MattyIce
While playing the "Lost and the Damned" expansion pack last night.. for the first time in quite some time.. I came to the realization that I always seemed to yearn for something more in Liberty City. The skyscrapers were awe-inspiring, the architecture was beautiful, the lights of Star Junctune at night put a glimmer in my eye... But I felt incomplete. After about an hour of rampage; killing of the innocent and guilty, alike, it dawned on me.. I was driving around, and walking up and down the (beautiful) streets of building, after building, after building, turn the corner, building, and yet another building.. Everything seemed the same.. Sure there were recognizable landmarks that made me feel special to be in the presence of, such as The Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty and Central Park, but I still longed for something more.. It was then, that I had the sense of Lukewarm Nostalgia run through the course of my veins.. I remember the days of heading west from Grove St, over a short bridge, and into a (seemingly) completely new world, to the top of Mt. Chiliad.. I just remember the excitement (in my pants) I felt as I drove from one section of the map, to a completely new and DIFFERENT (looking and feeling) section of the map. The Point of this thread is: I miss the real sense of exploration San Andreas had that Liberty City so desperately lacked. And I cannot wait to Explore the map and different sections of the reimagined San Andreas in GTA V. I think we're in for a real nostalgic treat, ladies and gentlemen. Add your moments of exploration nostalgia, if you'd like.
Forkie
yeah, it's gonna be nice to have more than "just" a city to explore. Some nice country-side and stuff
Supernutz40
Nostalgia moment: After about 30 mins of playing SA I found the airport and its stupid fence. I immediately proceeded to drive around and find a large enough truck to climb onto and get over that stupid fence. Enter the nostalgia moment: I told my friend at work the next day that I got a plane already and he was like how?!?! You gotta tell me! So I told him where on the map to go and whatnot. Later that night back at home I received 2 calls from co-workers asking me how to do it and then a call from my boss, asking me the same damn thing. saintsrow
I liked the lonely mood of desert sunset in GTA-SA, as the sky turned purple / orange / red sunset colors, and the day was over, just driving around and chilling to the vibe of it all, forgetting that there was a city to go back to. With the beautiful contemplative desert sunsets and sunrises in RDR as further inspiration, I am so looking forward to the strange, lonely, special desert moods again, but better and with modern buildings, roads and music, in GTAV. Also, as the OP mentions, traveling from desert to redwoods to mountains -- the transitions are magic.

Everyone here seems to link exploration fondly with SA. I'm surely no different. SA was an absolute and timeless classic of its time and I will continue praising it for as long as I can. 8 years and counting. One of the strongest nostalgias ever. Kifflom112
Liberty City was an awe-inspiring city with lots of diversity and beautiful architecture, yada-yada-yada like you said. But I personally enjoyed exploring it. I'm a city type of guy, one who enjoys many different types of architecture, the bustle, et cetera. Unlike many exploring Liberty City did not feel like building after building. I paid some attention to many of the buildings I was passing and was just surprised by the detail, the diversity(the fact that not many buildings repeat themselves, there was a large selection of buildings in IV). I loved discovering alleyways because sometimes there was something to uncover like this lovely patio behind some Italian restaurant. It was awesome. I feel that IV would feel much more complete and just better if it did have countryside though... I'm so glad that with V we will now be able to explore a city as good as Liberty City, and then escape the hustle and bustle to a peaceful countryside to explore. Nostalgia: I remember picking up this Sentinel in San Andreas and painting it green. Then I went on a huge road trip around the map. It was awesome transitioning from desert to the woods to the mountainous terrains. The feeling of freedom and the fact that I could enter and leave cities. GoldenBlade
Yes, the variety of land to explore on GTA V will be amazing. I love exploring LC on GTA IV, but it'd be nice to have a little piece of the countryside, too.

This got me thinking.. betting on dog fights? Not saying i want it but it could make sense, if animals are attacking each other. I dont support dog fighting for anyone that wants to hate on me. TheD94
Oh man, I remember the first day I got GTA San Andreas. I didn't do the missions... I entered AEZAKMI + JUMPJET and explored the whole map. Man that was so awesome to explore the whole map, knowing out secrets and so on. The countryside was the most awesome thing because it was kinda new to me. Already this made GTASA to the best GTA so far. I searched UFO's in the night of the desert (I thought there were UFO's ingame - I was a noob there) or when I found the Dozer in whetstone. I first thought, "where the f*ck am I now...? Wow, awesome mountain!" Lol. I also remember when I hunted for bigfoot. Good times... good times. Now the game is boring to me and nothing special... sadly. I already know almost every corner of GTASA. Sometimes I wish I could forget the whole game and explore it again. I just wish that GTAV's countryside is as awesome as the countryside in GTASA.
killahmatic
GTA would be nothing without a large city, but I agree that exploring the countryside makes the game a lot better.

jamieleng
My nostalgic moment from San Andreas, was the discovery of the parachute on top of Mt. Chiliad. It wasn't mentioned in any previews I'd read & at first I thought it was a backpack, to carry more stuff. I honestly can't remember my first jump, but that moment is seared in my brain. The discoveries in this game are going to be overwhelming. It's not like SRIV's 'everything & the kitchen sink' it's GTA's 'everything & the kitchen sink'. That means every element will be refined & actually feel like it belongs to the same game. That's the difference, it's a cohesive & engaging experience. MattyIce
I will always remember certain parts of SA but IV it is not that memorable, just dark, sluggish weather and boring gameplay I agree with most of this. Although I don't believe the gameplay was boring. It was still fun as hell to run over pedestrians at full speed, and have shoot outs with those (genius) police. What was boring, was pretty much everything else lol. i.e- side activities (bowling, darts, pool, etc.) good grief were they lame. Once you finish the story, all you really have fun to do, is KILL. >
nic_23
I will always remember certain parts of SA but IV it is not that memorable, just dark, sluggish weather and boring gameplay the story line to IV and TLaD was definitely a little dark/depressing but i think the story line to TBoGT defiantly brightened things up, as for the gameplay i thought it was brilliant in all 3 and good fun, i just think we are a little bored of it now and are looking forward to sunny LA
1987_EC
yes i agree op there was something missing from gta iv which is the countryside, desert and forest areas to explore..and i cannot wait also to explore these areas using a bicycle that would be lots of fun
Mister Pink
Hugely disappointed we didn't have that variety for IV. For me, the standard open-world game like GTA MUST have variety of environments. I think it's absolutely compulsive that we have variety in environments. The transition from one land mass to another means that your time is split between two different environments essentially killing any factor of getting bored of the map so soon and extending the replay ability of the game. IV only had city and of course water so I knew straight away, I wouldn't play it as long as a game with varied environments.
