with missions that feature 2 or all 3 protags, are you forced to switch at certain points, or is it all optional

They say you couldn't play the whole game without switching so I guess we're going to be forced to switch sometimes.

I believe it has been stated in the various previews and interviews that you would be forced to switch protagonists at certain points in certain missions. When not on a mission, however, you would be able to play as whoever protagonist you want to.

In some missions, yes, we will be forced to switch characters at certain points.

It was confirmed in the latest interview, that you can play through the entire game as one character, e.g. the switching will be encouraged but not enforced.

ADDED

Although I failed to find a quote to support my above statement. I swear I saw it somewhere, but can't remember where.

This is great news if true! Being forced to switch characters just doesn't sounds cool for me, at least I want freedom to play through the game my own way.

Wouldn't it kind of ruin the whole concept of R* if you could just play with one player all game?

I mean they are investing tons of time into this feature, it would be silly to not force gamers to at least switch them once.

It's been discussed in other threads before that one of the characters might end up in jail or something during the story and you'll have to free him. If something like this is in the game then it could be that your favorite character will eventually be unavailable, unless the story is so dynamic that it will depend on the player you are playing the most.

But as far as I know R* they usually have a pretty static mission design.

I find it hard to believe we can play through the whole story with just one protagonist especially if there are story arcs like R* suggest. I mean wouldn't we be only getting 1/3rd of the experience?

I think you'll find it's going to work largely like GTA IV/EFLC. When the protagonists aren't working together they'll have their own missions. There has to be some degree of forced switching otherwise it defeats the purpose of multiple protagonists to begin with.,

I'm guessing depending on who you switch to they'll have their own mission strands you must do before they get together for a heist or something.

It seems silly to think R* would go to all the effort making this mechanic if you could just play through with one of them.

I'm pretty sure they stated the changes are forced most the time.. which I found odd.

They said they wanted to iron out the boring bits, allowing you to change to whatever set of action you wanna play in- but the switching in the heli flying, franklin sniping and Michael repelling bit was all done either by force or an icon comes up telling you to switch.

I'm sure it will work, but I wanted it to be where where I could switch to anyone whenever I want during the missions.

Say Franklin's sent off to retrieve some item and while Trevor and Michael get ambushed and are put into a firefight while waiting for him. Now say I simply just don't feel like doing a gunfight and instead just wanna cruz through the countryside as Franklin to retrieve that package instead, we should have the freedom to do so. Sometimes I enjoy the calm, drawn out missions, and if they're implementing this style of gameplay they most definitely should let me pick if I wanna do the more 'boring' tasks as well rather than always being forced into the highest amount of action there is.

R* did confirm that in some of the missions that do have the 3 protags, we will be forced to switch characters. That is only for that mission though. Free roam will truly be free.

Forced switching is some BS IMHO.

I felt as if R* attempted to hold my hand through the story in IV with the overly cinematic feel that limited my choices (limited weapons, car chases on the rails, lack of customization, etc.). I think V will be great since R* will solve the replay value problems from IV; but R* is really scaring me with the forced switching and the in-mission musical score stuff. It seems as if they haven't learned their lessons in that respect. R* should just make a movie ffs and get it out of their systems. lol.gif

It probably depends. It doesn't mean that every single time a switch moment comes up that we will have to switch. Basically, during some missions involving multiple protagonists (and it seems to me that this might actually comprise the majority of missions, especially by the end), there will be times when you are prompted to switch. However, you will usually have a choice as to who you switch to, but there may be times when one character is simply put out of the picture for the time being and you have no choice but to play as one of the other two characters, or just the other available character if there's only 2 involved. So basically no one method is going to be taken throughout the entire game. In fact, in the GI article, I believe they mentioned that they wanted to do it this way for variety's sake: sometimes you can choose completely, sometimes the choices are limited, and sometimes you have no choice at all, so no one mission is handled exactly the same way as the previous.

And of course, in missions involving one or two protagonists, it might not involve one of the ones you're playing currently in free-roam, so you will not have the option to start that mission as that character. And each character's story is intertwined, so one person's mission will be necessary to advance the overall story arc, meaning you'll have to switch to them.

That all said, there's still a lot more choice involved than we've ever had before in GTA. While you will have to switch sometimes, many times even, much of the time it's still up to you who you switch to, and many times you can choose to remain as the character you're playing as, rather than switching (as illustrated in the mission described in the GI article). And The Benz has also gone on record stating that the missions in GTA V are more free-form than ever before. So while a certain degree of forced switching may seem to contradict this, the fact that there are multiple protagonists and we will often have a choice to switch already gives us more options and replay value than we've had before.

Too bad it's not your game so if they want to do it in their own way they will do it, no amount of bitching it's going to change that . I swear the entitlement of some fans is really annoying on this forum !

Agreed. I guess the people who don't like the idea of forced switching better not buy it because it will be imposed like it or not. R* haven't wasted time and resources on this mechanic for people to tippy toe around it. confused.gif

this sucks.

this and no propriety buying...

I really dont see what the fuss is about buying property, it adds nothing to the game experience. Also dont forget there is a chance we can rent places.

Some points in the missions we will be forced but a lot of the time we can chose what perspective we play the mission from.

Honestly, I don't mind switching to different characters, as long as it doesn't happen too often during missions.

You are able to choose most of the time, however you are forced to switch in certain missions. That's actually good since you would know all protagonists, at least to a certain extent after you've finished the game the first time.

In that extraction mission we read about, they seem to imply you can switch at certain points in the mission. You can either stay as Michael in the room with the FIB and the hostage or switch to Franklin who's snipes from afar, or Trevor in the chopper.

My guess is that these switches will be 'optional' but the success of the mission may depend on who you've switched to, for example Franklin AI sniper fire may not be as swift and accurate as our own and it could lead to complication or even failure. So although the switch isn't mandatory, you may not do so well or even complete the game without taking advantage of it.

All pure speculation of course at this point. it could be that some are mandatory. I'd like to know if one of the protagonist dies and gets cremated for example will we be able to switch to his burial urn sitting in the bedroom of his mansion just watching the other protags get friendly with his bitch wife, then switch back to them just as it gets interesting. I need to design my own game I think.

I think you didn't understand what was said... they meant you'll have to switch to start certain missions, not in the middle of them. It wouldn't make sense, for example, being unable to switch if the other protagonist is still there. But it wouldn't make sense if, for example, you started a mission with Franklin, however he isn't seen in this mission, which the goal has nothing to do with his story arc.

Read the previews..... You don't have to switch characters. It's the same thing like playing in free roam and not heading to a mission location. All you have to do is switch to a different character and head to the mission location... Is that really forced when it's the same thing you normally do to continue the story?

It's not good. I want to play and enjoy the game, meaning I'd rather do driving and racing and skip all the shooting bits, even if it ends up with me not understanding the storyline.

It would be good if R* adviced you which character to switch to experience the game at it's best, but forcing us to do so is rather annoying.

Why are some people being so sentimental? It's NOT in ALL missions where you are forced, just SOME because obviously they have a connection so you should have expected that. People who are complaining are ignorant c*nts who don't appreciate what rockstar make. FFS, you need to grow up.
