tuff_luv_capo
I know this is a GTA related question, but I didn't want to have to pick a particular game forum to put this in. This forum is full of people from all parts of the world, but I never really thought about this; All of the GTA games take place in American cities, with American traffic patterns. Isn't it bothersome or distracting to play like that? Obviously it is easy to adjust for some, but for me the whole idea of GTA is that you can simulate life and feel like you are part of the game. I'm not sure how I would feel if all GTA's were based off of foreign locations. Also, do you ever have trouble grasping the irony of American landmarks being spoofed in the game? This has nothing to do with ignorance, btw, some are very obscure.

Rewas
America is the place where guns are allowed and drinking under age 21 isn't. No offense, Americans R* HQ are in North America. They visit specific places (states) to take some notes on the city, get a feel to the place and then copy to the game. Going to Europe just for a game isn't really worth it in my opinion. I wouldn't really like to play GTA that takes place in Europe. It won't feel right for GTA game somehow.
Pyrrhic
The road patterns are fine. I would probably struggle with being in the right (as in the side 'right' not the 'correct' side) in real life but becasue I've been living with it in video games for ~10 years it just seems normal. In fact I would probably struggle more if the traffic was directed on the left side!

Finn 7 five 11
Not really a big deal at all, Everything in Australia is Americanized anyway, most films are American and are set in America, just about every TV show (Except Inspector Rex and a couple pommy sitcoms) are American and based in America. It's pretty funny the satire against Americans because i'm not American so it's not bagging me out and it's funny to laugh at American stereotypes that outsiders can more easily see, there are so many things in the game that make me think "Only an American would say/do that." LibertyKing
Well, I'm Canadian, so road patterns don't bother me at all. But, I love American cities. I always wanted to live in the US later. For me, it's not hard to cross the US border, there is a border between the State of New York and Quebec. Canada is still in America. We live like Americans, we were American clothes, we eat American food, we listen to American songs etc... So I feel like home in GTA somehow. Crokey
R* HQ are in North America. They visit specific places (states) to take some notes on the city, get a feel to the place and then copy to the game. Going to Europe just for a game isn't really worth it in my opinion. Rockstar are just the publisher based in New York, Rockstar North, the ones who do the donkey work are based in Edinburgh, Scotland, so they do travel over to the US to scout locations etc. To do it in Europeville wouldn't be an issue, since they could get a budget SqueezyJet flight to where ever. As for the whole being set in America thing from the perspective of the non American, I don't think it really matters since there is such a huge influence of American culture in Film, TV, Internet and other media the concept isn't that hard to grasp. I could imagine it being hard to grasp the other way around, as there always seems to be a quaint olde worldy point of view on Europe.

So no, you aren't American, no self respecting American would ever admit to the second one (though true, no Canadian team's ever won the Stanley Cup). FWIW isnt the border heavily guarded though, or is that something TV's ingrained into my mind with Mounties and horses?
Mr.Mister
Sleeping Dogs is different, took some time getting used too, but I dont mind. Its annoying getting in the usual drivers seat while trying to get away from a group of killers though.
The Scottish Guy
I wish R* North would look out of their f*cking office windows and do an Edinburgh replication. That would be insanely fooking awesome. But yeah, what Croke said.

Man, it took me a while to get used to entering the right side of the car and driving on the left side of the road in that game. But with respect to OP, living in Canada, the whole concept of driving in GTA and other things never bothered me. I mean, I live in America Lite, so understanding the humour in Grand Theft AUto isn't an issue (there might be a few subtle things, but for the most part, it's crystal clear). na89340qv0n34b09q340
Being American, games set in Europe aren't that big a deal either. I remember being able to adapt to the roads in Paris and Tokyo in Midnight Club 2 easily when I was a kid. Haven't seen much satire (or maybe it flew right by me) because most of the games set in Europe that I play only use Europe to be set internationally (Midnight Club, Call of Duty, Red Dead Redemption, etc.), and not to parody culture like GTA IV does. Double L.
Nope, i have been following American culture from movies, games, songs or somethings like that since 6 years old, it's not unusual for me. For Grand Theft Auto, America is the best country for that. I always wanted to live in America. GTA and America inseparable couples.
Max
The games being set in America really don't bother me at all, as others have said we're used to it and for the most part foreigners are far more clued into American culture than vice versa so even some pretty obscure cultural reference are normally picked up on. That being said, I do wish they'd make GTA: Bogota or a game set in London in the 80s because that would be brilliant. I read a concept thread a few years back in which they went into great detail about their propsed GTA:London and it was truly fascinating. Rise of the rave culture and the drug trade that came with it, football violence, widespread racism and gang violence. Looked like it had the makings of a brilliant game. But do you really think that they could reach a speeding car with horses ? And I never said I was American. I said that Canada is in North America.
