Map Size Thread

Hi Guys,

 

I've done a lot of map scaling and comparisons and 3D blueprinting. And I've come to a really exciting conclusion. You're free to tell me if you think I'm wrong. But, the GTA V map will very likely be bigger than the GTA 3 map. (Background: engineering student.)

The streets on the IV map are too small compared to V's streets.

If your referring to the one using pixels as a reference point I say no way. Thats about the same size as the scale I made of how LS will NOT be scaled using the ESB. That's not really debatable. Not sure how pixels can be an accurate reference none the less.

 

@Chatterbox: you shoudn't just pick a map based on how it "looks" but on how the conclusion was obtained. If you click on the details links next to my scales you can see my methods are interesting to say the least.

If you were to take an average of the best estimations posted in this thread, everything seems to point to the two landmasses being very similar in size.

Agreed. Although my scales show LS being smaller by about 10%

 

But using the mean of everyone's map Id say its about equal or slightly smaller.

The simple fact is we won't know the answer to if Los Santos is bigger, the same size or smaller until we play the game ourselves and see the full map. Based on the screens it seems smaller to me and nothing in this topic has changed that however once I've played the game and the full map of the city is known this will possibly change.

Roughly, Los Santos is exactly the size of everything in California minus all the parts that are not Los Angeles.

I think the scales I posted, while having varied conclusions, are merited.

 

However there is always a small chance that there are crazy factors we aren't considering or are unaware of such as inconsistent building or street sizes. In that case LS could be much larger/smaller than we have predicted.

I agree. I felt the same way, but I thought it would be interesting to hear your opinion about it.

Inside the blueprint borders is an area of 33 square miles including water. The landmass is approximately 17-19 square miles. The entire blueprint including borders represents a grid of over 100 million square meters.

This is my comparison, using actual landmarks, The Theme Building (circle in front of LS airport) and the MetLife Building (GetaLife Building), both have about the same width in real life (about 100m). The grid is about .85x.85 miles if I'm right.

the VC stadium is a lot bigger than the VLS stadium

if anybody else has a better editor than MS paint, can you change the contrast for me?

I inverted the colors in paint, if that helps.

 

EDIT: Yeah, the airport is definitely visible, and this image pretty much confirms at this point that there is nothing south of Los Santos.

That's a good find man. Clearly looks like they photoshopped the image to hide something. Especially when you look back at the unaltered version.

that map looks great, it doesnt look bigger than rdr, gta iv, and san andreas combined though so id say its off. that and san andreas is way to big in that pic. its smaller than rdr
