WildBrick142
I think your biggest mistake is comparing it to GTA. It's like all the people who thought the Ouya was mean to compete with the Xbox and PS3. Even if SR isn't setting its sights on GTA, it can still be compared to it. And you know what? I really like the whole thing SR is trying! The idea of a GTA-like sandbox game, except with utterly insane superpower, larger-than-life enemies, and tons of absolute craziness? Sign me up! But the problem is that SR does it in such a low-brow, amateurish way, that's so immature and obsessed with being CUH-RAYZEE that it forgets to be a good game in the end. I like absolutely nucking futs games. It's why I love Japanese games so much. But you've got to have a good game holding the wackiness together, there's got to be a solid design and focus. SR's like a Michael Bay movie--yes, there's explosions and crazy stuff happening all the time, but there's no substance underneath, so the whole movie just feel pointless. That's what SRIII and IV feel like to me. There's just endless amounts of wackiness thrown at you without any thought for how it fits together. It just feels so...inane. "Yay, you're the president and have superpowers and you can dress up as a giant hot-dog and give yourself a huge dong and there's a dubstep gun and you're fighting aliens!" It's just chaotic, without any real focus on something. I admit I got a little too insult-y and flaming before. I hope this explains my views on this game, and why I'm not a fan of the creative decisions behind it, better. You really need to play the game. Everything you're bashing it for isn't really there, and you,re proving that you're blindly hating a game simply because of the monicker it sports. Its a little ridiculous that the boss would become President, but with a little suspension of belief, its fine. The superpower thing? Part of the simulation, the boss doesn't really have super powers. Lowbrow humor? I haven't seen too much of it in this game, but I'm not really looking for it, the point is.. You can avoid it if you want to, you are not forced into it at all. So far, everything in this game has been really f*cking great. If you, and people like you, are going to continuously bash the game or hate it without giving it a chance.. I feel sorry for you, you're missing out on a truly great gaming experience Actually, during the last mission, The Protagonist gets super powers in real life after putting on a special suit. Sirens
Never really liked SR, tried SR2 and gave up after about half an hour and sold the game, but SR4 actually seems kind of enjoyable, watched a game play commentary of the first mission last night, and was actually quite surprised I'll wait till it drops in price though.... I'm not making that mistake again after SR2
ll rdny ll
Okay, after 15 hours of gameplay, I can still say, I f*cking love this game. If you're thinking about getting it, just do it. This is one of the funnest games I've played in a while. Haven't beaten it yet, so can't comment on the overall story, but I liked how Johnny's story was 'explained' Also, I'm loving all the references/homages to popular video games. bobgtafan
I just finished the game and here are my thoughts. The game is better than Saints Row 3, much better in fact. But the game is still a pile of rotting horse sh*t compared to what Saints Row 1 and 2 were and I am still saddened the series has gone in this direction. In any case the ending lends itself to an even more insane sequel and I can honestly say that I will be renting Saints Row 5. In truth there is not much to the story campaign and you are not forced to play the mini games outside of the first time like in Saints Row 3 (which is good because I hated the mini games) but if you want the good power ups and upgrades to your characters super powers then you have to. I have never been one to rate games off of a 10 scale. Instead I would say rent it. You can get through the campaign in 9 hours easily if not less. I spent some time f*cking around in the city. To be honest the game seems like the game Saints Row 3 should of been and at the same time that's not a good thing. There is not a lot of new customization at all, and also with the ability to run and jump across the city in a few steps the end to even use cars is basically gone. Also Steelport is a boring city to transverse and looks like a sh*tty version of Gotham. Uhh what else needs to be said? There are some good laughs and moments. Most of the humor comes from pointing out events in old games, there is a lot of recycled content...I mean a lot of recycled content. Hell the game feels like it is one step above DLC almost...regardless the superpowers you get make it play like a better version of Crackdown and it is worth a run through...although not good enough to buy. Tycek
After watching Angry Joe's review, who is always cracking me up I may get this game somewhere in the future, but not for more than a tenner. I like they actually dropped their childish humor in favor of intelligent references, but too much recycling and problems with difficulty levels (too easy and tedious due to superpowers) are lowering the final note for me. Moth
