are you just painting anyone who didn't like the movie as "contrarian to make themselves feel superior??"

don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Force Awakens, but don't get me wrong that sh/t was a lazy rehash of A New Hope.

I think this reflects what a lot of people were going through last year. I'll always love Star Wars but I'm allowed to be a critical fan. like, I'm capable of holding complex opinions and not merely doing so for the sake of being contrarian. I haven't seen Rogue One yet because I'm waiting to see it with my family first in another few days but I'm glad to hear that people are really into it so far.

I'll give it as fair a shake as I give anything else.

is Rogue One overrated? is it better than the prequels? I literally have zero expectations because I've only watched trailers, don't read the expanded universe content, and haven't been following any behind the scenes. I'm ready to love it assuming they don't do another f/cking Death Star trench run ;)

Jeezes christ man... what the f*ck is wrong with this world.

Star wars the force awakens ripped of the original trilogy and gets in general 4 to 5 star ratings...while it also has not that exelent acting and the story overall...jeez.. most of it is goddamn predictable.

Rogue One though....jeezes....they brought the style of the good parts in EU universum stuff to the big screen...and the story is great, they respected the original trilogy, the characters are decent and are brought just greatly to the screen and...jeez man that ending...the way they did it...just great.

Also Darth Vader...the few times he is shown...that is the legit Darth Vader man...Same for Tarkin.

The only bad thing is that...seeing as the force awakens is more populair we might end up with more ripoff overly shiny cgi sh*t with sh*tty acting instead of actual quality.

Haven't seen it yet, but I'm seeing some people report that a lot of theaters weren't even filled to 25% capacity? Was this true for anyone else?

Quiet where I am, but then I did go during the day, so folk were still in work/school, and not only that the Cinema complex near me is usually quiet anyway, especially since the local bus service reduced the buses there?!?. But there was a fair few folk going in for the early evening showings as I was coming out of the afternoon one.

I'll give it as fair a shake as I give anything else.

It's not overrated, and anything is better than the prequels.. except maybe Episode 3, to be fair that wasn't that bad, but could have been a lot better.

I've not followed any of the expanded universe stuff either (although I do have a very good rough idea), the exception being the old PC game Tie Fighter, which some consider to be canon; and I wish they had introduced Admiral Thrawn in Episode VII... although there is still time. Anywho, I totally loved it, and you don't need to know any of the expanded universe stuff either, you only need to know main thread of the episodic releases, which they've been very good at referencing,in fact you probably could even get away with not knowing any of the original trilogy stuff or Episode VII, and catch this in chronological order and it would still make perfect sense.

(...)Let's just treat each other with respect. Some of the debates in here last year got a little stupid.(...)

Hear, hear.

The last year was... difficult. I get embarrassed thinking about some of the things I've said back then. I stand by my points, that hasn't changed a bit, but I wish I kept a cool head and was more open to criticism. To say that I was a riled up fanboy is putting it mildly. Someone had to defend Rey's honor, though.

About the popular reception, I think the pendulum won't swerve as wildly as with TFA this time around. RO is getting somewhat mixed response from the mainstream press already and the tensions in the fanbase aren't as high. TFA was a fuse just waiting to be lit and I don't think there was any way for that movie to leave unscathed. RO has a much lower profile and a more specific target audience.

Story-wise my favorite character and his journey was Cassian. It may have not been the most believable character development...

as he seemingly just decides to not be a killer, but in the moment. There's not really a catalyst to why he suddenly isn't going to kill Galen. Although he does see Galen stand up for his crew and maybe seeing Stormtroopers kill them, made him realize he's no better. But at the same time I was certain Cassian was not looking through his scope when they were shot.

I would've had Cassian kill Galen, and had him see the impact it had on Jyn to make him change. But still it is a very interesting thought. Why aren't the Rebels more ruthless? Maybe now we know why, and that's because Cassian showed them that they could be better than the Empire.

Cassian was my favorite too. Funny, I kept my eye on him ever since the marketing campaign started and my assessment of his character based on the trailers and other promo material was proven to be completely wrong - yet, the reality turned out to be even better.

I agree that the character growth was pretty sudden. Both with him and Jyn, actually, but Jyn had more of a basis, that snap moment, for that abrupt shift to work.

The problem is that while him killing Galen would certainly make more sense, I can't imagine how they'd redeem him in the eyes of the audience and how Jyn could work with him after that. Well, he could be an ally out of necessity, but since the writers wanted them to be on the same wavelenght going to Scarif, they backed themselves into the corner. Maybe if he had a stronger reason to believe Jyn about the sabotage Galen planned...

Since I enjoy the rest of his presentation though, I'm willing to let it slide. They've previously showed enough, non-verbally, that Cassian isn't completely okay with what he's doing and I imagine having both the target's daughter on board, forcing him to lie to her face about murdering her father and the possibility that Galen may yet have an important intel pressed him just enough to make him stop in his tracks.

