Really guys? What does it matter if it's old? That doesn't mean anything. It doesn't mean it won't ever happen.

I have no doubt that R* could make a map that include ALL previous U.S. based locations into one huge area. With the specs of the PS4, not to mention it's currently the year 2013, by the time GTA VI rolls around, it'll be around 2018 (give or take a year) and the technology by the time will have jumped leaps and bounds over what it is now. So, I'm convinced R* will try to do this with VI. The only real problem I see is them trying to fill all that map with enough storyline to keep us playing. A 25-40 hour main storyline for a map that size would be like buying an egg crate capable of holding 100 eggs, opening it up and only finding 3 eggs. So, when the map gets the big, the storyline will also have to increase too. I'm talking like 150+ hours of SOLID playtime (main story only). Then they could add hours upon hours of side quest stuff.

And if they could make it look like the epic map posted above (as huge and detailed) I'd be in hog [email protected]#king heaven.

I think the game would be crap and they would need to stick to one region, connecting cities would be stupid.

Why?

If they connect cities they need to be close, you cant connect vice city to los santos or las venturas to liberty city, it would kill the vibe and feel of the game, sure it would be a bit of fun as a mod but not a game maybe Liberty city and boston or vice city connected could work. rockstar know what they are doing so let them work there magic thats why they chose 1 main city and a few towns for V because it will work well, the news report smells fishy anyway.

150+ hours of gameplay would be difficult to script out alongside the development of the hug ass map, not to mention it could get pretty boring and monotonous in the middle.

I thinking Rockstar could release this mega map, along with the standard 25-30 hour gameplay, but instead of bringing us to new and reimagined locations in future games, they could IMPROVE on a section of the map with every new title, plus new gameplay modes and storyline, and as they progress, new car lines, adverts, everything changes, not too much but rather more subtler , so it still feels fresh and like Rockstar's USA has changed over the years between the titles.

I'd prefer if the next game was set in 'the south' it would feature all new areas. Texas could definitely be included. That's a whole area of America that hasn't been explored yet in GTA. And then of course there's the Northwest.. Seattle maybe? I don't know. I'd just like to see somewhere new... That's not to say i don't think it would be awesome to have a next gen Venturas, or San Fierro, or Vice City. I'd still like to see them, but i wonder how long Rockstar will want to keep on doing the same locations. Even though i appreciate that they aren't really the same, but the essence of the places is still the same, there are a lot of well known cities in America, they would all make great GTA games as long as they do them right.

BullworthAcademy.

This could be a possibility in next gen consoles. The first GTA did it then why can't we do it again? consoles this generation have limitations, keeping developers from making their dream games but in time they can come up with something dream like that everyone has been waiting for.

It was easier for DMA design to release 3 separate cities in the past in one game due to how different technology and simple it was in the old days, now everything is a lot more complex, game worlds require a lot of attention in detail which takes a lot more time.

I kind of thought about that at one point. Some GTA set in the deep south, with a large city but also a lot of rural area, with a kind of Justified cowboy sort of feel, maybe it could be one of the 'period' games as well. There's nothing that necessarily says that GTA has to take place in a big city, I think a more sprawled out map of several smaller cities (that represent real places which of course wouldn't be anywhere near the size of LA or New York, so it makes sense) could work as well. Something different, indeed. It's not my favorite idea of a future GTA setting, but it could be an interesting change of pace.

Unless they're gunna do "GTA: Country" there is no need to put all those locations on one landmass. The map could be a HUGE area filled with like 3 gigantic islands that are way the hell apart from each other in the game and depending on the method of travel, could take a significant amount of time to reach.

One island could have Liberty City and a Boston area. The second could have an expanded Vice City w/ Key West type islands. The third (and biggest) could have Los Santos, Las Venturas, and San Fiero, as well as some significant surrounding countryside around and in between.

That would make it more realistic.

As far as how they could fill it with story, perhaps the main story could take place over a period of like 2-3 years. We start in one City, complete like 80 missions, then move to another where we do another 80 missions, then finally we move to the final island where we complete the final 80-120 missions. So it's as if each of the three main "islands" have their own unique and self-contained storyline with a beginning, middle, and end that we have to complete before moving to the next island, and each island could be part of an overall trilogy. The stories will be unique and enclosed to themselves, but in the grand scheme, will over-arc with each other to create an overall trilogy taking place over several months or years.

By 2018, I see no reason at all why something like this couldn't happen. None.

Exactly. The south has a very distinct feel to it which is quite different from most other places. They can't really 'parody' american culture and yet never visit such a huge part of that culture. It could definitely work.

Yes but which generation of maps, probably the new ones (Redesigned) but think about all previous maps that we wont ever see again. So really they are making one map of a new place

Well, I'm pretty sure that in the GTA universe there is still a middle part of the continent, containing areas like, well, the entire rest of the US. Having nothing but ocean there would be pretty odd, so you'd probably have to add some new locations to fill this area.

And 2018, well... to be honest, that's probably when the next GTA game will come out, if not later. I personally don't think they'll be doing that for the very next GTA game. But I also think that they'll be keeping to specific regions for more creative reasons than logistical, although the logistics would probably be a big factor. Next gen games might able to handle such a large map, but creating said map is an entirely different story.

EDIT:

Instead of having east coast and west coast connected with a cut scene, just make the whole of North America, imagine how massive a game that would be. Can't see it being able to run on next gen but we are talking Ps5 here, maybe in 2021-2025.

Again, though... even if that gen can handle such a large map (and hey, let's not underestimate it. If we're working with something pretty scaled down, it may very well be able to), making such a large map would be a complete nightmare, and the game would be in development hell for who knows how long. Assuming all the cities are being made with the same sort of scale (or even larger) as we've seen in the current gen, you're having to do that over again at least five times, and maybe even 10 times if you're including a bunch of new cities to fill the space in between the coasts, along with a bunch of small towns... a map like that just isn't going to get made. Unless they eschew quality for the sake of quantity, such as repeating a huge amount of assets including buildings and having a bunch of cookie-cutter towns.

That's one reason why I don't think this is ever going to happen. The only maps that get this big involve a large amount of copy and paste, otherwise they take too long and require too much work. There has to be a balance between quality and quantity, and a map of an entire scaled down United States would probably be way in the other direction.
