Now they're lower on the totem pole than the black gangbangers and the Italians; Gerry seems to imply that their downfall was brought about by their carelessness and prioritizing "wine and women" over the actual business of organized crime. When Gerry claims "all we've ever been is bitches", it's likely he's engaging in a bit of hyperbole; what he probably means is that the family has been at the bottom of the heap as long as he can remember, and they lost all their power in pursuit of selfish, trivial pleasures. His ambition seems to be to restore the McReary clan to its former glory, something none of his siblings (except maybe Packie, to a lesser extent) have any desire to do, which frustrates him. In NYC, Irish organized crime, while it still exists, is pretty much a shadow of it's former self. Instead of being highly organized, powerful mobs, most Irish crime groups in NYC have now been relegated tooperating on a smaller scale and being freelancers and contractors for other more powerful crime groups like the Mafia or Russian Mob. GTA IV highlights this in the game, with cut-scenes like the one's you saw. There is a cut-scene where one of the McReary's is talking about decades ago when just the mere mention of their family name used strike fear into many people in Liberty City's underworld, then Packie cuts in and tells him to stop talking about that, as it was a long time ago, and they have long lost their once-great power, it's all about moving on. hitman_for_hire
The Irish NYC mob are still very big it was only last feb the police locked up The new leader of the westies. He got caught flying weed from California to NYC in his own 14 seat private Jet worth millions of dollars so I can imagine how much money they were making. The reason people think the NYC Irish mob have vanished is because they don't murder As many people as they did in the 70's or 80's. They got smarter as time passed an noticed body's bring bad luck. I'm sure there are still groups of big-time, powerful Irish-American gangsters active in New York City, but as for large-scale Irish-American criminal organizations ? Nah, I very much doubt it, more likely to find that in Boston.

The Irish mob were always a bunch of young loose cannons with 1 or 2 thinkers at the top of the ladder they never were really organised they were crazy but not really organised. I'm pretty sure that the Irish mob is still strong in Boston. But definitely not New York. In NYC, the Mafia still runs most traditional rackets, along with the Russians, and much of the more profitable organized crime there now revolves around the drug trade, which is largely controlled by Hispanic drug organizations, Black and Hispanic street gangs. GTA_TROLL-BOOST
They aren't so big now. The Pegorino crime family (a weak family) take advantage of the McReary family. I'd consider them a strong "gang" like the Bloods and Crips. Packie McReary, is a cocaine user. Derrick McReary, is a heroin addict and Gerry is also a coke user but is probably more aware and involved in the business. Gerald is aware of the FIB, where as Derrick and Packie aren't so much. Yeah this is pretty much it. The McReary families gang are modelled on the Westies who's only real era of power was in the 1970's (and even then they were hired guns for La Cosa Nostra). Gerry was born in 1973 so it's unlikely that he was aware of any criminal activities being carried out by his Father and his associates during this time. I'm sure he's heard many stories about the power of the gang in years gone by but for as long as he has been an active member of the gang all they have only ever been bitches working for other gangs. He's also quite drunk in that scene so he's naturally overstating the facts through alcohol induced rage too.
