Would you guys be cool with it or pissed if V had background music for some missions? Personally, it wouldn't matter to me.

Yes, I enjoyed it in that specific mission in Saints Row 3.. then again in Far Cry 3.

It does have background music in V.

I assume you will be able to turn it down if you don't want it, though that is unconfirmed.

music like in RDR or MP3? then yes, listen to "Tears" by Health and you know what i mean

Yes.

As it's something new in the series, many people are afraid of it, I think. But I trust in Rockstar that they will not fail at it.

I might not mind background music and it might even add to the game, but since I play the broken record here about wanting GTAV to be a video game rather than a movie (like the movie that was Max Payne 3), I don't like the game design mindset that goes along with mission background music.

RDR's understated musical background cues kind of gave a sense of the underlying story mode. This was pretty much OK since RDR was a cinematically inspired piece of art. But it should end there.

I don't want GTAV to be a long cutscene movie with funky video effects (Max Payne 3 again) or many of the other trappings of movies, with a few little episodes of interactive gunplay and driving inbetween. It's an interactive game. It's THE MOST interactive game. Don't let the Housers make GTAV into a movie. If they spend too much time scripting the missions to match the background music, it will be a fail.

It's something new in the GTA series and it's also what I want to see. It really gives a thrill and a feel because form the start GTA V might have a deep underlying story on this game.

I've come across countless GTA missions and moments in each where a score would work brilliantly.

I am all for this and I would not mind at all. Background music with some dramatic missions would be awesome.

Honestly, I would prefer if they made it so that certain songs come up on radio stations during different missions.

Sort of like how the mission in GTA: VCS to get to the second island had "Holy Diver" play no matter what.

Proof?

I don't think he meant that he has already been chosen to be the GTA 6 background score composer, but rather that he is volunteering for the job.

Nonetheless, if he just Tweets it to the world, LotusRIP @SuperScores: "Working late nights on GTA6 background score. need more Red Bull #GTA6" people will believe it and talk about it on the forums for 2 or 3 years and since Rockstar won't confirm or deny, he can ride that train the whole way, and maybe get some other score composing offers. colgate.gif

Then maybe after doing some other high profile game scores because he got hired by producers thinking he really is the GTA 6 composer, maybe his resume will be hot enough that Rockstar will in fact hire him for the GTA 6 score.

You sound a little too negative here for my taste when referring to MP3. What's your problem with Max Payne 3? Let's talk it out. (and then get back on topic at some point again, after we talked about it)

R* did an OUTSTANDING job on Max Payne 3 bro. I personally think it's the best game R* made to this date. (Yeah I KNOW, I said it anyway) So, what is it you really don't like about it? The linearity? That there was a clear direction in the game and seemingly nothing was left up in the air for coincidence? That everything was executed perfectly in terms of story unfolding and gameplay? That it blurred the lines too much between movie AND game? That it was a f*ckin epxerience from start to finish without any dry spells? Was it too high octane for you? Was it the fact we got to see the most brilliant cutscenes ever in a game? Was it the perfect score which pulled you even deeper into the game than the mechanical cutscene/gameplay immersion already did? Was it too intense?

I'd really like to hear your thoughts mate

Meh. I really don't like the idea of background music in GTA, unless you're on foot, or in a vehicle that can't have music on. confused.gif

I want something similar to this for police chases:

I think it should only play in missions and only in free roam by user choice. When I've got the entire LSPD on my tail I'd want to listen to my own music.

Yeah I suppose they'll have it split between mission and free roam. During missions (at certain points in the game) you will not be able to listen to the radio, but that's a good thing cause that's where the SCORE may get rly interesting. When it creates tension in situations like getaways or heavy shootouts, or when it builds up the feeling of suspense like in a scene where someone goes to plant C4 to blow up a vault and the others just look around at the room, controlling maybe a crowd or guards at gunpoint, silently, acting all concentrated and sh*t...when you can almost hear the time ticking. The score should be fantastic

I'm sure it will be REALLY good. It will provide and set you up with the right vibe for sure. The scores for RDR and MP3 were awesome, really amazing pieces. Totally delivering. That's why I'm very glad to hear they'll do a score for V aswell.