So having just beat the game, and did all of the mini games(The only thing left are those damn challenges). I have come to a conclusion. I can safely say, it rivals my love of Saints Row 2. Both games have hardly anything in common with it each other, besides the obvious. But this game was so much f*cking fun. Sure it has it's problems, so did SR2, but the game outshines those problems. I am someone who was extremely disappointed with SR3. SR3 really felt a step backwards from SR2. And the one thing they really tried to be, funny, they really failed at it. It was nonstop sex jokes and other things 13 years old would find funny. SR4 on the other hand, is pretty damn funny. Well, for those that get the references. I do, so it works for me. And there are a ton of reference, be it Star Wars or Star Trek, to past games in the series. You can pretty much compare it to Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon in style. Sure it's not a parody of 80s and 90s action movies like Blood Dragon is, but it still throws in a lot of references from those periods of time. And the game play is quite varied when it comes to the actual story missions. From text adventures to a Side scroller brawler. Plus the super powers are awesome. Running faster than pretty much everything on the road, to leaping buildings in a single bound, then freezing or shrinking your enemies. The only downside with the powers, is that they pretty much make cars useless. Helicopters are still somewhat useful, to get to higher places when you can't reach them by jumping. Guns start out pretty weak, but when you upgrade them, they can become pretty op. At least on normal. The game itself is pretty easy, I only died do to my stupid actions, and even then I only died 3 or 4 times. The upgrades really do make you feel powerful. The game also has a lot of collectables. Over a thousand infact, but they are pretty easy to find and they help your powers grow. I found somewhere between 700-800 of them by the time I finished the story and took over Steelport. They vary in type. The most common are the data clusters, you spend them to get upgrades for you powers. Then there are the text adventures, audio logs and the Zinyak Statues. Those do nothing but add more lore to the game.(Well except the Statues, those do f*ck all) Would I recommend it? It really depends on what kind of gamer you are. If you are like bobgtafan, then you are going to pretty much hate it. If you are someone like me, who gets the game, you are really going to enjoy it. Now is it worth the price of 60 dollars? For me it was, got around 20 hours of gameplay out of it, and really enjoyed it. I had a smile on my fast during a good amount of the game, that doesn't really happen much.(Last game that did it, was Blood Dragon) It is no way a DLC or expansion sized game(At least compared today's games), they really did put a good amount of effort into it, unlike SR3. Creed Bratton
While I still don't approve of what Volition had done with the series, I value your opinion. Dutch Psycho
The game is very funny and have nice controls. But technical it's a downgrade of 3. epicluca
Hate me for this, but I only started in the SR Series at Saints Row 3 and I f*cking loved it, I played through it twice and Amazon is dispatching my Saints Row 4 now, I have played Saints Row 2 and it's not as crazy as 3 but I guess I like slapstick for a change, after all these dramatic games (TLoU, Beyond, Batman: AO, AC 3, and more) it's nice to have an insane slapstick game. gwaha
It is quite sad to see how the rating system has been screwed with by so many gaming sites. No game deserves a 10. The gaming sites pretty much rate games the same way as individuals do on meta critic nowadays making it a completely useless tool for anything. Rewas
I've been watching some walkthroughs on YouTube and I must say it's better than SR3 and SR2. Moth
No game deserves a 10. It really depends on how they use the rating system. I would say most sites don't really think a 10 is a perfect game. It's a game that you must own, in their opinion. Reviews for the most part, are opinion based. People are going rate a game higher because they enjoyed it. And there is no real difference between some guy reviewing a game on youtube and IGN. It really comes down to the amount of people that follow each of them, and the production values that are put into the videos. That's it. There opinion is not more important than some smuck on youtube, they just have a bigger reach. Formerly known as The General
Secura
