ant00802
Hi, I recently bought GTA IV for the PC, I played it and noticed the game was lagging quite a bit, so I'm looking to upgrade my computer. I'm a novice when it comes to computer specification etc , I normally run my PC through my 40 inch tv which when I've been reading the performance of your PC can also depend on the screen resolution? I do have a 24 inch monitor running 1280x1024. Below is the spec of my computer, I'd be grateful of suggestions as to what I would need to upgrade in order for GTA IV to run smoothly on my computer. Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit CPU Intel Pentium E5400 @ 2.70GHz 30 °C Wolfdale 45nm Technology RAM 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 332MHz (5-5-5-15) Motherboard ASRock G31M-GS. (CPUSocket) 27 °C Graphics DELL E190S ([email protected]) 512MB GeForce 8400GS (Gigabyte) 55 °C Hard Drives 233GB Western Digital WDC WD2500AAKX-001CA0 ATA Device (SATA) 26 °C Optical Drives HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDRH20N ATA Device Audio Realtek High Definition Audio Thanks again. yoječ
GPU is the first to go. Where do you live and what's your budget?
unc13bud
he's right. get a 9500 gt/9600 gt/9800 gt, especially as that monitor is 1280x1024
ant00802
Hi mate thanks for the reply. I'm from the UK and probably my budget to upgrade my PC would be £200-300. To be fare the graphics weren't too bad when I loaded it up it was really laggy and jumpy though. Is different screen resolutions dependant on the CPU? As I said I normally plug my computer into my 40 inch tv. Thanks for the help!
ant00802
Can someone advise please? Need to know if it is best to buy new or cheaper to upgrade. My mate deals wi upgrading my PC for me but doesn't know requirements for gta iv. I'm a noob when it comes to computers and parts but I've read gta iv supports nvidia rather than amd. Can anyone recommend what CPU, graphics card and motherboard would enable me to play gta iv on high with police mod installed? I was looking at buying a dell Alienware x51 for 675 but was put off by reviews that upgrading your own pc is easier. So any saving on that is better. Ignore my previous post re the £200 budget. Thanks again...
luceberg
What is best value is to build your own. The pc you have now is not worth upgrading. You can choose between an Intel cpu/motherboard and an AMD cpu/motherboard, also between Nvidia and AMD graphics. Intel/Nvidia is the posh option and gives best performaqnce in this game. Windows 7 64bit is the best OS. Someone will recommend you a parts list, if you want to go that way.
ant00802
Thanks. Can anyone advise if the below would be compatible and run gta iv on high? luceberg
Imo, if you want cheap, you are better off with AMD.
ant00802
I have read on this forum on other posts that gta iv runs better with intel and nvidia is that not correct?
luceberg
Yes, it is correct, but if you go the Intel/Nvidia route, you might as well get an i5 3570, a GTX 660 ti, a 550watt psu and a better motherboard. It will give a great experience at 1080p. That's my opinion, anyway.
unc13bud
if you want to play gta IV a 1080p with nice settings, i say quad core. but in the meantime, oh never mind. watch this space... tonight i will build a dell e5400 and 8800 gt on 1920x1200 monitor and post my findings

ant00802
Can someone advise if Intel Core i5 3450 3.1GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor OR Intel Core i5 3470 3.20GHz Socket 1155 6MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor Is better? Oddily on the site I'm looking at the 3470 is £5 cheaper than the 3450. also, with the above spec, would that computer handle a 2gb graphics card rather than the 1gb? Gigabyte GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 VGA Dual DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card Gigabyte GTX 650 2GB GDDR5 VGA Dual DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card Unfortunately pricing up luceberg's suggestion is too expensive
yoječ
i5-3470 is slightly better. As for the graphics card - GTX650 2Gb is too expensive, you can buy faster graphics cards for the same money (like HD6870, or maybe GTX560, or GTX650Ti). ant00802
yojo thanks for the help mate. on the upgrade site I'm looking at the Gigabyte GTX 650 2GB GDDR5 is £108. The GTX 650 Ti SuperSuperClocked 2GB GDDR5 is £131. Can someone have a look at the below spec and advise me please? Intel Core i5 3550 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Socket 1155 VGA DVI HDMI 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard or Asus P8B75-M LX Motherboard (Intel B75, DDR3 RAM, SATA 6GB/s, Micro ATX, USB 3.0, PCI-Express 3.0, GPU Boost, Asus UEFI BIOS, Socket 1155) Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Vengeance Memory EVGA GTX 650 Ti SuperSuperClocked 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card Corsair 500W CX Builder 80 Plus Bronze PSU
Prometheus
The HD 6870/GTX 560 surprisingly aren't quite better than the 650Ti, they're almost equal. But as yojo said they are cheaper, so you might want to consider purchasing a GPU of an older generation.
ant00802
thanks Prometheus appreciate it.. other than the graphics card issue do you think the above is a good spec / to run gta iv?
