ccrogers15
About time they did something to this series. It gets better, though. No only is this an HD remake, but it’s going to incorporate things like Steam Workshop support and Steam multiplayer. That’s right; you can play Age of Empires II HD with all your Steam friends. It’s pretty much the dream come true for everyone that played the game as a child. The game’s coming exclusively to Steam, and Hidden Path Entertainment‘s picked up development duties now that Ensemble Studios no longer exists. Score one for Valve, though, as the current $19.99 price — discounted to $17.99 until it launches on April 9th — will absolutely line their pockets and then some. http://www.geekosystem.com/age-of-empires-ii-hd/ BEST OF ALL. buzbegone
This will be awesome! Of all the games to remaster, they pick this. The days of having to install a 3rd party widescreen patch are finally over! Pre-purchased and I get to play it on the 5th instead. stinomontana
Oh man i forgot all about this game, wich i played the sh*t out of it when i was young. might buy this one when the price drops a bit. 20€ seems a bit much for such an old game.
Red Hat
Age of Empires was my second best game in child hood I usually played Roadrash and Age of Empires at that time...and i had a lot of fun too...
ilya
Discovered it years later but still put many hours into it. Tempting, but too expensive for such an old game and it's not a true HD remake, so I'll probably wait till the Xmas sale.. Fireman
I can't believe half the changes actually look worse than before. It's like the Baldur's Gate "HD remake" where nothing was better than in the mod which shifted BG 1 to BG 2's engine; BG Tutu. Still gonna play it, only to check if anything did actually get improved.
Audiophile
Oh God. So many memories of my childhood just came flooding in right now. Man tears. I am getting this for sure. I played this for hours when I was younger, one of the best games I have ever played. All we know now is: Support for bigger screens, Steam functionality, revamped multiplayer, multi-screen support and a couple of graphic upgrades (damaged building fire, ocean) as seen in the trailer. Again I ask, what changes are throwing you off?
Fireman
Again I ask, what changes are throwing you off? The building fire you mentioned is more of a downgrade, it looks worse. It's the only thing they animated (and I Heard the water has some animations now, which I haven't been able to find in the trailer) and it looks like it's completely static, atleast the old flames seemed like they were blown away by the wind. My problem is that it doesn't feel like a remake, the animations simply look sped up in the short clips we see. The sprites haven't changed, it doesn't seem like they updated animations. It's more like a mod that changes the resolution. Even all the textures seem to be the same. Boats now EXPLODE when hit, leaving no debris behind but instantly dissappearing, for example. I'm hoping you can zoom in as well. Also here's a screenshot for reference: I'm all up for support for multiplayer and steam, but you can't call it a HD remake... just call it a re-release or something. I'm not sure what the price will be though, but I'm guessing above $10,-, which is not worth it for a mod that increases resolution. buzbegone
I agree that the fire is a bit of a gutsy move but to be fair, some things had to be updated otherwise people would complain (Like some are now). Where does it says that it's a HD remake? As far as I can tell, the only thing HD is the enhanced screen size. There's only so much quality a Youtube video can deliver of a game that may very well hasn't been given the spit and polish yet. I'm going to wait until April to have my final say. But I will state now this game is all about gameplay, not graphics. Edited March 11, 2013 by buzbegone

Fireman
But I will state now this game is all about gameplay, not graphics. I agree with you, however this is JUST a graphic enhanced edition, and thus this remake is completely about graphics. Age of Empires 2 will still be AoE2, which was awesome and still is, but these enhancements aren't worth the $20,-, as you can still play Age of Empire 2 online either way. You can but good luck finding another person to play with the orignal as TheZone is now defunct. Thought it over and I think it's mainly multiplayer that sells this for me as I never had the experience of AoEII online. Also, rechecked the trailer and the boats sink as they normally did. buzbegone
It's the 5th of April over here and despite pre-ordering with the promise of a 5/4 early release, I've preloaded it but can't yet play. Pretty irritating as I happen to have a free day. The game will officially unlock for pre-purchasers on Steam at approximately 10AM Pacific time (GMT -7), April 5th, 2013.
