thing that I find striking is that in the final comparison of the cities, you are basically saying that a 4 lane highway in IV is the same size as the 8 lane one in LS. However different the scales may possibly be, I think that would never happen.

Not a chance. The first picture has lanes that could probably tightly fit two cars within them. The LS pic maybe 1 1/4 a car. When amplified that's a big difference.

edit: Oh i see what you did with the median. Once again, this just isn't accurate enough when you amplify it to scale.

I'm not saying that you are wrong. What I am saying is that you shouldn't tote your findings as irrefutable. My means of finding the scale has just as much room for error as yours, and we have two very different sizes. So to claim that LS is definitely bigger than LC is just not true

That's what I was aiming to prove, that in both pictures, two cars can fit in one lane. Like this:

 

 

But yes, you are right, I think we're both using eyeballing methods. I will try to find a more accurate method.

Shouldn't all the roads be scaled the same, I mean I see no reason why the city roads would be less wide.

I think in SA, the city and countryside roads had the same width. Let me check.

It seems that countryside roads are indeed bigger than city roads in SA (about 1 meter or so wider).

 

But the road leading to the hills in V does not seem to be a countryside road.

Los Santos doesn't do any of those.

You are forgetting three important things:

 

1. The roads in V seem to have a lot more traffic, therefore you can't travel as fast.

2. There are fewer skyscrapes (and tall buildings in general) blocking your view.

3. LC's streets are grid-shaped, while LS's roads are much more curvy and...random.

 

Those could actually contribute pretty significantly to the whole feeling of size.

When the two cities are close enough the same size, you cannot say that it FEELING smaller or FEELING larger is a fact, because believe it or not, there will be people who disagree with you. That it will feel smaller when we eventually get our hands on it is an OPINION. People are free to agree with your opinion and share that opinion but what you're saying is that it is a god damned 100% accurate fact and it can't be debated, wow.

Really ? At such a late stage in this thread, and thousands of posts later ? Where were you when the argument raged in it's peak ?

 

I'll keep it short. It is a big deal, because based on Rockstar's claims of how huge the map was, many people reasonably expected Los Santos to be bigger than Liberty City, and in real-life LA is huge and sprawling too. But as the released screenshots show, they did not give many people the impression LS was big, in fact it made it look a smaller than many people imagined it to be. The the blue map kind of confirmed that LS is just not as big many hoped it would be, many of us were expected a very realistic re-creation of LA, not just in looks, but size too. So far, it looks like the size part has fallen short.

 

Hence why it is a big deal for many.

even an ice cream sandwich knows los santos is bigger... nuff said! los santos is bigger than liberty city. the people that have played the game spelled it out in black and white for us. whether or not its a little bigger or a lot bigger i dont know. every other person that posts a comparison on this thread is way off the last persons estimate. we will find out when the game is released. i probably wont be in to rub it in everyones faces for a week or so cause ill be wrapped up in the game, but rest assured that ill be on at some point.

Some of these scale pics are laughable.  It's hilarious that people eat this stuff right up.  Anything they can do to prove that LS is bigger than LC.  It just simply is not the case, LC is larger than LS.  I'll do whatever everyone else is doing and make a map and cut the water out of LC (Because it's water isn't a playable area and doesn't count! Right guys?!) and skew it to fit the agenda that LC is bigger than LS.

I think the amount of people claiming that LC was bigger had been drastically reduced after the last wave of comparisons hit this thread. Nevertheless, I will re-post mine since I can't find any real problem with it and is based on more than just eyeballing:

 

 

I'll also leave it to you do decide if LC should be even smaller than that considering that the LC highway is much smaller than the LS highway with the extra large median and shoulders.

this is los santos choco. that pic on the right lil guy. you cant tell me what the east area is and everyone else here seems to be including it. just as is shown in the pic, i am willing to bet $100 that the area depicted in the picture on the right (los santos) is bigger than all of the landmass of gta iv.
