PS4 is Not Backward Compatible

It's not backwards compatible natively but you can still stream your PS3 games on PS4, but this time you need to buy the games again on PSN store on PS4 hoping it will be cheaper.

Hang on, I just thought of something.

If the PS4 is using an x86 processor, wouldn't that mean it would be "almost" like porting it to PC?

If the PC port of GTAV comes 8-10 months after the PS3-360 release, could they not be working on a PS4 / PC port concurrently? I figure that most of the early work would be similar if not the same.

Yes. The x86 processor helps easier ports from PC/to PC and in good quality too. But we don't know if rockstar are doing that or not till they confirm/deny it.

V will come out on both current gen and next gen... Isn't it obvious?

While I highly, HIGHLY, doubt it, I do think it's possible for a port on next gen system a few years down the road. For now, I'd rather have it on consoles; putting it on next gen systems only is a slap to the face.

True, Just speculation, but that's all we've got until R* decide to leave the house again.

We need to wait till E3, which is gonna be the biggest and best event of all the E3's yet. Plus they will show the actual PS4 since it is even closer to the launch date and we are going to see all the major gaming companies too. Rockstar are even on the dev list....

This means that R* will need to port GTA V to the PlayStation 4. It's as simple as that since PS3 games will not work on the PS4. Also don't expect a PS4 version so soon, I mean the PC version hasn't been announced yet and you people are talking about the next gen release already.

f*ck the PS4 if it's not backwards compatible, I've spent too much money on the PS3.

So wait, you sell your old systems when the new ones come out? Why?

Would not be surprised if this console is Sony's death grave. They already have a negative cashflow and all their hope is in this console, but it is getting more and more unattractive the more informations are revealed about it.

Agreed. They've been in the sh*tter since the PS3 launch. Launching the Vita was a HORRIBLE idea. Plus, stock prices fell pretty quickly after the conference, but to be fair, that happened when they announced the 3DS, Wii U and Vita. They say the Wii U is Nintendo's "Dreamcast" , I say the PS4 is Sony's "Wii U".

People here are just hating on sony for no reason. Half of them are obviously PC and 360 fanboys. Watch when E3 arrives, this meeting was ONLY a teaser, the real deal is E3. Then half of these big headed fans will start ass licking them.

1. PS3 is backwards compatible through some streaming service called "Gaikai".

2. GTA V will be on 360 and PS3, R* confirmed it recently in the comments section on the NewsWire after someone asked about a PS4 version.

You're not wrong. In fact if the rumours are true, the next XBox will also be going the x86-64 processor route. If so, both consoles and the PC will all have near identical architectures. Only the O/S's and the finer details of the specifications (e.g. RAM) will separate them.

Also, just a word to those that say the PS4 is looking less than desirable. What Sony have done is to make a new console to a price. They are trying to avoid all the problems they had when the PS3 was first launched: i.e. it was late, far too expensive, uptake was slow and it's unique architecture was allegedly difficult to develop for. Sony had to make significant extra investment to cut the cost of the PS3 (part of which meant it lost it's PS2 backward compatibility) so that it could be sold at a better price.

The new PS4 addresses many of these issues. Yes, it does look a lot like a glorified PC, and they have admitted as such. The components are almost off-the-shelf so it's simple to build, likely to be reliable, and easy to develop for. But as a result direct backward compatibility has had to be sacrificed.

As far as GTA:V goes, obviously Rockstar is keeping any possible platform releases other than have already be announced to themselves. But if they are intending to develop GTA:V for PC, which would be unusual if they didn't, then it might not be too much of an extra leap to take it to the next gen consoles. It's just a question of whether they would make a return by doing so.

If PS4 and/or neXtBox see high initial sales, they may consider it.

Yes, all PS3 games can be streamed through Gaikai to play them on the PS4. It will not accept them as discs. Apparently it has something to do with the new architecture ditching that horrendous Cell processor that was such a headache for developers.

And I thought I'd share this with everyone while I'm here.

