school popularity is bollocks.... most of the so called "popular kids" back then are now fat/obese or just nothing special in their lives... boring.

popular = unpopular

Lol...popularity. I guess my school was different. If you knew how to make friends people knew you. If you didn't talk much then not as many people know you. Popularity didn't really matter to anyone. It was just about having fun and getting through school. I've never had a problem making friends but I also put more value into the friends I do make. I actually still stay in contact with my closest friends from middle school.

If you were a douchebag at my old schools you were likely to get your ass kicked sooner or later.

High School is just one giants popularity contest

See, here's the thing thing though. I have never felt that way about school. School is all about getting to know people and studies for me. No one in my school was like OOOH I WANT TO BE POPULAR!

I literally like everyone in my school. My classmates, juniors, teachers, that security guard that looks like Albert Einstein, everyone. So I don't get why popularity is a big thing for you guys. I made many friends in my former school. I have never felt left out. And being the sweetest nicest guy or the funniest charming dude will get you the girl.

So yeah, is it the fact that you guys have a small group of friends hence making you feel left out and unwanted by the school's social system or is it just different from my country? Because lots of teenagers here gets influenced a lot by American culture. You just have to interact with people, that's all. The nicest thing you can ever say to anyone is "I would really love to get to know you more."

I think it's just different in your country, because from what I've heard stuff like this is pretty common in most high schools around the world. Either that, or you're among the 'popular' ones and so can't see things from the OP's POV.

Well I guess I can't see from most of you guys POV then. Wait... does that mean I'm the.... douchebag?! tounge.gif

ryuclan got it right. It's all about making friends. I mean if you're a known loser then I guess it's pretty hard. Also being a gamer is nothing to be shy of. Gamer friends, and not the pathetic playing League Of Legends for 12 hours straight nerdy ones, are okay guys and girls too.

"Don't worry, because after high school all those dumb jocks amount to nothing, and all your years of sitting in your room seething with envy because they got hot girls won't matter because those girls will realise you're a 'nice guy' and ditch him and you'll become a rich architect and they'll all end up pumping your gas!"

Get real.

I'm out of high school so I don't deal with popular kids or "in crowds" anymore but I do have a histrionic friend who manages to enchant a lot of people into thinking he's a great guy when he's probably the least sincere, biggest piece of sh*t I've ever met in my life. I think his charisma is what does it for people, he recently told me he has a plan to become mayor of the town we live in and I don't doubt that he could make it happen assuming he doesn't get involved with a hooker's murder or any kind of DUI hit and run situation in the near future. His popularity only reminds me how easy it is to win people over with a bit of social finesse and a lot of over hyped bullsh*t.

i've never been very popular xcept in my own circle of friends and with people i met online, i've always been "different" than the class i was in (barely had any "friends" there, all of my friends were in other classes) because those people were all about fashion and style and sh*t...had to deal with that for 4 years, then i went to college and things changed big time, then i quit college and started working and it's even better now, people are assholes but at least adults dare to say more things to the face, i noticed the people that were so popular in secondary often acted like friends towards eachother but behind eachoter's backs they were blackmailing etc...depressing

these days there's some guy in the class of my gf (she's in her 7th year in secondary) who still thinks it's important to behave "alpha male" and "cool" (swag yolo 'nd sh*t) and is insulting her constantly to look cool, since i never did anything back to the ppl that did such things to me for the same reason back when i was in secondary i think there's a time about to come where i'll just go with my girlfriend to her school and trashtalk that piece of sh*t down to the ground, seriously, popular ("popular") people piss me off big time.

of course some deserve it by being very nice guys, but 90% are scumbags imo

What's more annoying is people who feel the need to rant on a GTAForums site about such trivial sh*t like 'I hate popular people.' If they're popular, then let them live in their fantasy world. Deal with your own sh*t. dozingoff.gif

no one said that.

but the point is that high school isn't real.

being popular in high school doesn't mean you'll be popular after high school.

being a loser in high school doesn't mean you'll be a loser after high school.

the point is that anything can change for anyone once they finish school.

the way kids socialize in school is not the way people socialize as adults in the real world.

Mister Pink

I was watching The Perks of Being a Wallflower and at the start I was disliking it due to the protag being new to the school and this scenario where it was almost a nightmare for the kid to sit and eat lunch. I've seen this is so many American films where it's like a kids worst nightmare to sit at lunch because you have all these social cliques. Is it really that bad or am I just seeing this through Hollywood?

Schools weren't really like that where I'm from. You either liked or disliked someone. There wasn't troupes of jocks or nerds that all hung out. Well there was to a point but most people were friendly to you. So long as you didn't wreck anyone's head with bullsh*t or annoyed people, you get a long fine.

El_Diablo makes a good point though. It's bullsh*t. When you leave school and you bump in to people it's all forgotten about. Whatever 'it' was.

Depends on the school. Not every school in the U.S. are the same. Also how they depict it in movies, I think is a little over exaggeration.

