MIKON8ERISBACK
The effects of outdated electrical infrastructure are always pretty bad when the sh*t hits the fan, which it did during Hurricane Sandy. One of the very few advantages to living in Canada (or at least Southern Ontario) is that real estate developers are explicitly required by law to bury the transmission lines that run to people's houses. In most neighborhoods where I am built since the 1970s, you virtually never see above ground transmission lines unless they are high tension (500KV) lines or short distance transmission lines found alongside some major roads. Virtually all lines running to homes or even any buildings are buried. Believe it or not, some electric companies continue to utilize flimsy wood poles, even after old ones are destroyed in storms. Where I am, we got I would say over a foot of snow. I spent the better part of yesterday shoveling the drive way. It was easily the worst storm I have seen in years going back to my childhood, granted this was the first real Canadian winter in a couple of years. It looks like New York got hit too judging by this webcam imagery, but they seem to have handled it almost seamlessly. Many major roads in my area have not yet been plowed. Ryan
The storm started here about 10PM last night. We've got about two feet of snow down on the ground at the moment and it's still snowing with wind gusts of 100KM/H. Here's me standing in the snow. I'm 6 feet tall and it's past my knees. Easily over two feet. Just a picture of the road I live on and the storm.

Ryan
I'm 6 feet tall Watch out we got a badass over here I'd tall and lanky. Figured I should say how tall I was to prove I'm not a midget standing in a few centimeters of snow

MIKON8ERISBACK
I have a little something here that was just too awesome and too funny to pass up. Drivers became so fed up with the response (or lack thereof) from the snow removal services in Toronto that they actually resorted to ditching their cars, getting their hands on snow shovels, and shoveling the snow themselves. True Canadians to say the least. Metropolitan areas such as Toronto face significant transportation and traffic headaches even during periods of "normal" weather and I think that this was a priceless way to overcome the adversity that faced them all. fgcarva1
Metropolitan areas such as Toronto face significant transportation and traffic headaches even during periods of "normal" weather I live right downtown and there seem to be no issues with the build-up here. Not many issues yesterday either. I can't speak for the highways (QEW, 401, etc.) but here it's all ok.
FAH-Q
I think I f*cked up my car trying to get it out of the snow. I also think I broke my back shoveling, I need a drink.
Ryan
Posted this picture in the Z earlier. Figured I'd share here for people to see. To show you how much snow we got, this is the main entrance to the gym and arena complex at my university.

And I thought a couple feet of snow that we got was bad! You must have been snowed in and trapped. It's good knowing that you rode it out and survived, but remember that us Ontario people are not as coddled and pussied out as you may think. I would suggest you submit your photos to local news media.
DarrinPA
I've never EVER seen snow . More importantly, I wonder how it feelz. Like warm apple pie. Wait... nevermind. If you have a blender just grind up ice, or if your freezer has frost inside you can atleast make a snow ball. I know it doesn't compare to being in a blizzard but unless you travel somewhere, it's hard to explain how it's fun to be in and yet frustrating to other people at the same time. Ryan - that picture is awesome! Hopefully the snow doesn't melt too fast or your town will be flooded. EDIT - The roads are horrible! The governor of Massachusetts ordered no driving after 4 pm. Yup, and violating the travel ban can land you with one year of imprisonment plus a $500 fine. I could see the need for a fine, because it will cost money to save people when they're stranded but prison time is just the government's way of screwing people. It's so unnecessary. You can't trun it into a police state just becuse it snows. Edited February 10, 2013 by DarrinPA
