I dont think franklin wants to get out the hood per say, because rockstar destinctively created seperate parts of the map for each protag. I just think franklin wants to be "the man" in the streets. Hood fame.

I hope you're right. i think it would be good if we get to set up our own street operation.

A lot of people were expecting a Mexican protagonist since it was set in L.A and were fine with it. But I guess since it was revealed that one of the protagonists who was gang banger was black, everyone thinks "been there done that, its a recycled CJ". Mexican cartels/gangs are what's going on in the ghetto part of L.A and many wanted to see that side of the story.

Franklin has been the least marketed Character. He's being saved for Trailer 3. So to say he's the least favourite is like saying San Andreas and Vice City are the best, GTA V is crap. And please, don't apoligise. I'm not defending Franklin. I have no bias towards any characters. I'm merely trying to rationalise why Franklin isn't as popuular

My prediction is Trailer 3 and last major push of into and marketing will feature Franklin more. We will finally see some action from Ganton/South Central. We'll see gang banging, car modification and some new features.

Rockstar are going to use the 3rd trailer to entice us with the action. The 3rd trailer will appeal to a more casual gamer when they see some gang banging action in the 'hood. No doubt the 3rd trailer will have some G-Funk music or some sort of Epic Hip Hop track. So this will be a new dimension of GTA V we've not yet seen. For us hardcore fans or more hardcore gamers that would have view the trailers a few times already, we've been shown mostly...

Michael, Beverly Hills, nice scenery, Los Santos is nice but had it's dark sides but it's got nice things in the first trailer > then Trevor we got desety territory and country. This guy lives there and deals drugs out that way > Then 3rd trailer.... Franklin, guns, gangbanging, car modding etc.

So you see, our 3 characters come from different backgrounds and they each almost represent the 3 major and obvious parts of the map.

Michael (rich, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, security), Trevor (countryside/desert) and Franklin (South Central, poverty and violence)

It's probably all pretty obvious for anyone to make my "my prediction" but I just thought I'd put it out there and then check back in July or when ever trailer 3 is out and see if I was close.

I think Franklin is definitely being held off for marketing purposes because to show so much as Franklin would be showing South Central and Rockstar seem to be keeping that for us later and we'll see his popularity soar eventually.

I also had an idea that to show Franklin at the start gangbanging, people might think we're getting San Andreas 2, which I'm sure Rockstar wanted to avoid.

his popularity might soar, but it wont surpass Michael or Trevor's

You wont know that until people play and beat the game...then you can create another poll and well see who wins then it could change since we know very little about the game

You're right.

Edit: I know nothing, that was a hasty judgment to make.

I just can't find the hook? Trevor's a junkie arsonist, Michael's a softy guy with a family full of personality, Franklin has a dog?

Maybe it's just ethnocentrism. But the others seem more interesting. I do believe though (I hope so),  that Rockstar won't pull stereotypial hood sh*t with the black character. Or did they already?

Damn.

Just because Franklin is from the hood, it don't automatically make him a stereotypical black character from the hood. And if you read the previews and watched the trailer, you would have seen that Franklin is actually trying to rise above and get away from petty, gangbangin' hood stuff and move on to bigger things that will make him much more money. To me, that appears quite interesting development in his story so far.

I don't see what's so interesting about Trevor just yet. Okay he's a crazy, psychotic and unpredictably violent guy, wow. He randomly destroys things, shocking. Show me something I have not seen before. I'm not saying Trevor is boring, I don't know for sure if he is, but so far he don't excite me a great deal.

Michael interests me, I wanna see how he balances his family life and I wanna know more about his snitch status.

Trevor interest people of this forum because a large segment seem to be the type of people that gain a sense,(false sense) of manhood from doing outrageous(or at least in their minds), dangerous, unnecessary and quite frankly dumb things in the vain of the show Jackass.(i'm sure you know the type of people I'm talking about.)

For the record though, I do like Trevor and the other 2 characters.

that is dumb....most people like trevor because he is the embodiment of GTA..... crazy, insane, pure chaos

Whatever you say hillbilly.

I suppose then, in terms of the storyline of V, that it makes sense that they picked a black protagonist over a Mexican.

