Dynamic pedestrian AI

So to create another discussion other than people's sour feelings about the delay, I wanted to discuss your thoughts on V's pedestrian AI.

Now I was watching the E3 demo clip of that game Watch Dogs and I was watching on how much more dynamic the Peds looked in that game (if it wasn't entirely scripted). In IV, the Peds would just walk around, occasionally talk on their phones or stand there and smoke a cigarette but wouldn't do much more than that, unless they were put in a specific place (ie: people doing Tai Chi in middle park or a burger shot employee washing windows) but that's all they would do and it was kinda boring. In Watch Dogs, you saw a couple actually walking together and having a much realistic discussion with each other and going about their lives, doing random things around their environment (IV had somthing like this but with only getting a hotdog from the vendor.).

Another good example was when there was a massive car accident at the intersection, a passer-byer rushed to the victim's car and helped her out and asked her if she's ok. People getting out of their cars and checking the damage and other drivers. In IV, if someone got into a wreck, they would just cuss you out in a funny way and drive on like nothing happened or get out their car and just wave their hands like "wtf?" and then get in their car and leave.

Also during the gunfight immediately after that, their was a driver that has been shot and you see the passenger getting totally emotional, crying and trying to bring the driver back to life. In IV, if the driver dies, the passenger would just run away from the scene scared sh*tless, every time.

For me I would love to see the Peds in V do a lot more things at their own will rather than just simply walking around for all eternity and also have their dialog to be much more detailed than a few funny one liners every 5 mins. Also I wanna see much more emotion in the Peds too and react to things a lot more realistic than just say "damn that sh*t was f*cked up!" and then go back to walking with their cup of coffee. Lol

TL;DR: do you think V will have a better and more dynamic ped AI like Watch Dogs and if so, how would you like it to be? smile.gificon14.gif

I hope so. One big reason sleeping dogs is so immersive despite the lackluster driving physics is that the pedestrians seem like real people. I know I keep going back to this example, but you can actually hear a mother arguing with her daughter over her boyfriend in the north point apartment. Hell, the best friend character gets mentioned at one point. The conversation actually progresses. That is amazing, and I hope V has something similar.

See, I don't hate all realism. Just the kind that makes me sit at a gas station, waiting for a fuel tank to fill up.

I liked how at 6:48 that pedestrian goes to help the person in the car. Is that crash scripted? If not, then that's a nice added touch - seeing how pedestrians react to what you do.

This is probably a dumb question, but is Watch Dogs next-gen? Those graphics look too amazing for current gen consoles.

I would think it's current Gen, Next Gen hasn't even been announced yet.

You got a good point, but have they announced a release date for Watch Dogs?

Damn. That probably means it won't look nearly as good as that on consoles.

Edit: My bad OP for going a little off topic.

Yeah I was asking the same question, I'm hoping that's not scripted because that is awesomely detailed!

Now just to make it clear I ain't trying to knock IV at all, cuz I mean in R*'s defense they made that sh*t back in 2006-08 and it was their first time with HD generation technology and IV was pretty much a good experiment. And they did a damn good job of it too. But I'm just hoping they could learn from Watch Dogs and incorporate a much more detailed and realistic AI! icon14.gif

Here's a good example, Peds reacting to events on the streets and take out their camera phones, like say you get into a fist fight in the streets and Peds all around would circle up and take out their phones and record you and make comments, or one would say "somebody should call the cops!" and then immediately someone else would respond "hang on I'm calling right now" and he would call and another guy who was cheering you on in the fight would respond to the man "hell naw let em fight!".

Or like you are burning out or drifting at an intersection for a long time and some Peds will take notice and start reacting by filming you and either cheer you on or call you crazy and you see them talking amongst other Peds about you, pointing and everything.

You know, small details like that wink.gif

According to the developer, it's definitely not scripted. I wish I could remember the E3 demo I watched, but they said you could've handled that mission in many different ways.

Would it fit GTA's tradition, though?

In this case, I think it would. Remember how in vice city when someone got killed, other people would rush to look over the corpse? Remember how people actually did have conversations with each other in San Andreas? So yeah, I think it would fit perfectly.

Plus, it's not a fuel system, which instantly gains it 1000 points right off the bat.

LOL. Is that even a question? Of course man! If you're going to create a parody of a real life city, would you make the AI stupid as f*ck? lol.gif

The E3 2012 demo of Watch Dogs was shown on a High-End PC and the game was announced to release for XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2013. Other platforms are a possibility but it's not sure yet if the game will release for next-generations consoles.

OT: It would be pretty cool if the AI of GTA V would be that much of an improvement over GTA IV. There will be definitely an improvement since it was mentioned in the Game Informer cover-story that pedestrians will have something like a daily schedule so for example you could see some farmer at the bus stop in the morning and then in the afternoon you could see them working in the hills. But the question is how big the difference will be compared to GTA IV or other Rockstar titles that were released in the past years.

If I fire an assault rifle, I don't want some cheap 1 second scream, one fat policeman nonchalantly strolling into the scene after finishing his donut, examining the area, leaving, and everything returning to normal.

I want to fire my rifle and hear EVERYONE there screaming their guts out, running to cover, stealing nearby cars as a chance to escape, and everyone scurrying quickly causing a huge crash with lots of stampeding, while 5-6 squad cars filled with tactical troops make their way to the scene in an organized fashion and proceed to open fire after someone attempts to talk me out of it through a loudpspeaker.

Idk why but I just love the entire car crash scene. Some random guy opens up the door and helps someone out, also it's pretty cool to see how the husband/boyfriend reacts whenever his wife goes down in crossfire. GTAV needs this man.

I think the only way you're going to get that, for a long time at least, is to actually do it in real life. But I wouldn't advise that.

Sorry for being the pessimist, but I image watchdogs to be an "8 days" kinda thing.

That or the game won't be as good as advertised.

I'm liking everything I see mentioned here. This type of stuff is really impressive, especially in a open-world dynamic setting. I don't know if I'd like completely realistic AI though. Having people crying and trying to resuscitate their loved ones would be a little too real for me in GTA. I sorta like just having the peds say some funny lines and running away scared. I do agree with the other things mentioned in this thread though.

Personally, I've always wanted to see people park their cars and go in a store or get in their car parked on the street and drive off.

I assume that a few of those Watchdog pedestrians were scripted to behave like that for the mission, i don't think they will be that advanced in normal freeroam gameplay.. I don't know this for certain, but if they can make the AI like that i will be surprised, and seriously impressed

Yeah true, but you gotta admit, when the first time you shot someone in IV and saw them clench up in pain, you know that felt so real and you felt sorry for them....then you got used to it wink.gif.

I never understood why Rockstar's AI was so stupid, I mean my dream is to have a game with realistic AI, I mean it's possible, it's not impossible!

RDR wasn't even so "dynamic"... To start with, I mean that guy suicides after his wife dies, I mean if it was dynamic it could have endless outcomes, not every time he'd die by killing himself.

Another time when that guy screams for help because his buddy is hanged, lots of different outcomes would occur. That's what I would call dynamic.

Still, R*'s AI sucks balls. They do great games, but their AI is sh*t.

In the first trailer, you could see the two female joggers look back at the male joggers and giggle. Looks like it is more dynamic. Also when beta Franklin fires up his convertible in the first trailer, the lady notices and walks away impressed.
