Deffpony
You guys want to know how I heard he died...? I was in the library at my university campus studying. Suddenly I heard a group of people talking loudly in Spanish. Then it became almost a roar of cheering. As I left the library there were hundreds of people cheering. My school has ALOT of Venezuelans that attend. I asked one of them, who was waving a Venezuelan flag, what was going on. I thought it was some soccer game or some sh*t. He told me Chavez was dead and Venezuela was saved. Out of the hundreds of Venezuelans I know, yes hundreds, I have never met one person who supported Chavez. I was in a house full of Venezuelan people on the day of the 2012 election. I barely knew anyone and everyone was watching the Venezuelan news channel (the one that the logo is a red, blue and yellow V, forgot the name) and when the elections were announced for Chavez, not Capriles, people were crying. It was almost overwhelming being there since I am not Venezuelan, but still, a moment that solidified my negative opinion on Chavez. Exactly. I think once you see how much his country hates him there is nothing that can make him seem decent again. I remember the election too. There were like 6 fights at school the next day from Americans telling Venezuelan kids to get over it. My fb is flooded with praises of his death in Spanish. GTA_stu
I'm not saying he was an amazing person and leader, I'm just trying to point out he doesn't deserve all the hate he's getting, a lot of which is just complete lies. Things like "He was one of the worst dictators in the world" is just not a true reflection at all. I'm only saying that he did a lot to help out the ordinary working class people who actually live in Venezuela. In 2000 the UN set out it's so called "Millennium Development Goals" which all nations pledged to try and address. These were 8 goals designed to try and fight social and development problems, stuff like hunger, illiteracy and infant mortality. And in all 8 Venezuela excelled, the president of the general assembly of the United Nations even referred to Venezuela as being a model for all other countries. The lives of the poor in Venezuela improved, access to health care and education greatly improved. It's a fact. "under-nutrition was lowered drastically from its 1998-2000 level of 21% to its 2005-2007 level of 6%" "In 2008, the children under-five mortality rate was 16.35 per every 1,000 births, a 49% decrease from 1990"
Deffpony
Stu: I agree. He wasn't this generations hitler or anything. As far as all the good he has done, I wish I could find the article I read last year, but apparently it's widely accepted that its all lies. Supposedly Chavez bought the right people and spread some sort of Venezuela Prosperity propaganda. I don't know what the truth is. I just know he wasn't good for thy country, even if he did some good.

fgcarva1
Oh, by all means, he was no Hitler, but he harmed Venezuela and Latin America more than fixing it... he did some good, but he did more bad. Closing a dozen radio and TV channels, newspapers, etc. Shut them all down if they opposed his administration. Various allegations of rigged elections (but then again, that happens everywhere), millions of Venezuelans who migrated abroad after that one April 2002 issue which has been mentioned, supporting FARC which in no ways is even comparable to any other terrorist group (say, the IRA or the Basque Party), the FARC kidnaps and murders hundreds of innocent people, they are not political. He has created a sh*tstorm in the continent and with him out of the question I'm sure tensions will die down.

fgcarva1
So is that Nicholas Maduro guy the next president? He's the interim President for the next 30 days until elections are held. Quite strange to be honest that he's 'interim' President. In most countries, if the President died, the VP would take over for the remainder of the term (given it's a Presidentialist system, of course). MIKON8ERISBACK
He was admitted to a Cuban hospital and was never heard from again. He most likely died at the hospital either the day of or shortly after his surgery. I've been following this story for months. Since December of 2012, the media went out of their way to cover up the fact that it happened. He was a horrible dictator that repeatedly gave the Western World the big middle finger every step of the way. He hated anybody who didn't fit his ideology and created a country with some of the lowest press freedom rankings in the world. sivispacem
To hate the man simply because he was a socialist is naive. He was one of the few in the world who actually stood up to the greed of corporate multinationals and put the people of his nation first. What, by stealing land from those who had worked hard all their lives to produce something, and then leaving it to fester as a symbol of why never to be successful in Venezuela? By implementing government-run cartels and personally financially profiting from his brand of Socialism? Supporting terrorist organisations trying to undermine the governments in Peru and Colombia, and also effectively contributing towards international drug smuggling by doing so? By rigging elections using violence, bribery and extortion to ensure that he remained in power? He was a borderline-dictator. I won't miss him and nor will history. Distrom
So is that Nicholas Maduro guy the next president? No, for 30 days Diosdado Cabello (another asshole), as he is the president of the aational Assembly, he would be the president for 30 days, then they must call for elections, where Maduro will be candidate for the elections, vs Capriles again maybe, now that Chavez is dead, I wonder if that f*cking bus driver Maduro could cheat on the elections (like they have been doing for years), because if he loose, all those corrupt bastards who ruined this country will go to jail. Mark
To hate the man simply because he was a socialist is naive. He wasn't a Socialist. A true Socialist doesn't establish a personality cult, which Chavez did. He was a populist, nothing more. And I have never known a populist that could be trusted with even the slightest amount of power. A populist, a braggart, an aspiring tyrant. But not a Socialist. Not in any true sense of the word. Utterly agreed. He's probably given socialism its worst reputation since the National Socialists of Germany. It seems that for all the good of socialism, tyranny in the veil of apparent 'socialism' is destroying the perception of it.