So all this talking of a next gen version is only because people want to play the game on a disk and not stream it off the service? It will be very hard for people to stream games to play on the PS4 where I'm from and I can imagine why people want a next gen version. But as I already said before if GTA V does get a non streamed next gen version you guys will have to wait I'm guessing even after the PC version is released.

Yeah i agree. If Sony provide them with all the things the fans want, the fans will still not be satisfied. f*ck the fake fanbase, i bet they are going to ass lick them in E3 now, just watch.

Oh well. Not gonna buy a new console until some interesting games are on it.

As for GTA V coming to PS4, it's definitley not going to be anytime soon. If anything, they'll do a port a couple years down the road, kind of like what they did with Bully.

I'm a PC user. I'm not hating on Sony at all. In fact I think the direction the PS4 has gone is great because I think there's a good chance it will indirectly benefit the PC platform. And if the rumours are true that the neXtBox will also feature an x86-64 processor architecture then that will be even better.

All three platforms could end up so similar that porting costs will be vastly reduced and we could all see a wider range of titles on all three.

It depends. How far ahead were gaming PCs to the Xbox 360 in 2005? Was 512MB of RAM relevant to PC gaming at that time? That could be a good indicator as to when the next gen consoles will start falling behind PCs again.

Why do you idiots keep comparing PC to consoles? They are completely different things and are desinged differently. PC is high tech multi-tasking platform designed to do loads of things in one go while consoles are strictly for gaming ONLY and just a few social things added, thats all.

So basically, it will be a matter of compiling the game for each platform, then testing.

Technically, almost, but not quite.

The three platforms will have low level hardware differences and different O/S's. The operating systems on the consoles is likely to be leaner. Also, because the consoles are rigidly defined hardware platforms, there is more scope to code 'on the metal' (within the vendors' allowable limits) whereas on PC software always has to work through DirectX and through hardware drivers.

So there are some significant differences at the lowest level. They would have to rewrite some sections of code to suit each platform, especially those concerned with graphics and such. Many other hardware differences would have to be taken into account.

But it will still be a good deal easier than trying to write for three entirely different architectures as is the case now.

If PS4 was compatible, people could keep their PS3 games and sell their PS3s to save for the PS4, so more people could afford the PS4. Sony failed there for the 2nd time in a row, and we're literally going to pay for they fail.

We?

Why we? Just don't buy it otherwise it's your fault for supporting their idiotic system.

1. I'm not an idiot.

2. I'm asking a perfectly valid question.

It matters because a lot of people do, in fact, buy PCs to play games. It would be nice if, for a while, the consoles and PCs were in the same ballpark of horsepower because PC gamers have had to put up with half-assed ports. I'm not a fanboy, hell, I don't even have a PC.

From what I hear, the architecture of these new consoles are more in-line with what you'd see on a decent gaming rig, so that's good news.

id be amazed if GTA V isnt on PS4 aswell as PS3

I honestly don't think it's that easy to just port a game like this over to next-gen right away. Then again...Ubi IS doing that with Watch_Dogs.

Since the PS4 is pretty much a streamlined PC(x86 architecture and 8 gigs GDDR5 RAM), it should be a piece of cake.

And during the announcement of all the publishers and developers supporting the PS4, R*'s logo was right there on the middle right. So they obviously already have at least one game planned to launch on the PS4, which is probably Agent. If they don't do GTA V I wouldn't mind, but at this point in time it's almost stupid not to. But considering Watch_Dogs is gonna be a launch title for the PS4, R* probably wouldn't want that much competition(Even though they don't normally have competition) on a new generation of console right out the bat. Let people buy the console, buy Watch_Dogs and play it to death, and release an enhanced port of GTA V in the Spring.

@GTAfan786: Because consoles are PC's. Just streamlined(before Sony removed Linux, the PS3 was essentially a full blown PC, although with some bad hardware). And because the PS4 is using x86 architecture, it's not wrong to call it a PC.
