Say what you want about how next gen will be a "golden era" or whatever, but it's difficult for developers to work with new hardware. You saw it with GTA V, and part of the reason why GTA V looks so special is because Rockstar now have over 8 years working with the current hardware.

 

Sure, if the game were next gen there might be a few technical improvements, but the game would be fundamentally flawed in many other areas.

In fact you're wrong. Read a few articles published by developers, the last one I remember was UBISOFT and how they say it's easier to make games now with this gen then it was with the current gen. Now they code it on a PC and port with almost the same settings as a High End PC, which is a lot easier then it was with other consoles, specially PS3. Even not knowing the technical problems, one is easy to spot... create something beautiful and then shrink it the max possible to feat on each one of them.

 

There was a huge leap in technology that made developing better and easier, but that isn't being used because the old consoles are holding it back.

I'm pretty sure they will release a "PS 4 / X720" version later next year, maybe together with the PC version, as the PS4 is more based on PC technology this sound like a logical step for me.

So in the end, I'm not disappointed at all. I only fear that it will take another 5 years now until the next GTA, and until then other developers might surpass R* in terms of graphics and gameplay, as they will have more experience with the system.

 

 

Yeah I think 5 years will be the standard wait for GTA now. Once this is out, we'll have new consoles soon and it will take them at least 4 or 5 years to develop for PS4/720. After this we'll have GTA Next in and around 2018 . If we get about 10 years out of the next gen of consoles we'll probably only see 2 GTA's on next-gen. Question is.. will the first GTA on the next-gen be all stripped of features again?

The next Grand theft Auto game after GTA V will obviously release for the next-gen consoles but it shouldn't be that hard this time to optimize the engine for the new consoles. Rockstar proved that RAGE is an engine with great capabilities and the fact that there were articles in the past that state that the programming of the new consoles will be less of a pain compared to the current ones, especially compared to PlayStation 3, might be good news. Just look at the hardware of the PS4, it's very similar to a PC so that does not only mean that the PC versions of future games will be certainly well optimized, that also means that the development of videogames will be easier, thus it takes less time to create games. That is the theory, let's hope that the practise will be similar!

Interesting points actually. Maybe this gen will be like a sort of dark phase in my life of gaming (referring to my disappointment of GTA in the HD era/ lack of new GTA's)

 

But yes with next gen console having a more PC-like architecture I'm hopeful we might not see mammoth gaps between GTA's or other Rockstar series.

Giving the fact that gta iv is the only gta on current consoles, I feel like they can push the current console much further than gta iv. + the rage engine is fantastic! I bet they will improve this engine in V in every aspect. The next gen gta will definitely feature a new more advanced engine. There isn't much to discuss really. Rockstar does it best every time 10/10, a+. So we will just have to wait for them to publish future titles.

An idea about the new consoles:

 

We know so little about the ps4, the x720 or whatever hasn't even been announced yet... The first games on a brand new console will kinda suck. Not polished enough and all that. Rockstar needs some time to adjust to the new hardware and from 4-5 years from now, we will see something like GTA VI (vice city remake maybe) that will blow everyone away. I can't say it will be the best game ever made but it will definitely be the best produced game ever made/best technology in a video game so far. Gta V will be absolutely amazing no doubt, but imagine what will rockstar do with the next gta (next gen).

The reason I want to see it on next gen is because it will mean a hell of a lot smoother FPS, much better AA ( less jaggies), less pop in, better textures and an improvement on graphics quality. By this I don't mean making it new for next gen BUT just making V also available for next gen as well to prove that much better gaming experience.