And there is no real difference between some guy reviewing a game on youtube and IGN. It really comes down to the amount of people that follow each of them, and the production values that are put into the videos. That's it. There opinion is not more important than some smuck on youtube, they just have a bigger reach. Well perhaps their opinions are no more significant but one is certainly seen as more important than the other, IGN's reviews get hundreds of thousands of views where as some budding YouTuber would be lucky to reach a number even a tenth of that size. Review scores don't matter really, what matters is if you enjoy the game and really you can only get that from either playing or doing a lot of research on the game prior to purchasing it. Though quite obviously more people are going to value what IGN says simply because their opinions reach a much larger audience, and because of that you're going to have a lot of issues. The people that really love and support the game that IGN reviews are either going to love them for what they've said about their favourite game and defend IGN's right to say whatever they want about the game to the death, or they're going to get very pissed and mad that an IGN reviewer didn't like the game that they did. This works the same way for people that hate specific franchises, most notably Call of Duty, Battlefield and anything else along those lines. So IGN's opinions are "more important" but they aren't significant in the slightest and neither are the overall ratings that anyone but you decides to give the game that you're playing or planning on playing. Because at the end of the day it doesn't (and really shouldn't) matter to you what the IGN editor thinks of the game, because they're not the ones that are deliberating over whether or not spending money on it would be a valuable investment, you are. So if you like the game that's fantastic and if you don't, well then you don't. It's really as simple as that. I realise that's more than likely the point you were trying to get across but unfortunately for many of us there are those that will go out of their way to either defend or attack big gaming sites like IGN because of their popularity, as such their opinions are highly valued by more people making their opinions in general more "important" even though these people are trying to fabricate the illusion of importance in an area where there really is none. As for my personal views on the game? I've played a few hours of it and I must say that it bears many striking similarities to the Prototype series of games, and seeing as though this game has been so highly praised for its innovative new ways of exploring a open world sandbox, it's slightly saddening to think that all these reviewers never really paid much attention to the Prototype or even Crackdown series of games who were doing this stuff way before it was cool. Still that doesn't detract from the fact that the game's world is very fun to navigate and explore, the superpowers add a whole bunch of really cool ways to transverse the somewhat varied landscape of virtual Steelport. The combat is a lot funner then it was in older games, seeing as Saints Row 4 seems to have adopted Skyrim's approach to improving gameplay, and that would be adding a third element to your already varied arsenal of weaponry. The superpowers add a level of depth to fights that simply wasn't there in prior Saints Row games, this is a double-edged sword however seeing as the superpowers also make combat a lot easier. The only real difficulty in the game comes from your waning attention span, and when that starts to happen you often end up making mistakes that you wouldn't if the superpowers weren't there, yes it allows you more options in battle but it also detracts from the difficulty which in turn detracts from your overall enjoyment of the game's combat. A shame really considering how central fighting is to your adventures in the game. The series' sense of humour has made a return to form, I enjoyed Saints Row 3's immaturity and the way that me and friend could just f*ck around whacking each other with five foot long purple dildo bats but that enjoyment faded rather fast and as result the game's humour wore off the more time I put into it which was rather disappointing to say the very least. Here the game forgets its crude past and instead tries a more intelligent, witty and overall better approach to comedy, the references and and in-jokes are stacked sky high and that's just how I like them. The game's made me laugh on numerous occasions and not just because of the great writing but also because of the absurdity of what I'm viewing, the game's first mission introduces the player to a higher standard of comedy and it's a very welcome change to the Saints Row formula. Overall I'm really enjoying the game thus far and would definitely recommend it to anyone who's either a fan of the older Saints Row games, been on the fence about buying it for some time or just wants a really good superhero experience. Yes, you heard here Saints Row 4 is the best superhero game on the market, and I do realise how strange that sounds. Volition's done a great job with Saints Row 4 and I for one am very, very pleased by the Saints' Return, I'm also really looking forward to Saints Row V as I'm certain that the absurdity will only continue to rise and improve as the series develops. Moth
I'm also really looking forward to Saints Row V as I'm certain that the absurdity will only continue to rise and improve as the series develops. Seems they have stated that this is the last in game in the current arc or something along those lines. But with that ending, I really hope they make a 5th game that continues on. f*cking time travel man, that's the damn ending!
