I Want Violence

The Pizza Delivery Guy

When I think about Grand Theft Auto I think of brutality, profanity, destruction. I think of there actually being a reason for parents to keep their children from playing it. Recently there have been a lot of ideas in this sub-forum that thinks of the children. "Profanity Filter?" I saw another one about blood levels? Are you kidding me? This is Grand Theft Auto. Grand. Theft. Auto.

This game is not made for kids. It is specifically designed for adults to be able to enjoy gaming as much as children do. That's what it was all about in '97, that's what it should all be now. There should be absolutely nothing to protect children in these games. They shouldn't be playing it to begin with!!

If you're a smart parent, and truly believe that your child is ready to play GTA, then by all means go right ahead. But we don't need filters for these kids to be "protected" from the very thing that makes GTA GTA. The game is rated M17+ for a reason, Pegi 18.

GTA is not made for children, therefore it should not be catered to children. I want violence. I want blood and gore.

I want to be able to shoot a pedestrian in their head and use the severed skull as a food bowl for their pets. They're collections of pixels, and we are not hurting anything but our good standing with the police pixels in the vicinity of the pixelated game. There's no need to censor it. I want violence.

I'm with OP. It's not R*s responsibility to make sure my children aren't exposed to that stuff, it's mine. Their responsibility is to see that people like me get their money worth in joy, and committing heinous acts of murder virtually does that for me.

I expect it to be similar to MP3 if not better. Even if its at the same level as MP3 I will be happy with.

Well you know the Australian government these days confused.gif

I get where you're coming from, but I'm getting tired of these "Australian government" comments. R* isn't making games for one continent. They should make the game they want without censoring anything unless they're forced to for business reasons, but that should be specific to the region.

I agree with the OP. GTA should be brutal because of the nature of the game. I get so impressed with films like Drive, because I don't want censored violence. If R* wants to tell gamers to kill people in their games, don't go soft on us. As a gamer/human I know the difference between a pistol and an RPG. If I choose to use the messier weapon, I should get messier results. It's really that simple.

It bugs me when less controversial games have more violence.

It will certainly be interesting to see the level of violence in this game, there is still a lot of pressure by governments to tone it all down and the argument for "Its an 18 cert" really makes no difference, it never has, kids still play it, parents still buy it.

Australia has taken a stance, I wonder if any other countries are thinking the same and R* have no choice but to tone it down. Hope not because like the TS, I have always liked the violence in GTA, I never took it seriously and doubt anyone else has, but the governments...

I agree with the OP, I wanna be in a shootout with the cops in a hospital and after I kill one of them, cut his face off ala Hannibal Lecter, put on his cop uni, hide the body and attempt to sneak off into that good night. I want bodies to pile up and make a river of blood in the streets. Then I steal a canoe and ride the crimson waters to my getaway.

ill-thoughts

I love the violence but I always tone down the blood and gore in every game I play, most games over-do it. when you shoot someone in real life, rarely ever is there BLOOD SQUISHING EVERYWHERE LIKE A FOUNTAIN.

unless you use a chainsaw....that would warrant the fountain.

I killed my therapist and use her blood as lubricant.

I agree that Rockstar doesn't need to think about our children or whatever when making games, all they need to focus on is making the game they envisioned. Making a game that matters artistically and, most importantly, is fun to get lost in. However, cranking up the blood levels to unrealistic heights or using precious time and resources to implement a complicated limb severing system is development time better spent elsewhere, on more central areas of game design.

When cutting people into pieces actually adds something to the experience, I'm all for it.(For instance in Half-Life 2's Ravenholm section where zombies get cut in half and the power of the gravity gun is thus shown. Yet, later on I tried to cut the Combine forces in the same fashion only to be disappointed when it didn't work. That's a case where, IMO, they should have just went all the way with the gore system instead of opting for this illogical solution)

Extreme violence is much more easily tolerable when presented in a somehow fantastical setting. Hotline Miami is an example of this as it is very violent but since it's very pixelated it is quite charming actually.

But looking at a photorealistic pedestrian in GTA5 getting his head mashed by a truck sounds like a way to gain the game unnecessary controversy. That example, though, would arguably give something to the game experience (further making driving over people a gruesome act that it is in real life) and because of the restrictions of technology the head would probably just make a big blood spurt, leave a wet, squishy mark on the road, and disappear.

