South African police face inquiry over death of ma

South Africa's police watchdog has launched a murder investigation after video footage emerged showing a man being tied to the back of a police van and dragged along the road while bystanders looked on.

The death of Mido Macia, a 27-year-old taxi driver from neighbouring Mozambique, has once more focused attention on South Africa's police force, already dogged by allegations of brutality, corruption and incompetence.

In the amateur video footage (warning: contains images that some may find distressing), published by South African newspaper, the Daily Sun, Macia's hands are tied to the rear of a police van behind his head before the vehicle moves off. Less than two and a half hours later he was found dead in a local police cell, according to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). A postmortem gave the cause of death as head injuries with internal bleeding.

The video provoked outrage with President Jacob Zuma labelling it "horrific, disturbing and unacceptable. No human being should be treated in that manner."

The IPID responded by launching an inquiry and giving details of the police officers' version of events. The police account alleged that Macia assaulted an officer and took his firearm after officers asked him to move his taxi because it was obstructing traffic. They admitted only that there was a "struggle" to get the taxi driver into the police van.

Amnesty International's human rights organisation's southern Africa director, Noel Kututwa, said the incident was "the latest in an increasingly disturbing pattern of brutal police conduct in South Africa".

It comes after a series of setbacks for the South African police force, struggling to demonstrate that its low paid, reputedly poorly-trained, officers can be trusted to uphold – or even obey – the law.

Disturbing thing.Police or not-hope they will get full sentence for this.

It amazes me how half the people watching seemingly had no problem watching a guy being murdered by the police.

Having done some work in South Africa, you'd be surprised at how common things like this are. I have no qualms in saying it's probably one of the most violent societies on earth.

They certainly are. The necklacing videos from South Africa are nothing short of traumatizing.

Who were the crowd supposed to complain to?

The police?

I don't think you understand just how powerless the public are to act when the guardians of the law actively break it.

I've seen some really f*cked up videos but what I find so shocking was how many people were involved and bystanders in such a terrible act, usually in sick videos like this it's only one or two, but this was 100+ people involved.

As for the police video, I think the crowd thought they were just restraining him, they probably didn't expect them to drive off with him hanging off like that.

The Pizza Delivery Guy

So we've already got the human species, which is one of the few and far between animal groups that kill the same of their species... but now the authorities who are committed to protecting the rights of this species are the ones participating in the murders?

We're quite the species, I'll say that much.
