Things you hate/dislike in GTA San Andreas

Recommended Posts

AlexGRFan97

Before you all jump on me, do learn that San Andreas is probably one of my all-time favourite video games, but boy is it flawed. I've had to split every single last nitpick into separate sections:

Gameplay:

  • As others have stated, SA gets incredibly lonely once you've beaten the main story. In III, Claude was a mute lone wolf with zero personality to begin with so it doesn't make much difference. Tommy led a gang, sure, but it's made entirely of disposable armored peds with no real members. Everyone else he tried to make friends with ended up backstabbing him. There are maybe a couple characters you'd miss after a while, but that's why there's cheats to turn Tommy into them. In SA, once you've finished End of The Line, that is the very last time you see CJ's family (Sweet + Kendl), any of CJ's friends (Cesar, The Truth, Madd Dogg), and the last time you saw any of the familiar faces from III/VC (Kent Paul, Ken Rosenberg, and even the bitch Catalina). Hell, even if my only choice was to do rampages with Maccer, I'd do it. There's a reason I have a save point before the final heist as for me it's the very last time you see any characters in any form. SA really could have done with a Replay Mission option, or brought some use to the mobile by allowing you to call up Sweet to have a good time or whatever.
  • The lack of a cheat code for turning all traffic lights red like there is to turn them all green. Would've made Supply Lines a cakewalk, and I wouldn't blame any player for using it to beat the mission.
  • I get that CJ is supposed to be a character with high morals, but you should be able to buy drugs from the drug dealer at least. I mean if even Vic Vance was corruptible in the end (and in my eyes he wasn't, and I don't GAF what R* says, that guy in the beginning of VC was not and never will be Vic), then CJ should be as well.
  • Rubberbanding AI during the Triathlon. You can have a good seemingly 1 minute lead over the opponents and once you make a single mistake they just blow by you.
  • The game is coded so that any explosion that occurs ingame is immediately attributed to you, regardless if whether or not you even caused it. This also includes deaths caused by explosions, which can royally screw up a no-kill run if someone decides to do a Final Destination on the freeway.
  • Changing clothes takes forever. Whoever it was at R* that decided a closet walking animation was necessary for every single minute article of clothing should be tied down in a dark room and beat.
  • The NRG Challenge is borderline impossible unless you are an elite player who knows exactly what he's doing. Otherwise, the rest of us need a Packer to use as a mobile ramp.
  • CJ seems to think it's a perfectly normal custom to eat his fast food at the till and hold up the line instead of sitting down at a table like everybody else.
  • This was only a problem back when I had a slow computer, but the Burglary mission clock and the ingame clock will go out of sync to the extent that you can still be robbing at mid-day depending on your machine's performance.
  • The main problem with 8-Track isn't the difficulty of the race, it's avoiding hitting those who can't race.
  • Out of all the possible ped models, why is the wimpy black guy by far the most prevalent? He has fight lines, but he almost never uses them as he's always scared off by what CJ or another character does. And yet, he's the guy who drives all the trains. He's the guy that appears in the countryside as well as LS. And he's the guy that appears in the most varied selection of traffic vehicles.
  • CJ can't climb the ladder at the docks that would save minutes of swimming back to shore if you fall in accidentally.
  • The vigilante mission attracts police attention, and can never end unlike the others. However, press R3 (on the PS2 version anyway) while trying to change the camera view and oops! There goes all your progress.
  • People do get annoyed over the RPG-ish elements of SA (working out, eating), but they don't really bother me. What does bother me is the concept of girlfriends which are like the predecessor of IV's Roman. The only one I got outside of Denise and Millie was Barbara out of necessity so I wouldn't lose my weapons when I died, with my only weakness now being busted.
  • At the time of its release, SA was the only GTA where you could actually swim instead of immediately drowning, and the only GTA where bailing from your car wouldn't cause you to lose health. It took quite a bit getting used to the other games because of this.

Graphics:

  • The game does not offer native 1080p support. Oh, but you can use this weird 1680 x 1050 resolution that NO-ONE on the face of the planet uses.
  • Even though some vehicles have them, reverse lights don't even work. I do know of the existence of IVF but the point is it's such an easy feature they could've added in less than a day.
  • Whilst the moon has proper phases in the PS2 version, the PC version just has it always on full moon.
  • Certain weapon models are laughably simplistic compared to what other games offered at the time. For example, the Desert Eagle ought to have used the cutscene model instead of that ugly blocky mass that it uses instead. The brass knuckles were a lazy job too. And the Chainsaw doesn't even have a chain, let alone spin!
  • Random ass lights that don't have a light source. The Windy Windy Windy Windy Street has quite a few of these, as do certain tunnels in the countryside.
  • While we're on the subject, the game didn't need those "high-altitude" jets that were just beams of light flying aimlessly over the night sky when the game had the ability to render actual aircraft.
  • The side skirt tuning part on regular vehicles ought to have been a bit better than "tiny piece of plastic mounted towards the rear wheel".

Physics:

  • Due to the way bicycle physics work in this game, it is impossible to do a full vertical flip as the game will automatically self-right your bike and flip it horizontally while in the air.
  • Get hit in the back, take damage at the front. Make sense it doesn't.
  • Sometimes the Jetpack flies high with the nimbleness of a Hydra, other times it just makes you run fast.
  • Drive any truck that can hold a trailer, and try turning really hard from a standstill once you've attached a load. Just try.
  • Flipping a vehicle upside down is as good as loading it with a brick of C4 and lighting the fuse. I get it's a quirk of the 3D era games but it does get annoying after a while.

