What's the point of the marketing?

What's the point of Rockstar's marketing campaign!? Why do they go for months without giving us any new info? Is this some kind of marketing experiment they're trying to pull on us? It's a really bad experiment, if it is.

Why do people say their marketing is "bad"? You're posting this on a V forum, I'd say they have you hook, line, sinker.

That is not a test or anything like this. GTA V has been delayed by four months thus the marketing campaign has been delayed by four months as well! Rockstar did the exact same thing when they delayed GTA IV in August 2007.

They keep talking about it, so my guess that its working...Also the GTA franchise has 100M+ sales and is in the top 5 best selling franchise on top of it soooo. marketing does not sell a game word to mouth sells a game. Its always been that way, sure it helps having a trailer, but when you get a trailer thousands of fan decypher its contents and put it on sites like this to pread the information...Or just word to mouth.

Yep that's right.

They don;t want to spoil the game by revealing too much as well. Quit bitching, we have boatloads of information already.

I remember getting screenshots in between August 2007 up until April 2008

They have already released a lot more than most games do.

And it's obvious that their marketing is working because when they announce or release something, people go absolutely crazy over it! So they must be doing something right.

Agreed, it's a complete joke. If they've delayed the game they could at least make up for it with some more screenshots or artwork. Pisses me off that they're being silent again.

April 2008 was the month when GTA IV was released so it's obvious that they would continue to market the game a few months before the release. If I remember right then the info drought of GTA IV started right after the delay and lasted until December 2007 so around four months. GTA V is still around six and a half months away so that's still plenty of time to knock off the marketing again at some point.

The point of the marketing campaign is to make everyone think they're incompetent...it worked!

Bottom line is, none of us are marketing experts.

Bottom line, I can be a pretty damn good marketing expert too, if being a "marketing expert" just means putting together a couple of trailers over a period of 1.5 years, or tossing out a few screenshots at my whim, with no rhyme or reason. sarcasm.gif

I had this ridiculous idea that marketing experts actually did something for their paycheck. tounge.gif

As I have said elsewhere on this forum, it seems to me that any decent marketing person in Rockstar would be absolutely bursting at the seams to do their job and create a beautiful marketing campaign for GTAV with the loads of info that must be available on the GTAV dev servers. It must be frustrating as hell for the good people who want to do their work well, to be held down by the apparent anticipation marketing geniuses running the show. angry.gif

The answer is quite simple. It's not marketing.

People made the same mistake last year during the Great Information Drought of 2012. Some people thought that it was some strange and clever new marketing technique. But in fact, that wasn't marketing either, it wasn't anything. This isn't anything.

You'll know when the marketing happens. They tell us stuff, release screenshots and trailers, do magazine articles and interviews, make announcements, put up posters. You know, the usual stuff. I reckon, pretty strongly, that marketing proper will commence in June.

But this ... this silence? It is what it is. It's not marketing. It's silence.

Rockstar is pretty notorious lately for sh*tty marketing. They're able to get away with it because of their popularity and fanbase. If they didn't have us, the rabid fans who will get this game day 1 regardless of anything, they wouldn't dare treat us the way they do.

It's not marketing they're just unorganized with this game, too much delays has made them stop from giving us too much info this early.

Ok for all whose using this line, check this out;

Yeah sure, it's "working" in our tight knit gta forums and probably various other gta based forums but out here in the real world and outside the forum, this game is pretty much forgotten (hell there's people that doesn't know that a new GTA is coming period!).

Thing is, the "Apple silent treatment then big explosion" marketing scheme was their intention, definitely, although it was handled a little shakey but it did kinda work during that time. But when the delay happened, their marketing scheme failed miserably. And not solely based on the delay itself, but how they are currently handling it now.....by doing absolutely nothing to compensate their customers and pretty much telling you to "f*ck off" on the Newswire comments and emails. At this point to be honest, I don't even think Rockstar knows what the f*ck to do right now and just blowing people off until they can find a way to unf*ck themselves.

Another small detail where I can see how their marketing failed was the fact that they didn't put their game out there ENOUGH. Yeah they definitely hyped up us and game news site and magazines and such but not enough for the general public. Yes the point of the marketing was to be super secret and everything but they could've did much more with it for the general public to catch on. Not enough viral marketing, Easter eggs and such, you know like spread their marketing and viral campaign out more than just their Newswire site (like viral YouTube clips, more viral Facebook sites, more TEASER posters/artwork in public areas, etc).

Our hopes is to get this game as hyped up and popular to everyone like a new COD game or somthing, not to just only GTA fans and gamers.

I have no doubt in my mind that if the game came on schedule, being late April/early May, we would have already seen the third trailer.

Your sig just made me realize that Franklin, Michael and Trevor are most likely the same person. Think Michael Jackson kind of "transformation" from Franklin to Michael (see?) and Smeagol/Gollum style from Michael to Trevor. Damn.

So yeah, um. Marketing. Like, f*ck that!

When it comes to marketing, Rockstar's team knows what they're doing.

They have a pretty strong track record with launches -- GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, and Max Payne 3 -- so it's not like they haven't been busy for the last several years.

GTA V's delay, while unfortunate, isn't uncommon for big projects. Folks are ambitious about timelines, but sh*t always happens, and stuff gets pushed back.

Unfortunately that leads to a no-win situation. Rush the product and customers are disappointed with the result; delay the product and customers are frustrated with the wait.

But that's just the way it is. C'est la vie.

TL;DR = Don't blame the marketing department for production/project management issues.

Dragon got it right, I think. I'm sure the marketing crew were ready to go, but they had to put the brakes on because of the project delay. It threw off their timelines.

the point of marketing is to advertise the game devil.giftounge.gif and they go for months because they said that they only want to release 100% correct info and they also replied in the newswire a while back that they have nothing new to share. i know this long wait of no new info sucks but don't worry one of these days we'll get something new and before you know it ti will be sept 17th smile.gif

GTA isn't as big as many people here and Rockstar might think. 5 years is just too long. And considering the transition the industry is going through at the moment, I just don't understand why Rockstar doesn't make some noise already.

I'd say it is. GTA San Andreas is the most sold Playstation 2 video game ever. GTA IV is Playstation 3's 5th. Almost every gamer recognizes the GTA franchise.

That's true! But, they went about it all wrong. They should've just released a screen a month up 'til now instead of all close together, then go silent for long periods of time. That would've kept a steady flow of hype going. Instead, they don't deliver when they say they are and pile a delay on top of that. The day the delay was announced, R* should've gave a screen to soften the blow. Their marketing does suck Hyena b*lls.

It is. If it wasn't big, there wouldn't be as many GTA's as there is now O_O From GTA 1, all the way to V and everyone of them is successful. Especially, San Andreas! Literally the most popular and entertaining game on the PS2.
