Introduction to Weapons in GTA IV

Weapons played a major role in every GTA game. Likewise, in Grand Theft Auto IV weapons play a major role in the game. There are a total of 15 weapons ranging from bare fists and RPGs. Some changes in shooting and weapons have been made in the game to make it more exciting and adventurous. Weapons are harder to find in GTA IV rather than in it's predecessors and the locations have been moved to awkward places. The weapons have much more realistic shootings and many more new things are introduced in the game. But however the numbers of weapons have been decreased to 15. While additional weapons are available in the downloadable episodes of Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

The New Features.

[+] Weapon pickups have changed. Rather than floating in the air like in the previous games the weapon pickups in GTA IV lie on the ground with an orange color glow surrounding it to get the attention of the player.

user posted image

user posted image

[+]The protagonists shoot as shoulder perspective. Rather then the third person view in the previous installments.

user posted image

[+] In the previous III era games the player had to take cover while shooting behind boxes, vehicles and other solid objects by crouching.

GTA IV introduces a feature which allows the player to take cover by finding a near-by object by just a press of the cover button.

When pressed the cover button the running into cover, rolling into cover, sliding into cover, and going from cover to cover.

[+] Another amazing feature is "blind firing". The player can fire while being full covered without exposing major parts of the body. That way the player can reduce the damage but this also reduces the accuracy. The player can also throw explosives without damaging the player.

[+] The Ammu-Nation shops are now no longer available and they are replaced with underground gun shops which are located in basements and alleys. If the player have gained enough respect with any of the contacts such as Little Jacob(GTA IV), Terry Thorpe(The Lost and Damned), Armando Torres(The Ballad of Gay Tony) they can call them to deliver weapons at a low price.

[+] And instead of buying the same weapon a lot of time to increase the ammo, the player can buy one gun and buy additional magazines for a smaller amount.

[+] The weapons available in GTA IV are available in both of the downloadable episode games including the additional weapons. The additional weapons in The Lost and Damned are not available in The Ballad of gay Tony and vice-versa.

Melee Weapons

Melee weapons are the weapons that are not firearms and used when the player doesn't have firearms or when one is not needed by the player.. In this state the player can counter/disarm and the fact that pressing Circle/B are 'Light' attacks were as pressing Triangle/Y are 'Heavy' attacks, this heavy/light also applies for knives and bats.

Fist

The fist represents the unarmed state of the player. With the fighting stance or unarmed the player can punch, kick, dodge attacks and do combo attacks. Fighting unarmed with the fist is one of the best ways to injure a person without killing them. With the fist selected as the current weapon the player can pick up various objects such as bricks, bottles, mugs, sex toys and candle stands etc. Once picked an above mentioned item the player cannot switch to other weapons unless it is thrown away. Below is a video showing various fist fights in the game.

Knife

user posted image

The Sylvester Stallone's knife is back in IV. They are very efficient and a armored NPC can be taken in about 3-5 slashes. Knives are very important if you need to kill without gaining a lot of police attractions and if you need to kill someone in a jiffy. Due to the speed of attack the enemy won't have any time to recover again.

Your favorite playing equipment is back to be swung left and right to beat the sh*t out of your enemies. The baseball bat can also be used to block attacks and also by swinging a bat the player will be able to disarm an opponent and it can kill opponents with a hit to the head, unless by using heavy attacks you can kill most opponents in a two hit combo. In the Lost and Damned the player can use it to attack opponents in a bike race.

Pool Cue

user posted image

The Pool Cue is found only in the downloadable episodic content The Lost and Damned. This is very similar to the baseball bat. It too can be swung from left to right and use to block attacks and can also be used to play pool. This pool cue can be obtained by starting a game of pool but however once a race is started it is replaced with a baseball bat. Despite it's shorter length in appearance, the pool is identical to the bat.

Thrown Weapons

Thrown weapons are usually explosives that are thrown either underarm or over arm by the protagonists. These weapons are useful when taking down groups of enemies. Thrown weapons have developed over time since the GTA III era. Now the player can throw forwards with precision aim and can be thrown from vehicles. But the player must be careful when throwing these such as overcooking grenades, being within the blast radius of a grenade and walking into the flames of a Molotov can result in injuries or even death of the player.