What I really liked after that is that Cassian's arc isn't about redemption. He doesn't seek absolution or clear conscience. He says it clearly, he knows what he has done, pays the price for it daily and isn't looking for a way out. It's about making sense of it. Making it worth it. It's about doing the things that need to be done in the name of "the greater good", but without losing sight of said good and becoming absorbed in the questionable methods and compromised morality. Knowing when it's time to literally not pull the trigger.

A balance between light and dark, in other words.

No, I am not painting all people who dislike the movie as being contrarian. Read the part where I said it's okay to dislike a movie.

Really loved the soundtrack

I was expecting to hear some John Williams but by the end it didn't even matter Giacchino did his own thing and it worked.

(...)

Yeah, I thought it was fine too. On the first viewing I wished he'd tone down the bombast a little bit (I know fanfares are SW's thing, but they were a bit excessive here) and I was weirded out by how much Jyn's theme echoed Across the Stars. On the second viewing though, the music fit perfectly and really enhanced the movie.

Spoilers for the finale:

A perfect accompaniment for a perfect sequence. How it starts all melodic and bittersweet as Jyn and Cassian make their way from the facility to the beach and then breaks and swells as the Death Star fires - then pitch down and again a crescendo as the Devastator appears to block off Raddus' ship.

The new Imperial theme is pretty good too and I'd like to see it used again as a general motif for the Empire - since the March is now mainly just Vader's own theme.

Overall, the score is on the lower end of the spectrum in the series (no matter how good you are, it's hard to stand up to John Williams), but I think people give Giacchino too much sh*t. It's great given that he had only four weeks to put it together and record it. Just as good as his Star Trek music.

Edit:

@infectedG636

Whew... 5%, I guess. But very, very effective 5%.

f*cking loved it.

Was a bit creeped out by Tarkin, initially thinking they got a really close double and added some prosthetics to his face. Then realized it was CGI and was pretty impressed with it. Still fell on the uncanny valley. Leia was less creeped out by, perhaps because it was a shorter time and she didn't do much

Oh man, when I saw Vader boarding the Rebel ship, and the dudes in those uniforms, and I couldn't believe they were going to end that way. Then Vader on board just massacring all of them, cutting them down like nothing, and I started to cry tears of joy as my childhood was connected to now. And then Leia, and I had no idea she'd be in this, and then the blockade runner trying to run away, oh man. Perfect! Damn happy with that ending.

Ahh and the little cameo by Ponda Baba and Evazian! Such a nice touch!

Really impressed with it. Made me very happy and made me look forward to whatever else they make with a lot more excitement.

The droid was hilarious as well.

So how much of Vader is in this movie? No spoilers, just give me a percentage.

I'm going to put it in a spoiler tag, but it's just a percentage...

<5%.

Man I loved Rogue One. It really is one for the fans. As the final act progressed I could feel myself welling up, then by the end I was crying like a baby.... and I wasn't the only one. Got a round of applause in the cinema too! That rarely happens round here in Scotland.

I know the Internet is full of wankers and trolls, but I really don't see what all the bitching is about. I keep seeing all this nonsense about how there's no white guys in the main rebel group not that it even f*cking matters, but FFS Captain Andor looks pretty white to me. Just not white with an American/British accent.

Also people bitching about Vader's quip being out of character, it's perfectly in character. "I find your lack of faith disturbing "

Anyway can't wait to see this again, I'm going back at least twice.

Edit: Also meant to say, if the rumours are true and Disney ordered reshoots, coz the original cut was too dark, then wtf was in that? It must've been DARK!!

Saw it a second time.

Vader's big scene still made my heart beat out of my chest. I just don't know how to describe it. It's such an amazing moment that of which I've wanted to see my entire life.

Rebels S3 spoiler.

Cz5cVKMWEAEGO43.jpg

Well, that was fast.

Apparently, the two-parter will explain Saw's breathing problems. The VD mentions that his lungs are filled with Geonosian insecticide and that his medical droid wants to discontinue the treatment as he thinks it would be more ethical to just let Saw die at this point.

Ouch.

Also in the VD, there's a note that Mon Mothma was ousted from the Senate in 2 BBY. I wonder if that will factor in the second half of S3 too.

I really hope we'll get to see more of the RO characters in the future. I want a novel about Cassian and K2's spy exploits, or one set even before, back when Cassian was a member of a Separatist militia, a novel about Jyn's time with Saw's Partisans, a novel about Chirrut and Baze before the Empire raided the Temple. Even though the movie ended the way it did, there are still many stories to tell with this crew.

I just read that...

...Hera...

...officially "appears" in the movie! I say that because "appears" means a voice and not actually being shown in person. That made me happy.

Okay, on another subject, is anyone against letting loose with spoilers in here yet? I'll give you until midnight (EST) to say so, and I'll extend the spoiler tag requirement.

Yeah, it's pretty cool!

And she's a general too, guess that means that Sato is officially getting Thrawned.

There are two other Rebels cameos as well (putting them in separate tags, just in case).

Chopper shows up in the hangar on Yavin and the Ghost appears in multiple shots during the battle of Scarif.

