I heard that GTA Vice City was originally going to be an expansion pack for GTA 3. Similar to London 1969 with GTA 1. However apparentley they ran out of disc space and it was made in a full game. Anyone have any details on this?

No, I have not heard anything about that sadly and don't you mean the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy? Which includes; Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Vice City and lastly Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. They were all released in different platforms aswell.

No, because VC has a slightly different RenderWare engine, than GTA III. They couldn't make GTA VC on the same engine as III.

I'm talking about how originally the game was going to be a simple mission/expansion pack that required GTA 3 to play and used the same engine, much like London 1969 for GTA 1. Vice City seemed to have recycled a lot of elements. (I havent played it but after watching the gameplay videos it looks a lot like GTA 3) but this means that earley in it's development it was the same game but with new missions and a 80's theme. The're would be much less content than the game we have now. This couldov'e meant that Rockstar was planning to make yearley mission packs for GTA 3. But dropped it as the're wasn't enough disc space. Of course I don't know if it was true if it originally was a mission/expansion, and that's why I made this thread. I actully wished the're wouldove been enough disc space. Would be intresting to see what GTA mission packs Rockstar would make.

Originally it was, around the time they was doing the PC version of GTA3, Vice City was meant to be a "Miami-esque" expansion pack, but once things got going, they decided to just do a full game and go full out, this was mentioned in an interview with Leslie, the producer of the GTA series.

Intresting. Can you post a link to the interview?

Yeah I think it might have been. I've got a PowerStation magazine that was released after GTA 3 but before Vice City, it shows people on the magazine's forum discussing when GTA 4 will come out, they were guessing probably 2004. How little did they know what they were in for! No one knew that GTA would be as big as it is today...

I've found an article describing this, will scan it and upload it soon (it's in Dutch though).

What it says:

GTA 3: Vice City, the official expansion for GTA 3. will take you to a new lively city in the 80's ambience. In this new city you'll have to deal with cuban motorbike gangs and you too will be able to drive on a motorbike. Blablabl, boats, blablabla, airplanes. It's a non-linear campaign against corrupt politicians and Cuban gangsters.

Vice Citys storyline and characters were so much better than III's though

That's probably what made them decide to make it a full game of it's own, instead of just an expansion.

Well, in a sense it is a standalone expansion.

You just repeated what the OP questioned.

I think they thought it would make more money if it was a stand-alone game.

It makes sense that it was spose to be an expansion, which why it wasn't called "GTA IV".