It's really like that, but just like everything else, Hollywood/the media exaggerate things. More specifically, they exaggerate the clean cut conglomeration of these different cliques. In real life, it's not quite that easy to tell each social clique apart on the surface because everyone's so shallow that they generally dress the same trying to achieve the look that's hip at the time (funny how we impose a dress code on ourselves at such a young age looking back at it lol.gif ). When you look harder though, fashion is the main indicator of who does what. This is especially the case in the warmer months when the Northfaces and jeans come off. I hate to generalize since modern suburban HS cliques vary by culture/region within the US; but they are generally...

- Emo/Goth: People who have been exposed to emotional adversity and wear deviant black clothing to show they don't care when they really do. A truly first world phenomena.

- Alpha Males: Mostly the athletes but this includes the all males who generally attract pussy regardless of their social group.

- Hipsters: People who will out hip anyone (even the "in crowd") with their supposedly esoteric awareness of everything but generally art (everything from music to fashion to gaming). Many find this annoying, yet it seems to be a defense mechanism against being labeled a square. This group includes many former emo people who saw an escape route to a more accepted/hip social status.

- Bros: These males tend to be embrace the image of being cocky, conceded, and/or douchy. They're generally athletes at some level. However being a bro is generally only defined as those who are close to their fellow "bros" (before hoes) and consider relationships w/females beyond sex to be dubious. In college, they filter into fraternities. In the south, some will pretend to be rednecks despite living in a >$500,000 home. In this case, they drive a highly accessorized large pickup truck (i.e: Ford F-250) and listen to this sh*tty new-wave of pop country.

- Biddy/Preppy: The female counterpart to a bro. They are characterized as being shallow and the first selection of pussy for the bros and any alpha males interested. Some have daddy issues. Some just wanna have fun. Whatever the reason, they are the most sexually active/experienced despite their young age and tend to end up with STDs. They have been known to say things like, "Oh shat Rebecca did you see that fight last party between JT an Brody? It was like that episode of 'The Hills' but way more .....I don't know shat". They are not all stupid as the stereotype reflects, but their looks often shield them from having to build personalities and intelligence beyond the realm of the high school social seen. Though they don't include all of the most attractive girls in the school, being attractive is the only requirement. In college, they filter into sororities.

- Party/ "The In Crowd": Anyone relevant. This includes any one who would be welcomed at a party (not just let in). Those who have "contributed" anything to the local sh*t slinging carnival in America known as the high school experience are considered to be a part of the crowd. They may be of any group, but this group typically works from a social base of alpha males, bros, and biddy.

- Unaffiliated/Hybrid: Some people just can't be adequately labeled. They kind of take what works from the other social groups culturally and just graduate. This is the largest group in some schools as these people just mingle with everyone. Trinidad James sucks; but he said it best, "This ain't for no f*ck niggas...If you a real nigga then f*ck wit me". Regardless of one's social origins this group likes chill people they hate douchebags. Several people who have been exhausted from the BS of other social groups fall into this one. This group grows towards the end of HS as it's essentially the post-HS mindset anyway. This was my group...more or less.

- "Hood" Kids: Essentially the wild card. Usually those from rough and/or disadvantaged ethnic backgrounds. They are responsible for the most fights, talent, and entertainment. When angry, they aren't afraid to talk to the teacher as if she were some skank. They will put anyone in their place who crosses "the line" and are the only group who the bros and alpha males may submit to in times of conflict. Though disproportionately from the working class or poor, they also include affluent individuals from minority backgrounds who feel compelled to conform to those that look like them. Many of them are athletes and if black, stand ready to capitalize on the biddy who have BDS (black dick syndrome).

- "Rejects": They hang out with whoever's left and will generally attempt to reel in the new kids before they settle into the other groups. They have limited social skills and socialize accordingly.

...within each of these groups, you generally see a wide range of affluence, attractiveness, social status, and intelligence but many of these traits are in highly concentrated within the in crowd (more specifically biddys and bros). Technically none of these groups are mutually exclusive other than the gender differences of course.

Most people here are spot on about high school being irrelevant on a social level. As long as you don't traumatize yourself with social awkwardness, you'll be fine. You don't give a single f*ck after you leave town for college and the entire region for a career in many cases.

There's always been the rich crowd, the poor crowd, the weirdos, the geeks, the smokers. It happens everywhere. All you can do is be yourself, be kind to everyone no matter what their standing is, and you'll be remembered for that. Mingle with everyone. That's how I was and it actually worked out pretty good. Sometimes it takes a while to get noticed, but don't worry. It will happen when it's supposed to. Just do your thing and don't care who's looking or what other people think.

Depends on the school. Not every school in the U.S. are the same. Also how they depict it in movies, I think is a little over exaggeration.

I went to a small high school, graduating class under 100. There weren't cliques exactly, but

there were groups of kids who stayed with their group mostly (maybe cliques after all?) --

but definitely didn't alienate anyone from dropping by. The basketball guys kept to themselves,

the nerdier ones didn't really stick together but you could tell they were "left out" and as far

as girls went, their groups changed on a weekly basis based on who was mad at who at any

given time.

The schools don't exactly help if you are opposed to cliques. Organizing chess clubs, basketball

practice that's not open to the public, and sh*t like that definitely helped breed private groups.

I sometimes wish I went to a school that was a carbon copy of Bully, the video game.
