Hey amigos.

I was really getting into some nightcore techno music, and I was thinking "someone should play this more often". And I thought: Why not me? I'm asking what it takes to start a rave, how to run a rave, and if anyone's ever been to a rave before. I know some good techno music that's "bouncy" and can make people dance and whatnot, and that's a pretty good deal in my opinion. Not a bummer at all.

Meh, when you go to your first one, it's pretty cool. After the second time it gets boring. Plus the acid at raves sucks, soz.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend them.

I've been pretty into the scene for a good three or four years now, it's kind of starting to fall apart as EDM gets more ingrained into the mainstream conscience. The vibes are still there, but it's lost most of it's substance. If you go to a rave I suggest avoiding socializing, since the vast majority of the population are essentially sh*tty teenagers looking to get f*cked up and laid. PLUR doesn't really apply anymore, there's a complete lack of respect in the scene these days, not to mention I've seen a fair few fights start at the last few I've been too, which is completely counterproductive to the first three rules.

f*ck that noise. Kick backs > that sh*t. I never cared being around a bunch of people wanting to trip out on whatever they can get a hold of so my opinion is biased. Still though, meh.

After reading some responses, now I get an idea of what you're saying. If it's a drug party, I'm sorry but I can't help you, I'm trying to stay drug free for the rest of my life, so Ehhh icon13.gificon13.gif

You are in luck, my brother was a concert promoter since the late 90's and raves were his specialty. First of all, if you want to throw them you need to decide if you are going to go the "legal" route or the "No Officers, this isn't a rave - the power went out that's why we have glow sticks".

Legal way first - You are going to need a place, DJs, and a sound system.

Place - you can simply rent a concert venue [odds are against you making money] but it includes a PRO sound system. You can rent a VFW Hall, Arcade, or something random - usually cheaper but hard to find a place that will stay open late enough. If you can find somebody who owns a factory or a car repair shop in an industrial area you can get lucky and say you'll split the profits, less risk of losing cash. You can even rent camp grounds if the owners are cool.

DJs- here's the tricky part, you need people that will draw in the crowds If you are only using locals it's way cheaper, and sometimes free. Sometimes you can convince one of the DJ's to bring their own gear, usually just the turn tables but maybe you'll get lucky and they'll have a sound system. Whether it's a pro or local AVOID going through their booking agent. My bro booked pros and they were happy to cut out the middle man.

Sound Systems - are relatively cheap now a days. You NEED subs. Renting a system can sometimes cost just as much as buying a used system. Don't rent.

Non legal way [aka "underground rave", "house party" ect] RISKY but MORE FUN.

Place- Abandon buildings seem like a good idea but most don't have power. You need to find an industrial place that has power. Recently I was at a rave that was at a unused truck station under the 90 [Chicago highway]. Oddly enough it didn't get busted. Empty Warehouses that are up for rent can be found by searching Craigslist, they usually still have electric on. Sometimes the best option is just to use a friends house, Chicago is known for house parties that are considered raves, not sure about where you live.

Sound System - The big risk is losing a sound system if you are in a place you aren't supposed to be and it gets busted.

Security

Legal venue or not, you NEED security. You're friends that look tough automatically are your new security guards. They are happy to get in for free, and who doesn't like being in a position of authority? Another perk for them is if they bust a drug dealer, they get to keep what they confiscate.

The best way to make even more money is to sell things at the rave, water and glow sticks will bring in quick cash.

You are going to need to learn about the local scene first. Is it mostly clubbers or ravers? Easiest way to find out is by going to some local clubs and meeting people who don't look happy, they are there because they can't find any good raves. If you are going to start a grass roots rave scene, that's awesome. If there is already a strong scene, just try your best to become friends with the promoters. If they like you, you can be playing shows in no time. If you have any specific questions just ask. I didn't want to get into the little things like Event Insurance, ect unless you want to know.

I dont know if I have ever been to an official rave, but I have been to some amazing house clubs in miami while on mollys. I was actually on stage with nervo for New Years Eve.

Anyways its a good time but I think it gets out of your system quick

To me - Raves are about the music. We always threw out the dealers. Drug use is just as common at normal concerts also, it's mostly just weed. But anyways, I go to shows, concerts, raves for the music.

After reading some responses, now I get an idea of what you're saying. If it's a drug party, I'm sorry but I can't help you, I'm trying to stay drug free for the rest of my life, so Ehhh

Good for you man. icon14.gif If you can have a good time without drugs, you're doing it right. It's a shame that raves are synonymous with drugs, I'm not denying that they aren't. But you can be drug free and a raver!

One other thing about throwing raves. Don't waste your money on special lighting. Most the stuff isn't pro but it costs as much as a professional rig. It just ends up looking stupid. Strobe lights and random black lights are all you need. Never waste money on lasers. Only pros have the REALLY good lasers.

^ Isn't that happy hardcore? According to urban dictionary it is, and happy hardcore is an official genre while nightcore apparently isn't (it's some sort of term).

One of them, "rainbow high in the sky" was originally a happy hardcore remix before the video maker remixed it into a nightcore mix, and then I posted it. The cool thing about nightcore is that it can be applied to almost any techno genre and make the original "jumpy", like this dubstep remix, for example:

Never been to one. Will go soon. Check out the group the Art of Psy on facebook. It's a psy trance rave though. They give you a number to call on the night to get the location.

Sounds like raves are nothing like they were in the 90s though according to a mate of mine.

I really wanna go to electric forest thats like a psychedelic festival with walks set out in the forest and trippy lights and pictures and sh*t along the way.

I've been to a fair few house parties, not any proper raves.

I wouldn't see the appeal in jumping on the spot with a group of sweaty teenagers to music I don't really like if I wasn't high or at least drunk.

Also, I don't know if it's different elsewhere but English raves now tend to play drum and bass over hardcore or anything like that.

That's the sort of thing me and my mates listen to at parties.

I love DnB as much as the next guy, but it gets overplayed by DJs trying too hard to feel like they're underground. I'll take a bit of Hardstyle or old school dank dubstep over DnB any day. Gotta' change up the tempo to keep people interested is how I see it.

Doesn't sound like much, but once you get into the mood and start dancing this sh*t makes you lose it. I taught myself a basic Melbourne shuffle just so I could dance to Hardstyle properly.

Drum N Bass is pretty cool, especially oldschool jungle with the synthesizers and old drum machines, but as far as "going back" goes, it's always gabber for me!
