Archive
I've recently wanted to start playing San Andreas on my PC again but when I got my disc (v2.00) and put it in and launched the executable, nothing happened! I checked my Task Manager and there it was in Processes , gta_sa.exe. It was just sitting there, the memory usage wasn't going up or down. I thought this was odd so I ended the process. Next I tried running it from the disc's Install executable and it worked! Only problem, my save files weren't there in the menu. I couldn't believe it. So much that I re-installed the game and then tried to run the executable to play it and you guessed it, nothing. I can't seem to find the problem and this is really bugging me. I wouldn't mind running the game through Install.exe so I downloaded a save file and dumped it in my San Andreas folder in My Documents but it STILL didn't work. I'm dying to play this game again and I don't want to lose my progress. Thanks in advance (and sorry in advance if this has already been covered). P.S This is my first post on this forum so bear with me. Also cookies to anyone who can help . Specs: OS: Vista Graphics Card: GeForce 630 GT 2GB Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 RAM: 2GB No Mods (v2.00 off disk) I don't think my specs will help in this case but they are there anyway and yes, I know my PC sucks. lil weasel
If your game was already installed and as you say it has been sometime since last you played. Try Deleting the gta_sa.set file. (That's also the Asprin for any sudden problems.)
Archive
Yup, that was the first thing I did and is basically the first thing I do for any problem I experience in SA. It doesn't work, I don't know why the exe doesn't load. It usually should have that disc icon when you click it to tell you it is reading the disc but that never came up. Miro
Are you using any mods or cracks? Besides, try this: End all running non-essential processes - whether it be an Anti-Virus, Window Blinds, whatever. Alternatively, set the compatibility mode of the executable file to 'Windows 98'. Do so by: right-clicking gta-vc.exe (default: C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto Vice Citygta-vc.exe) -> Properties -> Compatibility tab -> check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:', and select 'Windows 98 / Windows Me' from the drop-down menu. Apply, OK. And as pictures speak a thousand words, click here. Lastly, you could try to un-install and re-install the game, if you haven't done that already. Good luck. Archive
Your compatibility solution thankfully worked! For some reason though my save files are still not there. They were from the same version but they don't seem to be in the menus but they are in my SA User Files Folder. Ideas?
Miro
Hmm, this is pretty strange. Are you sure that the save files are in the correct location? Go to Start -> Search and type in gta_sa.set at All files and folders and check out if there aren't two documents folders. Besides, can you upload your save game here and give us the link? Also, make sure you press Load Game when you enter the game Menu, seems a little vague though to tell you this, but still. Dead (Retired)

Then search for the *.b file.
Archive
I haven't had the chance to try these ideas but I will when I can, I'll reply back if sucessful or unsuccessful. Thank you.
Archive
Here is the link to one of my save files, I only just downloaded this one before making this thread. Do you want me to upload my own older one too? Here is the link: http://gtasnp.com/download/36372 Oh and the only other place I found gta_sa.set were in Public Documents. I deleted it and it didn't do anything. Also I searched for my save file and they weren't anywhere besides my User Folder. I tried to override the new save file with the one I downloaded and it turned out to still be the new one. Sigh. lil weasel
Us looking at your save file won't help you. 1. Play the game and do a save. 2. Search for *.b 3. The search should show you where your save game is. 4. Win98 may be saving your games into the Public files. 5. Otherwise the save games should be in START > User Name > Documents > San Andreas user file.

I'll put my old save in there and see what happens! EDIT: It works! to lil weasil and miromiro Thanks so much!