Molotov Cocktail

user posted image

The Molotov Cocktail is a effective weapon that creates a large burst of fire upon the target. The player can also toss a Molotov backwards to cut off any pursuers. The player must make sure that he is in a safe distance so that he doesn't get caught in the flames of the blast which will result either in death or serious injuries. The Molotov can be used to destroy a vehicle or even take down personal targets since the flames will keep the enemy helpless.

Grenades

user posted image

Grenades can be said as the most lethal thrown weapon in the game- both to the player and enemies. It have a higher damage capacity and a larger blast radius than a Molotov. Like the Molotov the grenade too can be thrown over handed, tossed underhanded or dropped while running or tossed while driving. Grenades are more effective than Molotovs for in-car use because grenades have a higher blast radius and can easily wipe out any pursuers. However he player must be careful when doing this because the player's own car might get caught in the explosion.

Pipe Bomb

user posted image

Pipe bomb is a thrown weapon shaped like a pipe that is featured only in the DLC The Lost and Damned. It creates a he explosion and has a high blast radius. The Pipe Bomb can also be cooked to shorten it’s detonation period just like the grenade. The Pipe Bombs have a significantly greater blast radius and deal more damage as a result; additionally the less circular shape prevents the explosives from rolling straight under cars or past the target.

Sticky Bombs

Sticky Bombs a.k.a. Satchel Charges are explosives in the DLC The Ballad of Gay Tony which stick to vehicles or objects for remote detonation. Unlike GTA San Andreas these bombs do not stick to people. Once a bomb has got stuck the player must press the D-Pad or alternatively shooting the charge itself. The player can only have ten placed at any time, with an eleventh charge causes the first to disappear without detonation, in Multiplayer the maximum amount is two with a third having the same effect. When this charge is cooked inside a car it will cause beeping but it will never detonate and once thrown from the car the timer resets to 90 seconds. Once the player have completed 40 drug wars Sticky Bombs are sent to Luis's apartment.

Handguns

Handguns are the most popular and widespread types of firearms in the game. They are not very powerful but if used properly it can be very effective especially to headshots. Handguns have a decent range and very good for medium range targets while long range target won't be very accurate. They can be used while driving but using a submachine gun is far better than using a handgun.

Pistol

user posted image

The Pistol which can be said as the most common handgun throughout the game is an effective weapon due to its high rate of fire and decent range. Unless a submachine gun is not available the Pistol is a good choice for doing drive-bys because it has a high rate of fire, ammo capacity than the Combat Pistol. The pistol can be used effectively if the player patiently aims at the head which will result in one-shot-kill. The pistol take about 3-5 shots to bring death unless a headshot.

Combat Pistol

user posted image

The Combat Pistol is a more powerful handgun than any other in the game. It have a 9 round magazine so the player sacrifices a lot of ammunition for this. However, the Combat Pistol can kill almost any enemy with just a single shot and headshots with a Combat Pistol emit a large cloud of blood. The Combat Pistol too can be shot while driving in a car but due to its low amount magazine and semi-automatic power make it useless while doing a drive-by. But if the player is skilled he can use it to kill a rival driver with just a well aimed bullet.

Automatic 9mm

user posted image

The Automatic 9mm is a handgun which is featured in the DLC The Lost and Damned. Like the name says this gun have a high rate of fire that the user might even think this is a machine gun tounge2.gif . Yeah, the Automatic 9mm have a higher rate of fire than a sub machine gun and just a touch of the trigger will empty a whole 17-round magazine. This automatic feature makes it awesome for doing drive-bys and it have an awesome accuracy.

The Pistol .44 is a new handgun in the DLC The Ballad of Gay Tony, with a high velocity for quick and accurate kills. This weapon is far more powerful than the Combat pistol but have a very low rate of fire. It takes about 2 shots to kill an armored target (1 shot to kill an unarmored). But however this weapon has the slowest rate of fire and takes a lot of time to reload. But however, this weapon have a fantastic range exceeding that of a SMG and matching the AK-47.

Shotguns

Shotguns are extremely powerful firearms that are usually short range and it takes only about 1-2 shots at short range to take out a target. Shotguns fire slowly so they can't be trusted on fast moving targets. They are very useful when taking down a small group of enemies while taking cover.

Pump Shotgun

user posted image

Due to its short barrel and pistol grip it is a very powerful but extremely short range shotgun. It is more powerful than the Combat Shotgun but it lacks range. This weapon is superb for close range combat and can take down a target by one shot at close range.

