Dick Valor
How can he possibly say Chicago is not iconic ? He's crazy. General, I agree that Chicago is a fantastic city for all the reasons you mention in your post above. I've visited it several times, love the culture, the museums, and the food , and can't deny it enjoys a lot of historical and cultural significance here in the States. But with respect to being an "icon", how many people (besides enthusiasts like ourselves) actually know what it looks like? Everyone knows the Statue of Liberty, the Hollywood Sign, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Vegas strip... but is the same true of Sears (Willis) Tower or the Miracle Mile? I'm not so sure. Chicago certainly has lots to offer in the story department, I'm just not so sure what sets it apart in the gameplay department. They don't call it "the second city" for nothing... it's unfortunately overshadowed by NYC. I'm afraid a Chicago-based GTA would just feel like a poor man's Liberty City (which pains me to say, believe me). Anyway, this is why is I personally think Chicago is insufficiently iconic to serve as a GTA setting, despite being a huge fan of the city irl. Washington, D.C. is the only other city I think would make the cut. New Orleans is another city that would be great (like Chicago), but no one knows what it looks like besides the relatively tiny French Quarter. Also, (not directed at you General), what's with people wanting Hawaii? Far Cry 3 is just one of many examples of recent open world games set in a tropical paradise. Like Chicago, I love Hawaii, but I just don't get it. It would be way more fun to visit Hawaii irl than in a video game.

Unlike Far Cry 3, Hawaii has a lot of built up urban areas, as well as the amazing paradisical surroundings; New Orleans, and Southern Louisiana in general, compliments the culture of the French Quarter with being a very Red State with lots of swamps (something we haven't really had in GTA); and Chicago/Detroit have Lake Michigan and the potential of snow. While these places aren't as internationally known as somewhere like New York or Los Angeles, that in my mind doesn't deter from people wanting to play the game. They aren't going to go back to Liberty or Los Santos any time soon, what other options do they have? Vegas is a one-trick city surrounded by desert and San Francisco would only work if it were the entire Bay Area being included.
Ben73
I would like to see a modern day, massive Vice City. After that I would love to see a new city we have not been to yet. Don't like the idea of returning to any older GTA city after that.

Jon_Gravelli
Dixieland GTA would be pretty cool. Think GTA: VCS trailer park, but supersized, just like the people that live there!
grandola
They should name drop new city names in GTA games... I'd love for R* to do a south version... Atlanta Miami and the FL keys with a Cuba island would be DOPE!!

Don't like the idea of returning to any older GTA city after that. Yes this entirely and expand on the idea of varied countryside or surrounding area outside city. I can think of a lot of fun situations that would take place in the swamps and miami is a pretty interesting location. They could also expand on the wildlife that will be in V and make it a diverse and coherent living breathing mini florida hopefully bigger than V (which i think will be huge). This game will come out for ps4/xbox720 in like 5 years so it will be unbelievable graphically, technically as well as have top notch world building. ChrissDaMan
I think that the next GTA will be even bigger then we are imagine. I mean, maybe thay make one huge game with Vice City, Liberty City and San Andreas (Los Santos, Las Venturas and San Fiero) If not they make another Vice City only befor that Then it would be a cool idea to maybe add new citires the year to come after, first ofcourse those^ i mentioned above then they add Paris, Rom etc.. this is just an idea of mine, i mean shoud'nt there be tecnalogi to cover this by then? That will not happen. Stop smoking that high purity crack. Its just an idea!

You definitely have a very valid point. But you see, in this case I think there is two good sides of the coin. I will agree with you to some extent. You are right, Chicago is a great city of great reputation and significance in the USA, but as an iconic place that's well known world-wide, yeah you are right, Chicago has been overshadowed by New York City in that respect. And with Chicago being very similar to New York in terms of architecture and looks, it would seem there is even less of a reason to use it as a GTA location. I would not say a Chicago-based GTA would be a 'poor man's' Liberty City - but I do see what you mean. I was more talking about using Chicago for GTA location after a new, modern-day Vice City game has been released sometime in the future (if that ever happens), probably by the time the next-gen consoles have been released are in full swing. I want a new VC game first before anything else. After that, it would be pointless for Rockstar to go back to Liberty City AGAINt, I cannot see the appeal in that, and it would just feel more than a tad bit repetitive - GTA IV is still fresh in our memories, even though the game is just over 5 years old. So, the next place to be used as influence for a GTA location I would recommend would be Chicago. Okay, point taken it's not as iconic or world-renowned as NYC, but it's still a great city with a great reputation and important world significance. And it's direct relevance to GTA is huge. Chicago is home to so many major street gangs like Gangster Disciples, Vice Lords and Latin Kings, Mexican drug cartels have a major presence there, and the Mafia and various mobs have had a long history in the city. Chicago's very high crime and murder rate, ever-ongoing gang wars, culture of city corruption among so many other things make it great place for a brand-new GTA location. I still think Rockstar could do something special with Chicago.
DJ_McLovin
I'd like to see them do New Orleans or the DC Metro area (Baltimore/Washington DC).

evoluon--720
A GTA game based in a fictional version of Johannesburg South Africa during current times. Theres a huge metropolitan area there-a strong European/American influence in the government/media/culture. Slums/Villages on the outskirts diversity + segregated communities street gangs/violence/drug trafficking
