uncredited
Foremost, hi to all Since I have got a brand new computer I was pretty happy to be able to play Grand Theft Auto IV at maxed settings. Unfortunately I still have some kind of “lags,” or slowdowns, especially during night time. I was wondering if some of you could help me by giving yours feedbacks on my benchmark you’ll find underneath. I do not use a “commandline.txt” as I believe I have no acquaintance with this type of things (even though I have read the topic about it). As far as I know my computer should be able to play this game even at very-high settings, shouldn’t it? Could someone suggests a proper commandline that is suitable to my configuration? I often defrag my hard disk and also use Contig for the specific GTA IV folder. Could it help if I disable my antivirus as it takes not as resources as I first thought? I know this game was badly configurated for us, PC users anyhow. If it could help, I have disabled both auto-save and replay system. Feel free to give me advices and stuff, it would be appreciated. Thanks to all, have fun and have a good day. unc13bud
you have to turn your shadows down, especially on amber lighting environment.
uncredited
Thanks for your answer, but I do not really understand. Do you mean that my shadow settings are the only issue? Do I have to turn it into medium? Because I do not want to change my graphic settings everytime the landscape changes Is there any commandline that could help me please? Prometheus
Does the game lags or does it stutters? I see you're getting almost 60FPS in the benchmark. Anyways you can use FRAPS to check how much you're actually getting in-game.
unc13bud
Do you mean that my shadow settings are the only issue? yeah, pretty much. shadows are what make the game look realistic, but are also the reason why GTA IV taxes computers so much. all those cars need to be shaded, all those buildings need to be shaded, all those NPCs need to be shaded... luceberg
The graphics card is relatively weak, though your settings are about right. As said, turning shadows to medium would help, but would not look so good. You can use the commandlines -reservedapp 0 and -memrestrict xxxxxxxxx where the number is your resource usage x1024 x 1024. This will lessen stutters and popins. Disabling antivirus would not help, as you have plenty of cpu power.

Concerning the graphic card, it looks weak but it can handle any recent game at high or at least in a very correct way, i.e. MP3 at maxed settings. This looks enough for me, sir. My game does not lag, not at all. It just stutters - as you said - but not all the time; it appears in some place of the map and you are right when you're talking about the shadow because this must be the real determinant. What do I have to do with the xxxxxxxx in the commandline? Yes, Sorry for my ignorance about that. Edited February 15, 2013 by Imbredking
luceberg
At the bottom of the in game graphics settings, there is a resource usage number which changes depending on your settings. It is the number of Mb of graphics card memory being used. For the memrestrict value, you can take this number and multiply it by 1024 x 1024 to give the value in bytes. Here is a topic on the subject and another here.
uncredited
I'll take a look at it, thanks a lot! I might post the results in the following days if I have time in order to inform you Have fun!
mitchnorton
First of all "Windows 8 Professionel" doesn't exist because 1) it's called "Windows 8 Pro" or "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" (if you have the Media Pack addon), and yes this detail does matter because the OS tag is what the game picks up on, and 2) "Windows 8 Professionel" certainly doesn't exist because it's spelled Professional. uncredited
This clearly is Windows 8 Pro 100% legit. It is actually spell "professionnel" because I live in France and so my computer langage is.

uncredited
For those who wanted a kind of results, the commandline did not help - at least I did not notice great changes as the game still stuttered a little bit. Meanwhile, I've notice water issue as it looked like a complete mirror and I could not even the notice the différences between water and the sky. However, I have found a fix on here for Ati users. Talking about mirror, the one in Playboy X's apartment is very shinny and Niko looks like a ghost in it, I think it is a card comptability issue, just like the water. I mean, R* f-cked up seriously. I made some researchs and I have just noticed I had to change my preferences on Catalyst. I also updated DirectX. Anyway, it SEEMS like I have not as stuttering as I had before. This was just to inform you people. Do not hesitate if anybody has other suggestions that might help for an even more stable game, and also concerning the mirror issue. Thanks to all Edited February 17, 2013 by Imbredking
LoreLegend
Your CPU should handle the game with no problems I think the GPU is your bottleneck

Well if you won't buy a new GPU you can just lock this topic because if you don't buy a new GPU then I shall say: Good luck playing GTA IV the way it is now Its as simple as listen to advice or don't ask for help at all Anyway my thoughts about the GPU is get a new one or else you will never get rid of your lag
uncredited
Well, I don't know if you have read all the posts correctly. Thanks to better Catalyst preferences, I have no lag anymore, playing the game in high settings as you can see in the benchmark. I mean, people helped and the game is ok now. Just said I cannot buy a new one now since I have others priorities.

uncredited
I would like to know if it was possible to play with the patch 1.0.4.0 - since this patch is the best one for performance - and still using the GFWL thing. Thanks y'all!
unc13bud
it used to work for me, haven't played online in over a year though. i heard steam users have to update no mattter what
lydianduck
You can downgrade your steam version to 1.0.4.0 just fine, except you lose multiplayer. I use vanilla IV downgraded to 1.0.4.0 and EFLC for multiplayer. Here's a guide about how you go about doing it: http://www.gtagaming.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128300
uncredited
I'm sorry, I did not mention the fact that I have the original version; I'll re-install the game on a fresh Windows installation and see.
