I don't think V is or could be partly based on anything, its a story line set in modern day LA
Travís.
I reckon it's based on.................... Nothing.
DubstepDerp
Sam had said that he didn't watch that many movies or reality shows because he didn't want inspiration from them so the writing and story is completely original.
Sneum
'Heat' from 1995. I gotta admit, from what we know about the game so far, 'Heat' could very well be one of the sources of inspiration. Watch the movie and see for yourself... But I wouldn't go as far as to say that GTAV is directly based on any particular movie or tv show. r0eladn
Max Payne was based on Max Payne. Hitman was based on Hitman. GTA is based on nothing.

Mister Pink
Sick of hearing about Heat. It's a decent film but and they've sort of referenced it in IV. A few films I'd like to see some influence from would be.. Jvmes
"Inspired by" would be better than "based on" As for saying that Sam stated he doesn't watch movies or television shows - get real! He actually said he avoids watching current television shows like Breaking Bad. That doesn't mean other people on the team have not seen them. It doesn't mean he isn't aware of them. It certainly doesn't mean he won't have picked up kernels of inspiration from a variety of sources along the way. 'Heat' is the obvious inspiration. It's an iconic movie in a modern-day LA. Michael shares more than a few things in common with Neil McCauley (De Niro). Michael Mann's 'Collateral' should come in to play at times. As should 'Training Day', being another relevant LA thriller. In terms of inspiring the heists they should have seen The Dark Knight, The Town, Inside Man. Frankly, original story-telling in videogames is a totally different proposition than originality in movies. It would be foolish in the extreme for the writers to deliberately ignore relevant material. And I don't believe for a second that they did. I think that interview referred to the fact that Vice City and San Andreas where based directly (although very loosely) around specific films - that won't be the case at all for V but it will draw inspiration from them. ScottishHeist123
I dont think GTA V will be based on any movie - Rockstar will want to have an original story. Arguably you could say it's very similar to 'The Good The Bag & The Ugly'. GTAV is about three men working together for financial gain, much like the movie. GR7
The main one is obviously Heat like someone said earlier. Similar to how Vice City was loosely based on Scarface. The first similarities we noticed were the main character who would basically be Michael if he decided to just retire (he looks like him dresses like him they even have the same hairstyle) and the other similarity was the L.A setting. Those two things led us to believe that Michael would be involved in heists and have a small crew that would be with him for the entire game way before the GI article. Since we got that prediction right by looking at the movie Heat for reference, it's safe to say it will have the biggest influence out of all the films/tv shows GTA V could be based on. Mister Pink
I think what we learned from IV is that GTA is more fun when it's based on films. Everyone said their favourite mission is Three Leaf Clover, Rockstar acknowledged that. I loved VC at the time as I was watching Scarface for the first time. I loved all the references. San Andreas for all the hood movies and more etc. RUBBΣR░J♢HNNY (スオッ)

killahmatic
I don't think its based on anything. LA is a popular city, and heists are a popular theme.
