i made a steam account a few months ago but i haven't got any games i was thinking about finally getting Garry's mod but i have read that you need other steam games, however my friend told me that if you buy it on steam you don't need any other games and it already comes with all the half life stuff . Is this true as i don't want to spend money on games that i already own (got the orange box on xbox) so will gmod work on it's own?

Certain textures aren't going to show up if you don't get the other games. I know from personal experience. However the core game will still work, it just won't have many textures.

Most likely the other Valve games, I bought the entire Valve pack during the winter sales so I'm afraid the problem you're having is unknown to me.

 

I'd suggest getting Team Fortress 2 (as that's completely free) and of course Left 4 Dead 2, I'm unsure if the original game actually has any inbuilt content in the game. Nevertheless, a Google search probably wouldn't go a miss in this situation and if you're still not getting the textures to pop in after that then I'd suggest contacting Steam Support.

 

Other than that there's not a lot we can we really do to help, I'm guessing that if it's not a problem with the fact that you're trying to render content that's not currently in the game it may be something to do with your graphics card having a few hiccups, as unlikely as it sounds it's happened to me before (never in Garry's Mod but still) so I'd suggest getting that checked out if getting the other Valve games doesn't work.

 

And finally, I hate to this by the way but there is a topic dedicated to Garry's Mod discussion though it is a little old you're most likely going to get more informed opinions by posting in there rather than making a separate thread.