With the cartels and Mexican street gangs flourishing in Los Santos, the black street gangs have less power and are now lacking the motivation they had in the 90's. It gives someone like Franklin more of a desire to get out of the hood because there's nothing there for him anymore, hence why he hooks up with Mike and Trev in the first place. A Mexican would still be able to make a lot of money in the hood, leaving less desire for that character to be involved in high-scale heists.

It seems to me that this topic was created with the sole intent of inciting racial arguments.

But i'm worried that Franklin will be a bit preachy like all recent Rockstar protagonists, as long as they add the caveat that they've done bad stuff too, apparently that makes it fine to be condescending to others. Like him having a go at Lamar for slinging dope and throwing up gang-signs, maybe Lamar likes doing those things... perhaps Franklin should worry about his own predicament. Of course this may not actually be the case, as i'm basing it on limited information and very little in terms of context.. But it would be consistent with their most recent characters.

Another thing that worries me is he seems to be determined to get out of the hood, while i will be determined to get him back to it. I want to experience all the ghetto  business. So his goals may very well be completely at odds with mine.

I hope i'm wrong though.

I think you might have got Franklin's 'preachy' comments towards Lamar a little mixed up. I don't think Franklin is being condescending. From my understanding, Franklin is just saying to his friend that he has no more time for low-level street stuff and gang activity that makes him little money, and that he wants to spend his time and energy doing bigger stuff for bigger money.

As for Franklin trying to make it out of the hood, well the fact that he's trying could be interesting, he could get dragged right back into it, and have to do all that hood stuff again after all. So let's just wait and see.

Dan houser said he's being held back by his friends in game informer.

I also wonder if franklin has any family like a brother or sister.

Agreed. It's surprising that, between three protags in a game based on L.A., apparently not one is hispanic. Originally, lots of folks here thought Franklin ("red car guy", "hispanic guy") was Mexican. Trailer 2 and the new screen shots changed all that.

I guess a black protag from South LS is cool in the sense that not only is he a throwback to CJ/GSF in SA, but he also provides a nice contrast to SA since this is the "gangbanger in a post-gangbanging world" (as the GI article put it). Still, it would have been nice to play as a Mexican "gangbanger in a post-gangbanging world" coming out of East LS.

Who knows, maybe Franklin is blaxican?

Exactly. Who cares?

Franklin will be a good character, most likely. Who cares if he is less popular than Trevor and Michael? confused.gif

As I said a few posts up, having a Mexican protagonist wouldn't have made as much sense in the confines of V's storyline. It would have only been a demographical choice, when storyline should always come first.

That's possible. As i said, there is very little information for me to go on, and no context for his comments in the trailer either. I'm just saying that it would be quite typical of recent Rockstar protagonists for that to be the case.

It may not be. He may end up as a kingpin that still operates in the hood but has a whole crew of people under his command while he directs the operation. I think that could make for some really cool gameplay. Maybe Franklin realises through Lamar that people will die for their street ideals, and decides to exploit that fact to his advantage.

That would make for an interesting character progression. I'll need to know more about him before i can get enthusiastic about him.

That's what I'm hoping to see and there is evidence supporting that. It could lead to a very interesting side story of Franklin being in the middle of two rival gangs and such.

Actually, you make a good point there. Times are hard for black street gangs these days, which could make Franklin and Lamar's story that much more compelling. icon14.gif

Still, I hope we get a nice taste of both the Cartels and Chicano culture in V.

Times are not hard for black gangs these days. Most have learned from the past and figured out its better to conduct business behind close doors and stay off the corner. I lot have also scraped the, You must wear this color rule also. I use to be about standing on the corner throwing up gang signs. Now its about money Its a business and they have learned out to conduct it as such.

can we lock this thread now

I'm a idiot, my bad.

Good to see you realize that.

on topic: The forums hardly reflect the overall consumer of GTA. We are the hardcore GTA fans. There are a lot of black people who buy this game without any real knowledge of it before hand. They'd probably vote for Franklin on familiarity alone. The point people are trying to make here is it doesn't matter. R* made a game that has something for everybody to enjoy.
