A Theory on Michael

Looking into the protagonists of GTA V, I saw an interview with Dan Houser where he describes Michael. At one point, he mentions they had thought of making Michael the hero from GTA III (Claude Speed), but had decided against it. I thought, however this may be a hint. This, as I said, just a theory, and I know it is completely wrong.

 

The only character I could see other than Claude that could return from GTA III would be Toni Cipriani. Toni was voiced by Michael Madsen in GTA III (This will be important later). In Liberty City Stories, Toni was probably mid 20's, and he was slightly modeled after Michael Madsen. In GTA III, he would be 30ish. So in GTA V, he would be 40ish, the age of Michael. In my opinion, Michael in GTA V bears close resemblance to Michael Madsen. That's my theory, that it may be based on Toni Cipriani.

Thank you, someone who isn't bashing me haha. Dan Houser stated that the character was originally based on Claude, so I figure GTA V may have SOME reference to the 3rd and 4th era.

I see they updated the wiki for Michael. Lots of interesting things to read! I still especially like this:

 

 

Michael is known to have a good and bad side. His good side is that he is thoughtful and calculated and likely to keep his motives hidden. But, his bad side are his flaws, and his flaws are certainly his large ego, an inability to control his temper, and his willingness to make large moral compromises. He wants to compartmentalize and be a good guy some of the time. As stated above he has a horrible family that he wants to leave but can't for specific reasons and has access to all the pleasures in the world but is bored. Dan Houser has also stated that despite seeming to be the good guy (at least compared to Trevor), he might end up being worse than Trevor in the end.

 

Michael is the most interesting GTA protagonist in the entire series to me. I can't wait to find out what becomes of him during the events of V.

Agreed. I'm most curious to see how his family is going to work into the story. Michael is the first protagonist ever to be a family man. So it's def. going to be interesting. Here's something else I like from his wiki:

 

 

"He's the person who is trying to ignore some rather large mistakes that they have made. The person who's trying to forget about certain practical but still selfish decisions that they took. He's a man, also, obsessed by images and by appearances and who, when the world doesn't live up to those images and appearances, doesn't know what to do. He just retreats into his head."

 

His character has a lot of layers... and I really like that. Makes the story all the more interesting.

The interesting thing about multiple characters is they don't all have to be flawless. For some reason, videogames need super-likeable leading characters to be enjoyable, when this is not really the case in many other forms of storytelling. In fact, most of Shakespeare's leading characters were terrible people like Macbeth. The best TV show characters are your Walter White's, Tony Soprano's and Al Swearangen's; generally despicable men that are brilliant to watch. Videogames are decades behind in storytelling because of this simple point.

Actually, I like that Michael is flawed. He seems more human in that sense... like the events in his life has led to his flaws. As you said about Walter and Tony, I think Michael is alot like them. They are all pretty much around the same age... all family men... all have these big egos, and are very calculating. They have flaws, but their flaws deliver us a great story. Michael is described by Dan Houser as a man who has alot, and nothing to lose. Alot AND nothing to lose? That sounds pretty f*cking awesome story-wise.

 

But yeah, it's good we have multiple protags so we can balance things out.

Yep! And I strongly believe that since we now will have 3 different view points of the story, one of the protagonists will most likely become an antagonist... either indirectly or directly. It happened in IV with Niko, Johnny, and Luis...
