Less scripted missions

As much as I liked GTA IV I wish there was more freedom in how you can complete missions. One good idea I think in GTA V would be if for example you had to break somebody out of prison you can quietly sneak them out or you can go in guns blazing. The same thing with heists. If you had to steal a rare jewel from a museum you could go during the day and take it while hoping to outrun the cops or you can sneak in at night and use some stealth tactics to take it and be gone before anybody notices a thing.

Yeah I agree, I'm tired of my hand being held all the way, having no freedom to do things my way.

It's being discussed in my poll here, the example I gave was being able to find a kidnapped character almost independently. I hope that their "bold new direction" means that they let us play the game independently for once. It's getting old the whole, "go here," "fly there," "do this" thing. Obviously it's still necessary at times but not ALL the time.

Perhaps they are trying to incorporate the "dynamic" aspect of the missions in there this time? I never played RDR (I know wtf is wrong with me) but watching a few videos of the dynamic events really amkes you wonder what R* are capable of. I believe this game will have more of a "cause and effect" aspect than IV.

The Benz has already addressed this in an interview. He said there will be many more freeform missions, which were sorely lacking in IV/EFLC.

“We do have a bunch of missions in GTA V that are far more freeform than anything we have done before,” he continues. “We tell you to go get something and the player decides how to do it - what characters they need on the job and what tools they need for those characters.”

I can't believe I missed that interview. I'm glad they finally recognize the importance of more freedom in a game like GTA. Thanks for the link. icon14.gif

Off topic: go read the comments on the page stemming from the "I can't wait to play this game naked" comment down to the "dumb ass" fight. Hilarity lol.gif

The quote is also pretty awesome. It's from the same interview...

“Players are always finding ways of tackling missions that we hadn't considered and we don't want to restrict that. If a solution feels like it should work the player should be able to try it - we don't want to restrict creativity."

That would be a good idea. It would add a lot to the gameplay if there are multiple possibilities of how you are going to do a mission. A system like this will definitely appear in GTA V, alone because it has multiple protagonists but the question would be then in how many ways you could do a mission with each protagonist? If Rockstar thought about that and they manage it to give us more room for our own decisions then this would work out pretty well in combination with the multiple protagonists.

The one thing that bugs me is why didn't that interviewer think to ask about stealth? When The Benz said what he said about more freedom and creativity, it's the first thing I thought about.

I think they will be even more scripted than before, because otherwise it would not fit to be playable with all 3 characaters. Only if they let the player decide what to do, there have to be 2 versions for one character, 4 versions for 2 characters and 6 versions for 3 characters. That'd be too much work.

The only way it could be is if it's a "one-character" mission, but even that would probably not effect the storyline that much.

"versions" aren't the same thing as freedom, even though I get your point. We're not talking about picking an option within the storyline.

This is more about "how" you choose to do "what" the different missions ask you to do in GTA V. This isn't something R* needs to work hard to allow. In fact, in some cases it's more work to disallow creativity. The main issue would be AI.

The three character aspect shouldn't be a problem either, because you only control one character at a time, so it's really not too different from what we've seen in past GTAs when you're with one or two other guys.
