dohertyboy
ok before everyone bashes me and this topic get locked I understand R* messed up universe thing. Ok so this is my theory just after gta IV came out R* were ready to start development of V they were checking feedback to see what the next installment should be about, all they say was bitching about bringing back the 3D era characters and stuff. But R* knew that that was a big no-no because they would be contradicting themselves by breaking their era laws. Therefor they decided to give us an alternative, I believe that with Michael and trevor they gave us the slightly aged- alternate universe Claude and Tommy Vercettie. Spiritually of course its not really tommy and claude just an alternate version of them. With trevor u get a shoot first ask question later, deranged psychopath, A.K.A Claude, and with Michael you get a cool calm and calculated gangster from the east coast AKA tommy vercetti. Also with franklin believe what were getting is the other side of CJ, the hood rat who wants to get out of the ghetto and make a name for himself in the criminal under world. I had more to say but I have forgotten, my appologies. Yours sincerely, Doherty Boy
GroundZero
When did Rockstar mess up the universe/era thing? It's not their fault that some people cannot understand/accept this... (no offence)

dohertyboy
When did Rockstar mess up the universe/era thing? It's not their fault that some people cannot understand/accept this... (no offence) I 100 percent accept. I just don't know the reasons behind but it doesn't matter they're the developers they could say CJ was an tranvestite alien and no one could question it
AtomicPunk
I think what you're saying seems plausable. They're not paper cut-outs, just In spirit.
DarkDayz
Yeah I think everyone can agree that the characters we have for V are SHADES of previous characters, there is no doubt about it, Dan Houser practically openly admits this when describing the characters in the Game Informer print describing Michael as the 'typical GTA protagonist' so to speak. So yeah you're 100% right that our new protagonists are shades of previous ones, they will take all they have learnt from the old ones and what was great about them and implement them into the new ones. I don't think they are really that strict on the era's as things have crossed over, brands etc. I think they are just more concerned about keeping it fresh, new and modern by not repeating any characters. Tommy only really work in the 80's and everybody loved him. Under no circumstance are they going to be lazy and use Tommy for example in a new game, because we may grow to hate him and it's just lazy and wouldn't feel fresh. We loved VC and Tommy, we loved CJ and SA. They won't risk ruining that by putting them in new games, when it would be more beneficial to just make new ones to fall in love with. rjmthe2nd
Michael - A Older Tommy Vercetti after Vice City, when the drug game is over,80s died out, and he lost his gang etc,f**ked around and now is in Protection. Franklin - If CJ Had a Son or If CJ Was against Gangbanging, as a different universe way being the opposite, but still is apart of Families, still some similarity in that. Trevor - A Psychopath, like Claude (not really that crazy...) but i see Trevor as a Modern Day Phil Cassidy...All About guns, drugs and AMERICA Baby... the 3 Era was the best Era because it had more games in it then any other ERA So Far...so yeah. Red XIII
The ones who are crying about past characters are most likely the people that are too young to play, rockstar knows this and just ignores them. It has have already stated why they have introduced multiple characters.
shattered-minds
I do believe that the 3 protagonists are a mixture of those archetypal characters. It's not so hard to see the similarities between them and I think the people that beg to differ in a denial for some reason. But I also think it goes deeper than that. The biggest problem with nearly all sandbox games is the big disparity between what the character wants and what the player wants. Take GTAIV, during the missions, Niko was reluctant to do any killing, all he kept saying was he wanted to keep out of crime. Then not soon after he's then driving down the pavement at 100mph mowing people down, killing hookers, getting in shoot out with cops and then the next mission "Cousin I told you, I don't want any trouble!" So now you have 3 characters that want to commit crimes. You also have 3 different characters that you can attach yourself to. Prefer the cold, calculated bad ass? Play as Michael. You like the idea of a small time hoodlum wanting to do bigger things and make it to the top? You've got Franklyn. And if you just want to watch the world burn, there's always Trevor. I don't think it has anything to do with the whole 'universe' thing, people have taken that far too literal and created all sorts of rules about what can and can't cross between the universes. When all it really is, is Rockstar's way of saying "I know this is Liberty City/Los Santos, but it's a different one that has no connection to the one in GTAIII and SA" they can include or exclude anything they want. They can include a road named Grove Street. They could even have 2 rival gangs called The Grove Street Families and The Ballas that or in no way related to the story or SA, but ever present in their respective neighborhoods throughout the game. "But wait!" I hear you say "they can't have the gangs or the street because that would mean they are corssing the universes, how can they do that?!" Well, because they can. No matter what they include, its still a different Los Santos with a different history, even if you meet a guy named CJ in the game.

GarrowsKai
I don't think they are really that strict on the era's as things have crossed over, brands etc. This issue has been raised before (mostly by those who were desperate for V to basically be San Andreas Version 2.0, with the same characters etc.) and the answer is simple. The brands like Sprunk and the car makes are not vital to the story line, so therefore can cross universes, it's the characters and other story specific elements which are confined to their own eras. The only possible exception is Love Fist, as they had some missions in VC and have been featured in V Artwork, although that is possibly the extend of their influence in V. He's stepped a level up in his life by showing proudly the stars and bars and redneck mentality. Now if he could just get rid of newman and get Si from Duck Dynasty, he will be complete.
