This may include other supporting characters, as well; I don't think the "friend dating" system from GTA IV has been removed entirely, just altered and made less intrusive. Now, there's some stuff we don't know about this, like whether or not this is context sensitive (like if you can only call them to do an activity with them, or if you can call them over at any time). R* have said in this regard that basically, when playing as one protagonist, the other two protagonists are basically the main people you hang out with.
