Combat and Grappling system like Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping dogs might bot be a perfect game, but the combat system is one of the best ive seen and more enjoyable than any beat em up game to me.

The only problem with this is that only trevor is able to have skills in combat arts. Thats one poblem i have with this 3 protagon system. Some features are getting disqualified by the personality of one ore two of the protagonists. And building a combat system for only one of the guys seems to be unrealisitc for R* to do.

Another thing is the gappling system/hostile mode in sleeping dogs. You can take an enemy by pressing B. Then u can run with them by pressing the sprint button and when u equip your weapon u are using him as shield.

But as it seems we wont get any new features like these. Except blowing up cars with canister and zippo. At least the guy from Gamekings who was at the demo said that he didnt saw such things. And if there would have been any R* would have used them in the demo tbh...

Tha makes me worry again. There so many possibilities and suggestions from the community and it seems like they dont listen to such things.

Ofcourse there can be new things. But i think they would have announced it during the demo and Gameinformer and other mags would have wrote about it

I agree sleeping dogs terrible game but the best combat system in any sandbox game I have ever played and it's enjoyable. They said the people who did the combat for the batman games did the combat for sleeping dogs.

Yeah, they also worked with MMA fighter like GSP make the moves real.

The counter system works just awesome and overal its very fluid and smooth. The controlls in general are smooth. I think in GTA4 or RDR u wouldnt even be able to fight like this because they both feel a bit sluggish. RDR less than GTA4 but far from being accurate and fluid

How does "Might not be perfect" equal terrible?

Anyways, yeah, I think a sleeping dogs combat system would be good for V. At the very least, it would be more involving than "Hold trigger, mash B".

It wasn't that good seriously. It got old fast. I was bored of it in the demo.

Gta v can be more enjoyable.

I loved sleeping dogs. combat system and game. would love if they could implement the enviromental melee attacks into GTA. I think sleeping dogs lays the foundation for an almost perfect combat system to come in future games.

Sleeping Dogs was fun at the time but I have no desire to go back for more.

To OP, you seem to be making a lot of assumptions The only problem with this is that only trevor is able to have skills in combat arts. Why, because he's the only one that's been in the army?

I was going to carry on quoting bits of your post but you seem to know everything, so I'll just leave now.

I'd honestly want something similar to the Uncharted games. IMO it's more fluid than in Sleeping Dogs.

By the looks of the 2nd trailer, where Trevor is spanking the poor guy on the floor ... the combat will be the same as in GTAIV, which is a pity. Looks like they have their arms and legs stuck, very static and boring ... better shot them.

Agreed.

I loved the melee in Sleeping Dogs.

However, What is this "gappling" you talk of? Is this a new term?

I'm assuming it's a typo. It should be "grappling". I'll fix the thread title for him. smile.gif

Thx at miamyvicecity.

@ topic

Such a system would make a fight club activity just awesome. It would almost feel like a beating up game in gta. In Sleeping Dogs u are able tongo to dojos and learn new move ny practising them with students.

For GTA5 i want atnleast a proper counter system. The one from gta4 felt very clunky and a bit plain. I mean fighting in real life has more dynamic than in GTA4

I dont really like the "enemy is marked when they're about to attack, counter, and then mash buttons" unarmed combat system

I loved how chunky and slow it was in IV. It was difficult, and thats what made it fun.

Yeah. Whenever I get into a fight with more than one ped in GTA IV I feel like a badass when I defeat them.

Idc how many times I've done it, a baseball bat straight to the dome never gets old. 1 hit ko's are just epic with euphoria.

I dont get why people want to stay at the old bad stuff...

They dont want better precise movement and improved camera....

They dont want a better weapon switching system and want to stay with the slow and undynamic dpad switching instead of a wheel

Now they want to stay at the plain melee system instead of having a complex dynamic one....

Sry but some of you sound like elders who saying "everything was better in the past" all the time...

I bet the same guys wanted to stay at 2D for GTA3 instead of having 3D... Frightend of changes... Thats just sad...

It's not that we're afraid of change, its just that a bunch of games have used the exact same combat system as used in Sleeping Dogs.

GTA IV had it's own personal individual melee system, it made it feel a lot more real and fun. Especially when you actually dont know if you're going to win or not.

It'd take throwing actual punches and trying hard to block and counter over flying kicks and fancy spinning punches anyday

You mean like all those people who bashed GTA IV for being too "realistic"? Frightened of changes alright. tounge.gif

Seriously though I don't think it's so much people don't want things improved or changed. You have to remember that being a discussion forum not every idea you throw out will get everyone in agreeance. I would love to see the melee combat improved, but I don't see the need for what was in Sleeping Dogs in GTA V.