I'm all for making the game more immersive and guns having more impact on targets is one way to do that. GTAIV made driving over pedestrians considerably more gruesome than it was previously and clearly the same treatment could be given to the simple act of shooting someone in the head. In reality, it would create a huge mess especially if using a big caliber gun so I'd argue that realistic gore would evoke stronger emotions in the players and maybe cause them to look at their actions with a bit more disdain. Therefore, added violence might actually force players to see the horrible consequences of shooting someone.

As long as there is a reason for gore other than pleasing blood hungry maniacs then I'm behind it.

Paper Mario

OP, I think you are wrong. It shouldn't be too violent! And nobody loves too much gore...

AARGH! Wow! Can you imagine if I really was like that? Man, that would suck. On a serious note though, I completely agree with you OP! It is rated 18+ for a reason. There should be violence, gore and uncensored sh*t as much as possible! We are no kids, and kids should not be able to play this unless their parents say it's ok. What the hell is the rating for then anyway?

It is M for mature, I am mature therefore I can handle gore and it does not want me to go out and harm REAL people.

I agree with the OP. But one also has to bear in mind the difference between older games and these newer ones.

You see, in GTA:III and VC the graphics were quite cartoony. So the violence could be a little bit cartoony too. They could get away with blowing off arms and legs and great gushing fountains of blood. And it was fun. There was a clear separation between such depictions in the game and real life.

I think the issue is that graphics are getting more and more life like. In fact, I'd say that proper photo realistic graphics will be possible in a few years time. GTA has been moving more toward realism, especially graphics-wise. I think that more realistic gore is making certification bodies a little more nervous/concerned.

If GTA was still using cartoony graphics, I don't think we'd be having this discussion.

I agree with everything you said and I also think this should apply to any other game that wants to be aimed at adults.

Well you know the Australian government isn't really what's keeping Rockstar on it's leash. They can do whatever the f*ck they want. In fact, I can't care less when it comes to the GTA series being released or not in Australia confused.gif

I don't think that to be a good game needs so high levels of violence, GTA is not just about blood and gore; there are games focused on that. We are not in 97 anymore, back then the violence filled the espace other features couldn't due to the technology. I think an adult game doesn't need just violence.

I rather they focus more on other aspects on the game.

I don't think that R* should cave to crooked governments. Should directors tone down their movies to please politicians? It's rediculous. It's art, and when a government body can affect someone's art then I think it's time to have a revolution.

I want body parts when I fling a grenade at people. I want to be able to take a human shield, then slit their throat as blood spurts all over the place. I want realistic boobies. I might even choose realistic boobies over realistic steak. J.K.. Never happen. Realistic steak is sexier than realistic boobies.

@UniverseTwisters

How dare you spit all over the place, then rip the mailmans dogs hair out while making sweet love to it's ass in front of a live studio audience while your wife watches. ph34r.gif

You're right, that probably is the big problem that GTA has is that the more real the games look, I guess the more people will think it is real? Well the media certainly seems to think so.

Another problem is that there are stupid people who think real life is altered in any way when someone picked up GTA. Like... really stupid people. That stand up next to this idea. And some people take them seriously. I'll let you decide whose dumber in that situation, but both are the reason GTA gets held back. If there wasn't a media to overly exaggerate the violence in past GTAs, we could move along to the future with more realistic deaths, destruction, and everything in between.

Options, anyone? I'd be all for an optional profanity/gore filter, heck back in 1997-8 HL1 had optional gore (hidden under content control and it locked out MP mode if turned on), if it's an option, who is it hurting.

Now, R* has gamers all over the world, and they would have to tone some things down for some areas, no two ways around that. For instance a mission involving smoking may have to be edited for Europe to remove cigarette branding, or a mission centered around alcohol would be edited for Middle Eastern nations (though isn't GTA banned there already IIRC?),

It's all about obeying the laws of that territory, for instance if Chile banned blood depitions in media they'd release a bloodless version in that area to comply with the local laws there.

Senseless violence gets boring after a awhile. The shock value wears away after a short bit. I could careless about how many violent acts we can commit. I felt as if GTA IV burned itself out on killing. Everytime you have to leave somewhere you had to kill waves of cops to escape in some random hallway.

If the next GTA protag was a stealth guy who could avoid detection in most missions to get the job done, then I'd be happy. I want the option of being able to approach the situation in the way that I feel is best. Sometimes going crazy works, sometimes stealth and avoidance is better.
