PS4 is Not Backward Compatible

I don't know why they don't make it backward compatible.

I don't imagine it to be such a big deal, is it?

Due to the playstation 1, 2, & 3's architectures and different hardware, it's not possible to run the older games natively. you'd have to emulate the hardware (Which takes a LOT of power) or include the older hardware in the new system, which the original ps3 did...

And it made the price jump up to $600.00

i laugh at ppl who think gta v will be coming out for ps4 first of all F* have said it is not coming out for ps4 secondly do you even how long it would take to make it compatible with gta 5 unless you want a 2014 release date which only the loyal gta fans would cope with and besides not every1 can afford a ps4 straight away like me so just deal with it and dont be to crazy when u see gta v doesn't come out for ps4

1) Rockstar have never said its 'not coming out for the PS4' They've never acknowledged the PS4's existence until last week.

2) Rockstar will have had the PS4 dev kits for a while. If the game is coming out for the PC then its as likely as not coming out for the PS4, which has pretty much the same hardware architecture.

3) I think most gamers, loyal GTA fans or not, will quite happily cope with it coming out in 2014. Especially if its optimised for the PS4 and perhaps even packed with its own unique content. It makes total economic sense at a time when the game generations over lap for them to eventually release it on as many consoles as they can. The Durango hasn't been officially announced yet but we can presume it'll be coming out on that too.

4) The instal base of the PS4 will increase much faster than it did with the PS3. The PS4 will be much more competitively priced. Sony have all but admitted so.

Why did they change the architechture?

Microsoft didn't, did they?

Because almost all devs hated making games for the PS3's insane architechture.

This way, more devs will be willing to make PS4 games, and making PS4 games will be faster than if they were using batsh*t crazy architecture similar to PS3, and there's a greater likelihood for more and better ports to and from PS4.

It's about more advanced technologies and efficiency.

each sony system had processors with different architectures.

PS1. SPC-700

PS2. "Emotion Engine"

PS3. "Cell Processor" (Similar to a PowerPC based chip)

PS4. X86 (the same one used in your PC)

Microsoft has always used X86 based processors in their XBox consoles because the original XBox was designed to show off microsoft's "Direct X" rendering tech.

I see no problem with them making a PS4 version of GTA V. If its architecture is that much like PC as the PS4 developer was saying, then they'll probably release it on PC and PS4 later down the line with the initial current gen console released first. They don't have to admit to us that they're working on sh*t. It's their project, they can do what they want without telling us.

Because first of all, why would they use the same architecture constantly in their future consoles. Secondly, i don't think you know that the PS3's architecture was a nightmare. So they've got a better and more simple one now which can EASILY port games from PC's and from previous consoles. Except backwards compatibility isn't back but you can still use old games through gaikai.

So you say that Sony should have put similar architecture in PS4 just so you could play PS3 games on PS4?

PS4 is made for PS4 games.

PS3's architecture is very complicated. PS4's x86 is very wise choice from Sony.

Sony made mistake with putting such complicated architecture in PS3 and now they are fixing it for PS4.

Microsoft has always used x86 based processors in their XBox consoles ...

Incorrect, I'm afraid.

Xbox original had an x86 processor (a custom version of the Intel Pentium III to be precise).

Xbox360 has a 3 core PowerPC Xenon processor which uses a Power Architecture (RISC) instruction set, not an x86 instruction set.

Exactly. So in fairness, even xbox doesn't have backwards compatibility even though the original did.

Alright, my bad. Xbox 360 did have software emulation for backwards compatibility, though,

id be amazed if GTA V isnt on PS4 aswell as PS3

I honestly don't think it's that easy to just port a game like this over to next-gen right away. Then again...Ubi IS doing that with Watch_Dogs.

Seeing as how the PS4 is easier to develop for than the PS3, and GTAV is going to be on the 360, there is no reason to believe it would be hard to put on the PS4.

I won't be getting a PS4 until GTA6. So I don't have to worry.

i recon they'll be a downloadable version [ported] in either 2014 or 2015.

Or buy a PC and suddenly you have "backwards compatibility" with all consoles (until the gen before) lol.gif

Me too and it can't run some games for me.It can run Prototype but it can't run FIFA 13.

It's known to have problems with games anyway.

Nevermind with a PC you are able to install a second OS on another hard drive (I mean hds are really cheap now 2TB for ~60 Euro) and will be able to play every game of the previous PC "generation".

If you're going to use an operating for gaming it is best to use windows 7 man to be honest. This is one of the reasons why I never spent so much money on that operating system because of all the negative rumors, complaints and etc.

I'm disappointed about the backwards compatability issue, but it might be the push i need to swith to xbox. It removes the incentive for me to buy another Sony. I have a Windows Phone 8 now, with inbuilt apps for xbox games that may become useful in the future if i switch and become part of the M$ ecosystem.
