There's a reason they didn't say bigger than SA, IV, RDR, and Vice City combined.  It's because the "room to spare" that gets mentioned is smaller than VC.

Now that's some pretty flawed logic.

They didn't say how big the "room to spare" was because they either didn't calculate it, or simply didn't want people to know how big it is.

No, not really. They are trying to sell the game, by making it seem as big as they possibly can. SA + GTAIV + RDR + (another R* game) would seem bigger to most people than SA + GTAIV + RDR with room to spare.

I would assume they need to keep certain things secret, and so far the underwater is the least commented environment.

They did the same thing by revealing some of the game's features.

@Savage Los Santos is substantially bigger than Liberty City? Where's your proof that backs up your opinion? Everyone can have an opinion, but your opinion is not solid. And the only reason why people are arguing with you about your opinion is because you bash the living f*ck out of theirs and manage to insult them in the process. Countless times people have brought proof backing the fact that Los Santos is at best the same size or ever so slightly bigger than Liberty City, but there are also scales where Liberty City is considerably bigger than Los Santos. We won't know for sure until we have hands on the game, but we have a good estimate. 102 days..

The only thing that really disappoints me is the lack of East LA...or East Lost Santos in this case...there really isnt an east side =\

This. And the absence of the San Fernando Valley is what really brings me down. If they did decide to put in any of the areas from East LA or San Fernando such as Anaheim, West Covina from East LA and Burbank, Glendale from the San Fernando Valley what could they have lost? But obviously they have something in store for us as they've blocked out what lies North of LS and we haven't really seen a clear image of what's South and Southeast of Los Santos either. I have a feeling they'll surprise us with something though.

I'll bring forth this post again, since it doesn't really matter if the piece of land we're shown is much bigger than LC or not, we're gonna get the same variety since it's still gonna miss a big part of the real city, which is a shame, that is of course assuming we've seen pretty much all of LS.

haha! as i stated... los santos looks quite a bit bigger in my opinion based on the in game horse track. nobody will know til the game is released.

In the mapping thread I think I think someone pointed out a screenshot, the one with the US Bank Tower where Franklin, Michael, and Trevor were walking away from the Helicopter on the helipad and there was a road going Northwest from the Vinewood sign (opposite the road where Michael was driving in a trailer) and the road looks to lead to a somewhat decent sized area. The San Fernando Valley might still have hope of being represented in V. Fingers crossed.

I just stood on bottom step outside CJ's Grove St house and walked over to the fire hydrant. It was ~35 metres.

 

Then I load up RDR and stood on the McFarlane train tracks, SW corner of the platform and walked along the train tracks until I had walked 115 feet/35 metres. I ended up level with the small ladder of the water tower.

 

These 35 metre distances in each game do seem comparable and this means the scale is the same.

 

So all the people saying RDR is bigger than SA because the numbers are wrong and the scale is different etc, I don't see how you can be right anymore.

Thank you! Why don't people understand this? Saying different games have different scales is an obviously illogical statement. All the models in a game are sized according to realistic scale so that different artists can work on different parts and yet everything will fit together. Otherwise a horse might come from the art department being twice as big as a horse should be compared to John Marston. If things look realistically sized in the game world, then the scale of in-game feet and miles is right too. Why wouldn't it be right? Why would they even give the player distance-related stats if they weren't scaled realistically compared to the size of characters and objects and geography in the game? If you got an achievement for throwing a horseshoe 40 feet, let's say, shouldn't it look like 40 feet in the game? Is John Marston 2 feet tall? No, the game would say he's 5 or 6 feet tall, and the game would say 5,280 of those feet is a mile in the game. GTASA would ALSO say 5,280 of ITS feet is a mile, and one foot in GTASA is going to look about like one foot compared to CJ. That's what we mean when we say the scales are the same.

I already wrote a reply to a post for this topic that got locked, so I'll just throw it in here..

 

(the debate is now primarily whether or not the landmass is greater than, equal to, or less than the land portion of GTA IV, but frankly no matter what the city is significantly smaller because it still doesn't take up the same amount of space)

Then we were having a semantic discussion, because landmass was what I meant. I do think that they are only measuring landmass in that other thread too though.. But deffpony's opinion is that he is 85 percent sure that it is slightly smaller I think. And in GTA IV's water you could only go over the surface, there was no underwater awesomeness..

 

This game will be so much more in pretty much every way than IV. Bigger map, more features, more characters, more vehicle, underwater gameplay.. A city the size of IV will probably be sufficient for me. Maybe R* is right, and bigger would make it more boring. I'll have to judge it when I play it. When I play it I'm not going to judge it on some abstract fact comparing it with IV. I'll compare it on wether I like it, and there are games way smaller than IV that I like.
