Graven
Vectors are scalable art. You can scale them without losing quality, unlike a pixel/raster image when scaled up becomes blurry. Vector applications are used mainly for Logo, text etc. creation. Cartoons also because of the basic coloring. CAD programs are also vector based. You have lot of the same tools still as in a pixel-based editor but vectors are easier to edit. Photoshop does have a limited vector editing in the form of "shapes". Most knows vector apps are Illustrator, Freehand MX (discontinued 2005, still rocking and works in Win7) CorelDraw (Been using this at work), Xara Designer. If You want a freeware, Inkscape is your best choice -> http://inkscape.org/

Graven
What image? My guess is that You tried to save pixel image as wmf. Post a screencap of your vector image. It does not matter if it has a fill color, or is just an outline (stroke). Use View->display mode->outline. Your vector should look something like this: And save it to emf, it is enhanced version of wmf and is smoother. Wmf does not necessarily work from Inkscape. I´ve tried from other editors and it does work but it´s not as good as emf. Before saving, make sure to resize page to selection: One more thing: If your vector is made of multiple parts, You need to group it. Tracing creates sometimes (depends of tracing method) multiple parts. You may need to delete some of the (inside) parts. Only outline is needed if Your model does not have holes in it. If it has holes You need to "punch" them. This is done with Path->exclusion. If You create black, or other 1-color png of your model in Photoshop and trace it in Inkscape this will be no problem. Just remember to tick "remove background" in trace settings. If You don´t get it, You need to learn the software from ground up. Inkscape includes tutorials which You should go through before anything else. Edited March 4, 2013 by Graven