Vehicles:

  • Some vehicles appear in traffic only once in a blue moon. If any of you here are up to the challenge, I dare you to film yourself (on a completely unmodified game) collecting a Manana, an FCR-900, a Utility Truck and a Euros into a single 4 car garage anywhere on the map in under 3 hours of gameplay. You are not allowed to use the import docks or any unlocked spawns in the case of the FCR-900. Hell, to make it even easier, the clock only starts once you've found the first of these four vehicles.
  • Several stalwarts of the 3D era just plain don't appear in San Andreas, the most notable of these being the Idaho.
  • Some planes don't fit in the LV desert hangar, such as the Nevada and AT-400. In addition, once you've landed anywhere you have to abandon your plane as you can't buy your own additional hangar at the airport.
  • You can't use your personal ride in most missions, forcing you to abandon it regardless of how much money you put into it.
  • The Rhino apparently has a super acidic body coating that is harmless to humans but devastating to vehicles, including the Rhino itself.
  • License plates aren't stored by the game like tuning parts and damage proofing is.
  • It is impossible to completely "restore" a Tampa as the license plate will always be at an angle.
  • Take a personal vehicle of one of the deuteragonists, drive around with it for a bit then come back to see that their vehicle is auto-duplicating.
  • Out of all the vehicles that would make much more sense being a lowrider, the Tahoma is one for whatever reason.
  • The Mower and the Sweeper do nothing at all.
  • The one reason you would want a Police Maverick in the first place is the one thing that doesn't come on the version that isn't piloted by two ghosts.
  • In addition, the one reason you would want a Leviathan is also the one thing that doesn't come with it outside of the mission Up, Up and Away.

Weapons:

  • Kill a cop with a chainsaw, and then say goodbye to it as the game automatically chooses to pick up their baton, without any player input at all.
  • You will never have the Thermal Goggles ever again once you've got to The End of the Line, as there is no spawn point ingame you can pick a pair up. Never mind, looks like there is, though I had no idea about it.
  • You cannot de-equip or swap out certain weapons such as the brass knuckles, you just to have to live with them. Same goes for dual wielding when you don't want to use twice the ammo but have to.
  • The very fact that R* felt it was necessary to give limited ammunition to the spraycan and camera. The Fire Extinguisher I understand, but not those two.
  • Four sex toys, yet only two assault rifles. The Ruger from VC would've been nice, you know.
  • The way the game occasionally replaces a weapon in a certain slot without warning you or switching it back after a mission.

I hated the fact that running over peds slowed down your car as if they were as strong as a lightpost. What was the point of that?

Nah, more like vehicles made of woods.

Which reminds me, i don't like how vehicles seems very lacking in mass.

I mean, you can sprint and push front part of car to rotate it 180 degree in matter of seconds. It's feels even more ridiculous for aircrafts.

Its also ridiculously easy for cars to roll off its wheels (at least compared to racing games)

If there is one thing i really dislike in GTA SanAndreas, its the sounds of the weapons. Every single firearm sounds really cheap and stupid, especially the smgs. It even bothered me back in the days. Why didn't Rockstargames just use the sounds from GTA Vicecity? At least this game had some decent sound effects.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks that every weapon sounds from every 3D GTA besides SA are not any better than SA. Maybe because I grew up with that game that I have never get annoyed with it.

The problem with the Thermal Goggles is that once you pick one up, they're gone forever.

Loved most everything about the game, just a few dislikes:

1. The Zero side missions

2. That you have to kill Ryder and Big Smoke

3. The Quarry missions

4. N.O.E.

5. Catalina- Cant stand her

6. That you are pretty much screwed if your car rolls over- It took me forever to pass the mission where you had to drive Caesar in his Savannah to go take pictures of T-Bone Mendez and those guys because the car kept rolling over and blowing up.

Don't you love driving out to the middle of nowhere only to fail the mission because you rolled the car or didn't take all of the pictures in time? I don't care for that mission because it's such a long-ass drive.

Most of them sound like cap guns *cringe*.

I loved how varied the map was, and I loved how the Hunter had very little auto-stabilization (so could do flips and all that kind of thing). The Jetpack was great too, and the Rustler. Probably some of the best aircraft of any GTA game.

Dislike? That I've played it to death I guess.

The only thing I don't like about the game is that the map is too big to manage for the game. It is hard to accomplish 100% completion from the game.

Wrong Side of the tracks, Supply Lines, you can't flip cars over. Especially when cars flips. Because when you're almost to the objective which is far as f*ck. The stupid car decides to flip over from some stupid sh*t causing you fail. If you haven't saved well you're gonna have to drive all way back then back to where you were originally going. Very annoying. Dancing too. Why is it always that same f*cking song?

Collectibles being required for 100% completion. Even more irritating when you've spent hours using a map searching for all the tags just to finish up with "99 tags" - a few weeks ago that happened to me and I was like are you f*cking kidding me

Maps often aren't good enough, unless they're very detailed and have images. This is especially true with tags - which other collectables host 100 objects scattered all over the map, the tags take that same number and condense them all in one city. If you're unfamiliar, a YouTube video guide is probably your best bet. While a smaller area makes hunting for them quicker, it's easier to miss one out of a cluster if you're not paying attention. As it happens, the tags were my least favourite. By the 80th one I was sick of the sight of Los Santos.

In the chain game i was doing tags many times and made them also on my own save, isn't making sick yet, its more like contest for myself to see how quickly i'm going to get them this time!

I loved pulling trailers all around. The lawn mower and towing cars at stop lights. Hated that one stop light at that weird intersection. As a truck driver of SA, I could barely get through the light before it turned red.

I thoroughly enjoyed the bike riding, as well.

Anything related to the damn "mafia"

The riot was great! Have that bike and ride fast to the red country, get ALL the ammo. Head to that crazy agents house guy, stack up on all mini gun. Get coffee then join the mayhem. Boom!