Combat Shotgun

user posted image

The Combat shotgun is a semi-automatic and powerful shotgun which is very helpful in taking down enemies quickly and efficiently. It is less powerful than the Pump Shotugn and has a high ammo wastage but it is useful to take down enemies at medium range and to slow down enemies. Whenever the player enters a Police car or another law enforcement vehicle he is given one of these with 5 shells if the player doesn't have any other type of shotgun. The Combat Shotgun in The Lost and Damned have some minor physical changes than the one in IV and The Ballad of Gay Tony, it have a pistol grip and a tactical stock like an M16.

Sawn-off Shotgun

user posted image

The Sawn-off shotgun is extremely powerful and devastating at close range. It can be used to do drive-bys while riding a motorbike (not cars) and can set a car quickly on fire by shooting quickly. It holds only two shells per-reload and short effective range but however it have more power than other shotguns. Most of the time it is a 1 hit kill but sometimes it takes 2. This weapon fires and reloads faster when on a bike rather than on foot and is only seen in The Lost and Damned and never seen in GTA IV or in The Ballad of Gay Tony.

Automatic/Explosive Shotgun

The Automatic/Explosive shotgun featured in The Ballad of Gay Tony is a semi-automatic weapon that can be used to take down multiple targets quickly. It uses either standard shotgun shells or exlosive rounds which destroys almost any targets. It takes only about 2 shots to blast off a regular vehicle. The Automatic shotgun kills a target in one shot at a close range and can strike down an enemy at a distance.

Note: If the player switches from the Automatic Shotgun to either the Pump Shotgun or Combat Shotgun, the player loses any extra shells beyond 80. Also, if the player switches between explosive rounds and standard shells, the player loses all units of the previous ammunition type.

Note: If the regular Automatic Shotgun is a separate weapon from the Explosive Shotgun; this means that in order to switch ammunition, the player must discard their Automatic/Explosive Shotgun and lose their ammunition reserve.

Sub-Machine Guns

Sub-Machine guns are light weight firearms that are very effective at medium ranges and can be used while running and gunning at targets to finish them off. They cannot be trusted a lot at long range. For best results the player must shoot at bursts at medium range and short range. These are the best to use when drive-bying and are the strongest weapons that can be used while doing so. They have a good accuracy and a high rate of fire.

Micro SMG

user posted image

The Micro-SMG is a very light-weight SMG with a decent range and an amasing rate of fire. It have a 50 round magazine and due to it's incredible rate of fire this can be a little hard to control. The Micro-SMG is not as accurate as the SMG but due to it's 50 round magazine and incredible rate of fire make it a good weapon for blind-firing and drive-bys.

SMG

user posted image

The SMG is a powerful sub-machine gun that has the double range of a Micro-SMG and the range of almost an Assault rifle. It has a high rate of fire and 30 round magazine which makes it suitable for drive-bying but the Micro-SMG is far more better for this purpose and the SMG is suitable for attacking purposes. The NOOSE officers and the FIB officers use this weapon to take down the player at a 5 and 6 star wanted level to take down the player.

Gold SMG

The Gold SMG which is a gold plated sub-machine gun that is covered with a thin plating of gold. Yusuf Amir is often seen with this weapon and it seems to be his primary weapon. It is almost very similar to the Micro-SMG but it have a higher rate of fire, 30 round magazine and poor accuracy because Luis fire this from the hip. Also the reload time is long. Since, this gun havee a high rate of fire this is the best gun for doing drive-bys and also ground battles. But the only disadvantage is the accuracy. There are four ways of obtaining this weapon. It is given to the player as a reward alongside Yusuf's Super Drop Diamond as a reward for completing all his missions. It can also be purchased from Armando after completing the game and it will spawn in Luis' safe house after completing 50 drug wars.

This weapon which is exclusive in The Ballad of Gay Tony is a silent, accurate sub-machine gun with a 50-round magazine. This weapon is deadly accurate and makes it an awesome ground combat weapon but however it have a less stopping power so it takes longer to reload. Unlike other SMGs this weapon cannot be used while driving it can be only used by a cheat or a hack. Some NOOSE officers and FIB officers’ uses this weapon. Compared with the SMG, this weapon is accurate but does less damage and takes longer to reload.

