PsychoPi3
Hi, I apologise that my first post on this forum is asking for help, but I've been looking at buying a gaming desktop and I was wondering if this build here would be able to run GTA IV with high settings? If not, what should I change? I have a budget of around £600, so would I be better off building my own computer? If so, what components would you recommend? I apologise for all the questions, I've never bought a gaming PC before. Thanks in advance for any help.
yoječ
You'd be far better off building your own PC. The one you posted is just plain rubbish - no one right in his head would recommend a gaming rig with GT620 on board. Plus, this PC doesn't include a proper PSU - just a noname one. Having that in mind, I'd call it pretty darn expensive. It's just a perfect example of a rig that you should avoid. This is what I'd recommend: £177,78 Intel Core i5 3570K Quad Core IvyBridge Processor Retail with Heat Sink Fan http://www.scan.co.uk/products/29-4intel-c...mart-cache-34x- £128,14 MSI Overclocked Radeon HD 7850 OC AMD Graphics Card - 1GB Overclocked http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-msi-rad...scrossfire-offe £99,32 ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Performance Intel Z77 Socket 1155 Motherboard http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asrock-fata...0-d-sub-dvi-hdm £54,95 Seagate 1TB SATA 3 Performance Hard Drive OEM ST1000DM003 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-seagate...che-8ms-ncq-oem £39,36 Corsair Memory Vengeance Jet Black 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9-9-9-24 XMP Dual Channel Desktop http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-corsair...cas-9-9-9-24-xm £48,66 XFX Pro Series Core Edition P1-550S-UKB9 550W Power Supply (PSU) http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-xfx-pr...-12v-fan-atx-v2 £15,86 Pioneer DVR-220BK 24x DVD±R, 12x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, RAM x12, SATA, Black, OEM http://www.scan.co.uk/products/pioneer-dvr...-sata-black-oem £45,60 Lian Li PC-K58B Lancool Dragon Lord K Series Mid Tower Gaming Case w/o PSU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lian-li-pc-...ng-case-w-o-psu = £609,67 Compared to the rig from Cyberpower, this one has a far better graphics card (there's literally no comparison between these two), better motherboard, proper PSU, better case. It should be noted that you can overclock the CPU in this rig in the future - you'd just have buy a better CPU cooler and you're ready. But, if you will never ever overclock the CPU, then I'd recommend this rig: £148,98 Intel CPU Core i5 3470 Quad Core Processor - Retail http://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-core-...he-32x-ratio-77 £185,74 ScanFX Black Edition Radeon HD 7870 AMD Graphics Card - 2GB http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-scanfx-...-dl-dvi-i-2x-md £57,30 MSI B75A-G43 Intel B75 Socket 1155 Motherboard http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-b75a-g4...-dvi-d-hdmi-atx £54,95 Seagate 1TB SATA 3 Performance Hard Drive OEM ST1000DM003 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-seagate...che-8ms-ncq-oem £39,36 Corsair Memory Vengeance Jet Black 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9-9-9-24 XMP Dual Channel Desktop http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-corsair...cas-9-9-9-24-xm £48,66 XFX Pro Series Core Edition P1-550S-UKB9 550W Power Supply (PSU) http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-xfx-pr...-12v-fan-atx-v2 £15,86 Pioneer DVR-220BK 24x DVD±R, 12x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, RAM x12, SATA, Black, OEM http://www.scan.co.uk/products/pioneer-dvr...-sata-black-oem £45,60 Lian Li PC-K58B Lancool Dragon Lord K Series Mid Tower Gaming Case w/o PSU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lian-li-pc-...ng-case-w-o-psu = £596,45 i5-3470 has much worse OC capabilities than i5-3570k, and also this mobo doesn't allow overclocking at all. On the other hand these parts were cheaper, which means I could put a faster graphics card in here: HD7870 XT, which is barely slower than HD7950. PsychoPi3
Since I've never overclocked anything before (as you can probably tell from that statement ) I'm not really sure what it is, so would I be better off getting the second setup you suggested or would the first setup be better just in case I ever decide to overclock? If I was to decide not to overclock, which setup would provide a better performance for GTA IV (and other high-end games) at high graphics settings? Thanks for your help so far and thanks in advance for any more help you can provide.
yoječ
Without overclocking, the second rig is definitely better. But, with OC you can increase the frequency of the CPU even by as much as 1GHz - and that's definitely gonna make a difference.
friendly luggage
I find overclocking an i5 for gaming pretty pointless as I only seem to get a frame or two increase in FPS from doing it with my i5 2500k. As long as you have a decent CPU, the limiting part of the system will be the graphics card and RAM. I would suggest going for yojo's second build. EDIT I suppose it depends on the game but a stock i5 is plenty fast.
yoječ
I can agree with that, there is not much point in overclocking the i5 right now. But, the fact that you can overclock it makes it more futureproof IMHO.
Finn 7 five 11
Just to add some weight, that build you linked is a steaming pile of sh*t in terms of gaming. Yoyo's Second build would be great if you're never going to OC.
PsychoPi3
Okay thanks everyone, I'll probably go with the second build as I don't think I'll have any plans of overclocking in the future. I forgot to take the monitor, keyboard and mouse into account when calculating my budget, so I'll have to save more money before purchasing anything Thanks again for the help. PsychoPi3
I know I said I decided to get the second build but just out of curiosity, is this PC any good? Here Thanks.
yoječ
Not really. It's quite terrible actually, it costs far more than it's worth. For example, HD7870 XT is on average about ten times as fast as the HD6450... the CPU is subpar as well. Edited February 22, 2013 by yojo2

PsychoPi3
Sorry for bumping this thread again, but would I be alright replacing: Corsair Memory Vengeance Jet Black 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz CAS 9-9-9-24 XMP Dual Channel Desktop (£39.36) Link here with: Corsair Memory Vengeance Jet Black 8GB DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600) CAS9-9-9-24 XMP Dual Channel Desktop (£47.76) Link here I realise the second product is more expensive, but the first one is out of stock and I can't find it on sale anywhere else. Thanks.

PsychoPi3
Which one? There's 55 different ones on that link Edit: my post isn't supposed to sound sarcastic or anything, I just didn't want to only say 'which one' as I thought you may have assumed I didn't see your link Edited February 28, 2013 by PsychoPi3
