If they need more time to polish, how is it...

Yes, they need to polish the game, make it shine etc.

I prefer that over an unfinished game!

BUT... how is it that they know already then, that it will be released on september 17th worldwide?

Do they know exactly how long they need to polish? Because that's what I thought they have been doing the last few months? And they didn't even know the exact date then!

They believe that 7 months is the maximum time required to fix the currently arduous issues they are facing. That means they can finish sometimes earlier, from my perspective, but they won't take longer than 7 months.

i hope they finish this 'polishing' much sooner than 7 months.. remember that the disks have to be pressed and distributed by then as well

Exactly OP, that's why I think it's more a case of delaying for a different release window than polish.

Who knows, they might even finish the 'polishing' phase earlier, although the game will still release on 17th Sep.

R* decide the date by estimating when the game will be finished, then adding X amount of time to that date. That's how all Devs do it.

So GTAV will be done well before September 17, you can bet on that. Maybe R* will even pull the date closer if they finish early? But I highly doubt it... I don't think that's even been done before by any game developer.

Because that's when they found an "open window", in other words, no last of US, no Tomb raider, no Bioshock, not big known releases and also comes in time to fix the results of the end of one and the start of another fiscal year.

They needed 6 months to make a sht port for PC, so why would they need more then that for "polishing"? Unless they are codding it all over doubt even MP would take so long to "fix". This is purely business strategy.

Just a note that they didn't say they need 7 or 8 months to polish the game. They added four months. There's obviously still things they planned on developing and adding.

I'll share my post from this thread

They didn't say they need 8 months to polish the game. They said they added 4 months.

I doubt what they meant with "polishing" is like polishing off a car or kitchen counter top in the real world. To them it probably means something entirely different in a video game development environment. That message came direct from the development team... and didn't have any PR spin to it. The press release simply stated "additional development time".

And again, I doubt they meant "we need 8 months to polish the game". They probably looked at it and thought "sh*t, we have all these features we want to add, all these things in multiplayer that's going to take a sh*t load of time to code when you have to battle against network induced lag. We're already working 7 days a week, often till 4-5am in the morning... it's going to be stressful to meet this in time and still have time to polish off the game. So let's add an additional 4 months to focus on polishing off the game once we added all these things we had planned adding between now and May".

Like seriously, that 7 days a week thing is actually true. They probably thought that if you overwork people, that impacts the quality at the end of the day. Rather add 4 months and improve the quality of the people actually working on the game, which in turn improves the quality of the actual game.

At least, that's the way I see it. People misinterpreted the "polishing" thing and think it meant 8 months of "polishing".

More on topic.... and to the question asked by the OP.... "how is it that they know it'll be ready on September 17th"? Well, they hope it will be. They hoped it would be ready by May, but they probably looked at their schedule and what they still want to do, and realized they won't make it. So they added four months I assume so that they can more comfortably commit to a worldwide release date.

Yeah Adriaan more or less summed it up.

Remember OP, that when a date is set so far in advance, it's not as if they're magically predicting the future. They know the game will be "finished" comfortably by around say early August.. and any time they can squeeze in for development between then and whenever they send the game to the pressing plant, the better.

But yeah, the safe margin for the game being finished is WAY before September 17th so that it's definitely out by then.

By comparison, GTA IV was leaving the manufacturing plant and heading to stores around the world 12 days before release date. That's how people ended up playing it so long before it came out.

It's like Scottie on Star Trek.

They probably knew they'd need an extra 4 months to finish it so they tacked on an extra two just to give them lots of room.

i believe they were developing the pc version of gtaiv alongside the console versions so "They needed 6 months to make a sht port for PC" i don't believe is accurate.

also gtav is such a big property i don't believe the last of us, tomb raider or bioshock (or really any other releases) would/could realistically make a dent in it's lifetime sales "oh no tomb raider (which at best will give a month or 2 of playtime) is coming out at the same time as gtav (which i guarantee i'll still be playing in 2 years) which should i buy?

They just announced that it will be released in Spring to Increase Hype and No of Pre-Orders.

They just wanted to give it more time to polish because they were not sure if they could make it to May.

But it wont release earlier either if they finish up like in may/june. Then they just keep polishing.

Everyone talking about "polishing".

Now I have that stupid idea stuck in my head, that for the next 7 months all they do is polish every single BD/DVD to make it shine.

Thank you.

It's not a 7 month delay ffs, it's 4 months from the original planned release date and 7 months from NOW. Just be patient, go out and enjoy life while you still can.

I can guarantee you (having worked in a production driven environment) that a project lead started identifying things that were slipping in a timetable during a daily or weekly production meeting. This led to some sort of discussion about meeting the timetable and then they re-established a timeline that could be met, based on what needed to be completed. Happens all the time when you are working in production.

Now this is speculation, but short answer, they know that they can be done by 9.17.13 because they revised their project plan to meet that goal. That's not to say it can't slip again, but when you revise a delivery timeline, you usually try to give yourself some wiggle room.