Assault Rifles

Assault Rifles are something between sub-machine guns and sniper rifles. They are very powerful and also very accurate than sub-machine guns and also more expensive than them. These weapons cannot be used while driving vehicles. Assault rifles can be fired both in bursts and also in single shots but it is most effective when fired in bursts.

Assault Rifle

user posted image

The Assault Rifle is the primary assault rifle in the game. It have a good accuracy and is very powerful, even more powerful than the Carbine rifle but it is a bit untrustworthy when it comes to very long range targets but the Assault rifle have a higher rate of fire. The Assault rile can kill a NPC in one headshot (2 in multiplayer) and can normal take down a enemy in 2-4 bullets. In GTA IV there are two reload animations in the game. When Niko is standing while reloading, he will cock the gun with his left hand, but when he crouching while reloading, he will take "out" the magazine, puts "another" one in and cocks the gun. It is unknown why two reloading animations are present. Maybe it is an error Rockstar have made. smile.gif

Carbine Rifle

The Carbine rifle is a very powerful advanced assault rifle featured in GTA IV and it’s DLCs. The Carbine rifle is more accurate but less powerful than the Assault rifle and also it is more expensive than the Assault rifle. It is sued by NOOSE officers and also FIB officers and also by some LCPD officers who guard high-security areas. In this weapon too the re-loading animation error where when Niko is standing while reloading, he will cock the gun with his left hand, but when he crouching while reloading, he will take "out" the magazine, puts "another" one in and cocks the gun. Unlike in the previous games this gun has an accessory rail with a drum sight mounted to it. The Carbine rifle cannot b fired from a vehicle except when riding as a passenger in a chopper or a boat. This weapon is most likely to kill an unarmored NPC by one shot.

Advanced MG

user posted image

The Advanced Machine gun that is based on the M249 is a very fast assault rifle that shoots about 700 bullets per minute and can be used to take down enemies fast. It has a 200 round capacity and a high rate of fire but it have a less stopping power than the Assault Rifle and the Carbine rifle and it has a less accuracy because it is fired from the hip rather than from the shoulder. But however, when it comes to taking down a large group of enemies the Advanced MG is the best. (in my opinion smile.gif )

Heavy Weapons

Heavy weapons are the most powerful weapons in the game. Like it says in their name they are heavy and the player’s movement is hindered but they do a lot of damage on a target(s). In GTA IV and it’s DLCs there are only 2 heavy weapons i.e. the RPG and the Grenade Launcher.

RPG

user posted image

The RPG which made its appearance in all GTA games is back in GTA IV and it’ DLCs and it resembles a Russian RPG-7. Unlike in the GTA III era the player shoots the RPG from a over-the-shoulder perspective and doesn’t switch to an immobile first-person mode like in the III era. This weapon can also be shot while in cover and can also be blind-fired. This is the most powerful weapon in the game because of it’s ability to take over any vehicle and even the deadly Annihilator with one rocket. Unlike in the III era the player doesn’t need to aim directly at a helicopter to crash it down, but if the player aims near the helicopter the force of it can make the pilot to crash it. When shooting the RPG requires a impact of a 45 Degree angle, anything less with cause the rocket to bounce then spiral out of control. (This doesn't happen in Multiplayer.) But however, the misuse of a RPG can cause the death of the player and it must be used sparingly because of its expensive price.

Alderney City, Alderney - Can be found on the roof of the Kakagawa Building near AutoEroticar. There is no roof access from the street, so a helicopter is needed.

Acter Industrial Park, Alderney - On a corner of a platform of the sunken cargo ship situated the far west of the district.

Grenade Launcher

user posted image

The Grenade Launcher which is based on a HK69A1 grenade launcher is featured only in the DLCs The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony and is never seen in GTA IV. This weapon can be used to launch 40mm grenades to quite a distance that cannot be done by the player and the launched grenades blasts off with in 7 or 6 seconds. However, in The Ballad of Gay Tony the grenades explode on impact (only people and vehicles) while in The Lost and Damned the grenades bounces off the target.

Great guide, but I've got a couple nitpicks:

• The pipe bombs can't be bought from Armando, and aren't a reward for the drug wars.

• You have baseball bat's $5 price listed under (contact), but that's its price in the store.

• You didn't mention that the shooting perspective can be changed by pressing the camera button; you can switch to the third-person shooting mode that way.
