YankeesPwnMets
I recently applied some new paste to my H60 and i5 3570K using the line method. I put the computer back together and booted it up, where I saw that I had 160F on idle, which was insane. I played around with the UEFI BIOS before eventually just giving up. I took apart the machine again and this time did a more thorough cleaning and used a small pea sized drop of thermal paste. Booted back up once again, same temps once again. This is a 60-70 F rise in temp from the stock Corsair paste I used to have.. why is this happening? I've reapplied thermal paste many times on other machines and never saw something as dramatic as this... under Prime95 I get 210 F. Someone have advice? I'm using a Coolermaster thermal paste
Stinky12
First, how did you clean it? Try another thermal paste, other than Cooler Master. Maybe the copper plate isn't touching the CPU?
YankeesPwnMets
I cleaned it with 91% rubbing alcohol, let the alcohol dry and then used a dry piece of toilet paper to rub off the excess. I've done this procedure multiple times without incident..... As for the copper contact, I screwed it in as far as it would go.. I'm pretty sure contact isn't the issue. The radiator started to rattle excessively until I rebooted, so now I just took out the H60 and put the stock cooler on there, which is at 85F on idle at stock speeds. I sent an email to Corsair and I hope that I will get a response by Monday evening
AZAZEL
Doubt the issues you're having are related to the thermal paste. Seems more likely that something went awry with the H60 during the procedure. Something like the fans not being plugged in would explain it, but I'm sure you've checked that.
YankeesPwnMets
I noticed the increasing temps at idle BEFORE the thermal paste change (150F), which lead me to replace the paste. Replacing the paste did not help and temps kept on going up, with the pump eventually making a rattling noise which prompted Corsair to ask me to send it back to them. Me being in New York, shipping to their RMA warehouse in Hayward, California will cost me about $20 (both shipping supplies and postage included) through FedEx Ground. I went to the UPS Store for a quote as well, which was $20 postage only.. meaning I would need to pay more for packaging. I could have gone Priority Mail but my damn post office doesn't even have packing peanuts and there is no way in hell I'm shipping that thing by itself across the country with nothing to cushion it. Anyways, when Corsair gives me more information about faults that they find I'll update you guys
WHAT!?
Hopefully Corsair will have a diagnosis for you then. The only thing that came to my mind was either contact, or you applied too much paste causing it to insulate the heat of the processor. From the sound of things this isn't your first rodeo. Hope you get it resolved.

Tell Corsair you want them to cover shipping. The several times I've had to RMA stuff to Corsair, I've asked them if they can cover shipping and every time it hasn't been an issue. I presume it's probably one of those things they will do if you ask, but just won't publicly announce it to save money.
friendly luggage
Is there any other way of checking the CPU temps as the sensor could be wrong? Have you checked the cooler is mounted properly?
OverTheBelow
Might be a stupid question but did you forget to plug in the pump? I've seen several cases where people have forgotten to do this and then suffered high temps. Otherwise, it could be a faulty pump.
YankeesPwnMets
Power connectors were the first thing that I checked. Anyways, I used the BIOS Sensor as well, which also read 100. When I took off the CPU Cooler and felt the physical processor myself it absolutely piping hot. I would get BSODs and throttle warnings as well, which just about confirms that the sensors are fine. Anyways, I replaced the H60 with the stock cooler and the sensors are reading normal temperatures... I don't think the sensor is the issue @Ryan: I asked Corsair to send me a prepaid label.. hopefully they'll reply soon
YankeesPwnMets
Ok just a little update for you guys: Corsair diagnosed the problem as a dead pump. They just shipped out a replacement to me via UPS Ground. The one good thing that did come out of this was that I'm going to be receiving the second gen model with a new pump and fan instead of the original first generation model that I bought back in August
Ryan
Should have asked them for an upgrade. Any time you have to RMA something, Corsair will upgrade if you ask. That's how I got my H100

Ryan
I'm not encouraging anything, but if you were to find a problem with it... bent rad fins or something...
