Depends on what type of genre of game.

 

RPG: Must have really

Adventure: Can be cool but a linear one isn't bad either.

Horror type or heavy story based game: Linear is probably the better choice to depict the story better but again open-world could be interesting.

Racer: Test Drive Unlimited showed an open-world racer was pretty sweet.

 

and it goes on, but yeah having it open world definitely seems lot cooler for any type of game.

Both really, Sometimes I feel like playing a solid-linear game, other times I feel like f*cking around in an open-world enviroment.

It's kind of like when somebody puts you in a narrow hallway, and then that person constantly pokes you in the back with a stick (the "adventure" is on "rails").

 

There are plenty of good linear games, but just about none of them offer the replay value of a good open world game. Since this is GTAForums, you can expect the people here to prefer open world gameplay overall.

Linear - I'm a massive fan of id software's games and other run and gun FPSes, also there's nothing like sitting on Call of Duty MP for hours on end to be honest.

 

I'm preparing for the 10 year old GTA fans and CoD haters to start with the same old "OMFG COD IS REPETITIVEEEE OMFGM I PLAY BATTLEFIELD AND GTA BECUZ IM DIFFERENT WAA WAA WAA COD IS CRAP OMFG THEY DONT CHANGE ANYTHING WAAAAAAA". So bring it on.

Open World is the clear winner man, I realized that Open World or Sandbox games were worth $60 when i first bought GTA VC, I was used to play all them 4 Hour Movie shooters before. Also COD Sucks,

And one more thing, NO GAME IS FULLY NON LINEAR, Almost every game has linearity except for Minecraft or Terraria, They even have randomly generated worlds.
