Map Size Thread

the map is (possibly) bigger than MC:LA.

I think you mean city in stead of map. It's an interesting tongue slip, because that is how some people act on here. Like LS is all of the map. I predict, using all the info and measurements from members here, that LS is around as big as IV plus 4 times IV in countryside.

I base this on statements by R* which say the whole map is 5 times IV and 3.5 times RDR, and reviewers from CVG who estimated that Los Santos looks like 20/25/30 percent of the map after seeing Franklin fall from a plane, and members here calculating that LS is as big as IV. I made some calculations using pictures from F4t4l1ty. I added up the landmasses he measured in square kilometers. I didn't feel like changing it to miles or going more than one number behind the comma because I was lazy, and because it doesn't matter since all hese statements are only approximately anyway.

Magic_Al said these were all scaled with an error of 1.068, but I don't care because I'm using it to compare games to each other and not for absolute sizes. So if they all have the same error then the comparison is still correct. But I would like to hear it if I made any mistakes.

SA = 10,9+6,5+0,1+1,8+6,9+2,5=28,7 km^2

IV = 2,4+0,1+2,3+2,6+0,1+0,1+0,8=8,4 km^2

RDR = 13,2 km^2

GTA V = 5 * IV = 42 km^2

GTA V = 3,5 * RDR = 46,2 km^2

GTA V with interiors > IV + SA + RDR = 28,7 + 8,4 + 13,2 = 50,3 km^2

I can't verify how correct all these statements are as I'm not technical, but I see they are coherent and that makes me think they are probably true. It's common sense.

How much larger? Put a number on it.

15-20% > LC - water

Size is relative, the only thing that matters is the vibe, atmosphere of Los Santos. It seems like they captured that, which is very important. Anyone who has ever lived in/been to Los Angeles knows that it is a city like no other, not because of the sheer size but because there is a certain 'feel' you can't find anywhere else, which is very difficult to explain. It's the city that either makes you or breaks you. I've lived in Hollywood Hills myself when I was younger and the latest pictures/stills really show the 'vibe' of the area. Admittedly much smaller and denser, but that's besides the point. Los Santos will feel just like Los Angeles and that's all that matters.

Yeah i've been there.

I recognize alot of places.

Yes, its relative. But the real life LA was huge, i'm not sure if LS gives you that same huge vibe.

I appreciate that countryside will be huge, but I hope that R* will add some small towns or at least settlements (like in SA) Without them it wouldn't be the same.

Hard to say at this point, but I would.guess fifteen to twenty percent, bigger

Don't worry, there are small towns. Take a look at this screenshot from E3 http://media.gtanet.com/gallery/gta-5-scre...ze/e3sony_5.jpg

That's a town right there in the lower left corner.

If someone else can confirm this, it's where we should start to measure the map. We don't need even 3D tools to start! You can draw a line over it using any free drawing tool and then use it to measure the rest of the city. smile.gif

Really rough estimate.

But that would make LS city 4 miles south to north. And 3 miles east to west.

9 square miles.

Again fast rough estimate.

Hmm... Not a bad size... When I calculated, I had 4 km n-s and 3 km e-w. Yours makes LS bigger. tounge.gif

Again, it really doesn't matter if what has been shown is much bigger than LC or not, if what is in the blueprint map and screenshots is all of LS then we're still gonna miss a lot of variety since we have no East LA and a considerable part of South Central LA missing.

Isn't the Los Santos equivalent to South Central actually the east side and part of south of the city? I think it's big enough to not get repetitive (if you get any satellite view of any residential area of any real life city you'll see what I mean).

The only thing that bugs me is that, as most of the pictures and video frames were already mapped, I still didn't figured where is this:

Well that what it seems like most people here want is "Bigger"( From what i've seen)

Oh thanks! I know this is off-topic, but when I watched the video, I probably was confusing them with those power lines or cranes in the background. biggrin.gif

So...

What is the consensus now? How big do people think Los Santos is? What about the entire map? I haven't read this thread since it had a little over 200 pages, so excuse my ignorance. smile.gif

It seems that it Los Santos is about the same Size as Liberty City's total landmass. Maybe a little smaller, maybe a little larger. Wether you're satisfied with that or not is up to you.

And Los Santos is about 1/9th of the landmass, and the landmass is about 2/3 of the map.

What do you base that on? CVG? CVG changed that statement to saying los santos is "20-25-30% of the island".

But they only had a limited view of the map, so how can they say how large it is?

What intrigues me is that in the CVG they are going over there notes and say that the R* rep told them that trevor was waking up on the South East part of the island right off the Alamo see which through them off due to map predictions

Recent previews and CVG have stated that LS is about 25%-30% of the landmass