I'd much prefer something similar to Uncharted's as I said before. smile.gif

Thats like calling boxing better than MMA....

Just because its slow in GTA4 doesnt make faster systems with spinning wheels and kicks unrealistic...

I rather want a complex system where a can better and are unbestable at some point instead of a system where u never know if u win or loose and might loose your unsaved progress....

U should be awarded for fighting often and thats defenitly not the case in GTA4. And thats not just saying, in GTA4 it seems like the counter system makes what it wants. U can press the counter button at the right time sometimes but niko does nothing. And when u countered and attack and want to make these finishing move it sometimes doesnt react.

The system in 4 makes it job but is far from being something u want to do over and over and being statisfied cause even when u win against 2 or more it was luck rather than skill

I didn't say unrealistic.

I just meant that IV has it's own individual melee system, developed on its own and not a system adopted from another game.

I mean if you get good enough at it, you can pretty much win any fight. And that's the great part of it, you improve.

Combat is a big plus in Sleeping Dogs. It keeps the short game alive. But the same in GTA 5 won't happen. Firstly, the GI cover story already says the main focus will never be on melee combat. Well, never as much as shooting.

And it also says the melee combat got improved. GTA 4's was alright so if it got improved, it will be good enough I think.

Although I have to admit that the two guys fighting in Trailer 2 (right infront of the bar in Blaine county, where the car passes by) look odd. It looks like in GTA 4, a bit odd. Like I said, Combat in GTA 4 was okay but when people entered the fist fight their bodies looked somehwat odd. Sleeping Dogs looks much more fluid.

Then again, Michael, Trevor or Franklin pulling some Kung Fu moves?! Forget about it. It wouldn't look odd, but totally idiotic.

I'm not sure if I want Arkham Asylum/Sleeping Dogs fighting system in yet another game. Sure, that system works, but why squeeze it in every single game? I'd rather want R* to develop something on their own, something original that would suit V. Batman and (I assume) that guy from Sleeping Dogs are martial arts masters, so it makes sense for them to have a fluid, fast melee system. I doubt any of V's protagonists are (canonically) even as skilled in combat as Niko. IV's system was clunky, sure, but it suited the game. GTA protagonists really shouldn't jump around like crazy and perform crazy counter-kills.

Its more about having a fluid system whete u can counter proper.

So it makes a possible returning Fightclub activity more enjoyable.

Idk about our boys fighting Kung fu style (although it was funny as f*ck in SA when you learned that skill in San Fierro lol) but I would like it better if you had a grappling fighting style like in Bully (if it wasn't for the FFFIIZZUCKED Up controls on the PC version)

L2=Lock on

L2+right analouge stick=aim(pick bodypart)

L2+square=Kick

L2+circle=punch

L2+triangle=grapple

L2+x(tap)=douge

L2+x(hold)=block

L2+directonal button=taunt

L2+L1+x, square or triangle=finisher

L2+triangle, then triangle=enviro takedown

L2+triangle, then square=leg grapple attack

L2+triangle, then circle=hand grapple attack

L2+triangle+left analouge stick=move opponent arround

Standing(normal):circle is for punching, square is for kicking, triangle is for grappling, left analouge stick for using differnt types of hits(uses most compass directions(ie. North, north east, east, south east, south, south west, west, north west and north) and the right analouge stick is for picking body parts/areas to attack

Grapple: use circle for punching, square for kicking/kneeing and triangle for an enviro takedown(worls anywhere(eg. Floor, wall, car, pole, other ped, etc.). Just as normal fighting the left analouge stick is for differnt strikes while the right stick is for picking body parts even with enviro takedowns.

Dodging/blocking: after you dodge you can counter and depending at where you are aiming and what direction the left analouge stick is pointed in you will do a combo. Each one is different depending on what was dodged, which way the L stick was facing and where you were aiming.

Blocking is differnt and less complex. Simple block in the direction of the attack to avoid loosing health then strike while your opponent gets ready to hit again.

Downed(normal/grapple):you can attack a downed opponet similarly to as if they are standing. Aim at the body part and choose how to hit it. The same principle goses for graples exept you can pull them/carry them where ever you want to go(tap triangle to do an enviro tackedown or hold it if you want to carry or drag them.) If you press triangle while aiming at the body then you carry them if its the lims then you drag them.

NOTE: all weapons have differnt moves.

That's what I want as a combat system . Seems complex I know but its SOO simple and easy to learn if you just read the above

So what you guys think