I also loved the Coruscant dream/flashback, not just because of Coruscant itself, but also because that was pretty much directly lifted from James Luceno's Catalyst. I was just reading the book in the week before RO came out and bam, here is the movie itself drawing from it. Not to mention that seeing Krennic be such an ass to Lyra in the opening was even more biting knowing how they clashed in the past.

It's so nice that LFL are treating the ancillary material with such respect. Everything matters!

Wathed Rogue One last night and loved it,even more than Episode 7. Brutal, down to earth (as possible in SW) movie that showed that even Rebels have some shades of grey, doing what is necessary to survive and continue the fight against opression. And it connect with a New Hope perfectly.

Rogue One team sacrify itself in a true suicide mission and by the end you do feel for them. Also those two scenes with Vader were great, especially him destroying the rebels like its nothing. As for pun not being in character, just remember Empire Strikes Back and 'Apology accepted,Captain Needa'.

I saw...

The Ghost in three shots I think. You just gotta wonder who is on board?

I looked for Chopper, but never saw him. And I'm hearing people say it's obvious. Guess I'm seeing it a third time.

And it turns out...

Vanessa Marshall does not Hera in the movie. She does the voice of a "rebel pilot", which is what Hera is, but I think she means a rebel fighter pilot.

I wouldn't say it's obvious. Nowhere near as the other two cameos. If I wasn't explicitly told where to look, I would never have found him until, like, tenth rewatch on Blu-Ray.

As for the new turn of events in that other thing - no one can stop my headcanon.

It was Hera and that's it for me.

I think I'm going to see it for the third time too. I guess I'll just drop the AC movie for that and wait for the home release. It's really shaping up to be the second Warcraft and while that's fine by me, I suppose my presence in the theater won't miraculously warrant a sequel and save the movie from crashing at the box office. *shrug*

Anyway, I'll try to watch ANH beforehand too. I know this is a controversial opinion, but I never particulary loved that movie. I like it and respect it, but it is easily the weakest of the OT and under RotS for me. But I think RO will retroactively add to it. Up the tension, make the Empire more threatening, give the movie a darker underlining making it worthy of its title, since now we've seen first-hand just how desperate the Alliance is.

I already want to scream at Luke, Leia and Han having the ceremony in the end for being such self-congratulatory bastards. Good people died so you can pat yourselves on the backs for finishing the job and you don't even mention them!

I unironically want a short eulogy scene squeezed into the next re-release of ANH. Or just like a shot of a memorial, with all the pictures of Rogue One, just before the ceremony scene. They could add the casualties from the battle of Yavin there too, a picture of Bail Organa, of Obi-Wan, to fold it on ANH itself. If we can have shots of Coruscant and Naboo in RotJ, then I don't know why we couldn't acknowledge RO too.

On that other subject, spoiler tags for Rogue One Spoilers are no longer necessary.

We're approximately five years away from Endor right now. With a time skip or two like between S2 and 3, they could get it done in four seasons. With seven seasons total, Rebels would run about as long as TCW was supposed to before it was cancelled. So, it's doable.

But given that they are obviously already setting up separate trajectories for all the main players and Kanan has to be out of the picture post-ANH, I think Scarif is going to be the series' big finale too. But maybe it's just that the current crew that will slowly phase out. First Kanan, then Ezra and they could then easily reboot the show and build a new cast around Hera, with Sabine breaking off to do her own thing on Mandalore post-TESB.

Given how strongly TCW was tied to Rebels, I really don't think these characters are going to be unceremoniously forgotten. The next show will definitely draw heavily from this one.

Since we're brushing upon the inner workings of LFL, it turns out that one of the plans for the ending was that Jyn and Cassian would survive. While Edwards wanted a "kill 'em all" finale right from the start, he thought Kennedy and the other higher-ups wouldn't want a downer ending. However they surprised him when they agreed that everyone should die. Interesting. Given that we know from the trailers that there were some significant changes to the third act, I wonder wherther the survival ending wasn't shot after all and only the reshoots changed it back. It would be pretty ironic, considering the rumors that swirled around the reshoots earlier this year.

There is one place where I do see the reshoots possibly hurting the movie though and that is Jyn's characterization. From the early trailers and information, it seems like she was supposed to be much more militant, rather than the resignated drifter we got in the final movie. You've got the first teaser with "I rebel", Saw's speech and there are other early bits and pieces of info from the cast. It's like she was supposed to start out the story heading in the same direction Saw and Cassian ended up in, but eventually reclaiming her ideals after learning of her father's actions.

And we do get that in the finished movie, but now it's as a consequence of her shedding her mask of apathy and disinterest. And since we don't really get to see her invested in the Rebel cause beforehand, her speechifying on Yavin can feel somewhat jarring after that first half of the movie. It doesn't ruin the character for me, or make the arc implausible - we know that she fought with the Partisans and it's so obvious that the hologram scene was the major snap moment that reignited her resolve. But if she was a freedom fighter right from the start, only shifting from cynicism and hate to idealism and hope, the growth would seem a bit smoother.

In general, the groundwork for the characters, that's something I found lacking in the film. Both Jyn and Cassian just needed a couple more personal scenes early on where they'd get to know each other better.