But of course the radio gotta be there at your disposal. In free roam even during action scenes you should be able to pump LET'S GET IT ON or something. Not sure though whether a 5 star situation might not interrupt you with some hectic drums or whatever...I don't think score/radio will be optional, it's like the situation "dictates" the musical "choice" sometimes and that's it. But if it was optional I guess everyone'd be happy

There should have an option to turn the music on and off but I think R* has confirmed that already in G.I or ign's Q&A remember? Dynamic music?

Since the score is done by the guy who did the manhunt soundtrack i expect more ambiance music during mission.

Imagine you just escape from a bank and the cops start to chase you with that in the background

I wouldn't matter. Of course, the song must fit the mission. For example in Far Cry 3 when you must burn down weed plantages. I love that mission because of the song. And yes, there should be a option to turn off the music

Well, like i said, my repeated rant is that the Housers fancy themselves to be Hollywood writer and directors, masters of machinima, and they are merging that interest into their video games. I don't think that is a good idea to do this merge wholsale for a couple of reasons.

One is that there is nothing new in the movies -- every character type and every situation and every plot twist has been done to death, and the best that the Housers can do when writing their movies video games is to imitate what has been done before. With RDR and LA Noire, which are outright cinematic imitations, it kind of works. I love RDR, and I liked the atmosphere of LA Noire, though of course not the linearity of LA Noire.

Second is that video games are supposed to be interactive. But the trend is that video games are becoming like long movies with some shooting and driving interspersed. And Max Payne 3 doesn't even have the driving.

So actually, I like the virtual world design of Max Payen3 and I actually have it on 2 different platforms though I still need to get the DLC, so I can free roam and explore the maps. And the music is good and appropriate in MP3. But seriously, I think of Max Payne 3 as just a long stylized movie with strained writing attempting to sound like a hardened jaded Chandler PI, with some twitch shooting interspersed.

I realize that Rockstar worked hard to make MP3 consistent, arty, moody, dramatic, good visually, good music, etc, but it's just like a slightly overproduced pretentious indie video, with the player being led through on a leash. I actually also watched almost the entire walkthrough of MP3 in HD videos on the web. Like I said, visuals are good, music is good, dialog is kinda corny. It seems so tedious to actually go through all those missions, which are just shooting galleries. I liked the final scene of MP3, where Max walks away along the beach, seemingly happy after all the sh*t is over, like a load has been lifted. They reprised the best piece of music for that scene, as well.

I hope in the next game, MP4, Max is just a badass in full control, and does not spend the entire game voicing an inner dialog feeling sorry for himself. I'm actually trying to figure out what Rockstar thinks they are accomplishing. I think they are just trying to do something different but marketable, and flawed heroes are always a popular theme.

Anyway, after all that, all I mean is that MP3 is the epitome of Rockstar's trend to make their video games into machinima movies for us to watch, 80% story and 20% game, and I sure don't want GTAV to go like that. Backgorund music just pushes it in that direction. I would rather hear the sounds of the city and the sounds of nature when I am not in a car.

It's confirmed in GI that missions will have a musical score.

I'm excited about it for sure! Max Payne 3 had a pretty great soundtrack along the gameplay (especially at the airport shootout, gd), it just amps you up even more.

EDIT: @ saintsrow, Dude, i'm sorry, but you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. The whole cinematic vibe is grounded within the Max Payne series, have you even played part 1 and 2? The cutscenes there were gd comic-style, and even those were very fun. And Max's inner feelings and thoughts were always part of the gameplay.

Of course the game is going to be lineair. It's a shooter, and doesn't pretend to be anything different. Personally, the seemless cutscene-to-gameplay transitions is what makes for a 10x better experience if you ask me. You are more immersed.

Max Payne 3 is right up there with GTA and RDR, and it's better than RDR if you ask me. It never really got the attention it deserved because sooo many people just brushed it aside. Stupid. Their loss. It's one of the most entertaining games of last year, by a long shot. But of course it helps a lot if you had the chance to play the first two.

The radio will still be there, and presumably it will overrule any background music when you get in a vehicle, unless you turn it off

Well as it hasn't had it before, my knee jerk reaction is no, it shouldn't, but I'll only e able to tell for sure if I like it or not after having played V.
