El Dildo
title pretty much says it all. I really enjoy games like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Spec Ops: The Line. these are 3rd-person shooters that focus on squad-based combat; intelligent AI who don't just run-n-gun, issuing commands to your team, moving from cover to cover as you advance through a hostile area, prioritizing your targets based on threat level, realistic weapons and locations (not science fiction). I need more stuff like this. so can anyone recommend some other titles with similar gameplay? preferably newer games within the last 5-6 years. so don't tell me about Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. even though that's exactly what I'm looking for, it's just too old. and for the record, I've already played Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3. since those are also squad-based third-person shooters. I don't necessarily dislike the science fiction aspect, but I enjoy realistic / modern themes the most. thanks to whoever can help. it's hard to just search for games without knowing what exactly you want. there needs to be a database of PC games that you can search/filter by genre or gameplay style. would make this a lot easier. Dnero
How about that new XCOM? Not really a realistic modern shooter, it's more of a strategy game but it has that issuing squads and stuff throughout missions, and it's kind of third person I guess? Yeah, I also like the those game especially GRFS. Why don't you try Socom 4 or Gears of war series.. Note gears of war it's kind of science fiction but it's a great 3rd person squad-based combat game. You can also try the outfit for xbox360 a squad-based 3rd person action world war 2 game. Daz
so don't tell me about Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. even though that's exactly what I'm looking for, it's just too old. No, no, no, no, IT IS NOT TOO OLD Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 or 2 holds up just fine and is just about the best SP and CO-OP shooter you will ever find on this generation of consoles, if you think differently you are wrong. Terrorist Hunt + a friend = so much fun that I still play it all the time and have done for 6+ years since it came out. I disliked GR:FS, the MP seemed decent, but I couldnt stand the look of everything and the awful HUD in SP. Spec Ops: The Line was good but mostly due to the engine (it plays almost as good as R6: Vegas) quite satisfying shooting mechanics and hit detection. Though I found the layout of the game somewhat of a typical shooter, too many sections with just an entire army shooting at you, not enough sneakyness. But still made for a good game to play, but because it didnt have any co-op made it fail on it's arse, if it had a terrorist hunt like vegas does, I may even still play it. Other than Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 I cannot really recommend anything better. Tomb Raider recently was pretty awesome, good Third person shooting, alot more of a proper game than most sh*te that comes out. Sniper Elite V2 was pretty fun, not a super high budget game but it played like those oldschool games that were just about the gameplay and not story driven. But both of those you are on your own and not a squad, other than that the the only other game that is the best third person squad shooter is either SOCOM 1 + 2 on PS2 or the Conflict Desert Storm games but both probably too old for you now. El Dildo
calm down Daz. I didn't say Rainbow Six was a bad game. it's just too old for me to want to play again. I've already played through the original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear. I'm looking for something newer. I'll try Rainbow Six Vegas again, but when it was first released I remember reading mixed reviews that turned me off of it. but I'll try it again. never heard of Terrorist Hunt either, so I'll look into that as well thanks. not interested in Tomb Raider and I've already played Sniper Elite. plus those are not squad-based. I'm also going to check out SOCOM and XCOM. maybe Gears of War. I know that the gameplay in GoW is similar to what I want but I also know that's all about aliens or something. so we'll see how that goes. thanks for the feedback guys. also no one needs to suggest ArmA or Operation Flashpoint since I've already played those too. forgot to mention. any more recommendations are certainly welcome. Creed Bratton
Don't discount games based on how old they are. Personally I think that almost every game from PS2 era looks good enough. Especially from 2004 and beyond. XCOM is a turn-based strategy game. So keep that in mind. Like Daz said, Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 are incredible. It's a very rewarding experience with lots of replay value. The unlock system in Vegas 2 is one of the best I've seen in video games. It's very addictive. And if you're playing on PC you can make the graphics look better by enabling some features via ini files. Like dynamic lightning, anisotropic filtering, post processing, shadow resolution etc. I don't know why those features aren't already in the options menu. Also you can use ENB and FXAA injector to make the game look like most modern games. You can also check out Conflict games. Personally, I really enjoyed Conflict: Vietnam. I've played the original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear so many times I could sleepwalk through those missions. just looking for something newer in general. not discriminating against old. thanks for the Conflict suggestion too. Fireman
If you're going to check out XCom, I personally think Silent Storm was a much better turn-based squad game. It's not really modern times though, it's about WW II. I think you won't like turn-based that much though, sometimes it'll take very long before you can pewpew. And does it have to have guns? If not, try Mount and Blade: Warband. I've played through Rainbox Six: vegas, as well, quite fun, though I couldn't figure out how to make the NPC's jump through a window while on a rope, so I kept going in alone and dieing. It really is a great game. The enemies are, for all intents and purposes, human--the only exceptions are the infrequent bosses like corpsers. You won't find many better co-op TPS games. I've already played that too great game though, you're right. you can issue commands in the field and it's like one big gladiator battle on horseback. very cool. I play Warband using the Floris Mod pack: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php?board=197.0 makes the game twice as good as Vanilla. adds tons of new weapons and armors and horses, etc. screenshots here: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,148155.0.html I'm also going to check out Brothers in Arms and SWAT 4. thanks guys. keep the suggestions coming if you think of them. much appreciated

If you don't mind WWII, give Silent Storm a try, I thought it was fantastic, I even finished it! It's like $5,- on GOG. But like I said, be warned because it is turn-based and sometimes you'll be waiting for 3 minutes because of civilians moving. I'll upload some footage later. Claude4Catalina
I think a third person shooter with Max Payne 3 mechanics would work quite well as a compromise between the realism people crave and the Michael Bay effects others long for. Have a kit screen, customization and such but include Max's flexibility; however if the players character uses heavier armour (keep COD-like perks that could have an effect on the player model) they would be less flexible but still take ample cover, but if the player goes for lighter set up, a la Sergeant Elias, they could move and mantle quicker. I honestly think they could be a great medium found between giving the gun nerds and military fanatics like myself a game that they could realistically think to themselves "right, if I choose to load up on body armour, I wont be able to outrun an ATV but I can at least take more of a pounding" and keep the Call of Duty run and gunners happy, all whilst doing it from a different perspective. I'd love a third person shooter in the boonies or sand pit, but part of me thinks it'd end up bordering on military simulator.

Guest
Have you played Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2? Yes, it's the one before Future Soldier. It's from 2007 or so. The graphics are playable don't worry. I've not played FS so I can't compare but I liked playing through GRAW2. I think the console version is different to the PC version (PC FPS, Console TPS)

I mean, I own a PS3 but most of my gaming is done on PC.
