GTAV's Emotionality

With every major R* title in recent times, they've provided an emotionally driven narrative that has you literally care about the main protagonist (RDR specifically) to the point where some are brought to tears when things go very, very wrong.

Trailer #2 indicated a much more light-hearted GTA than we experienced in GTAIV, their classic humor is back in a big way, it looks crazy, exaggerated and surreal - very contrast to what we've seen recently, so my question is, will they proceed the trend of very emotional narratives?

Will the game go even darker, more twisted and visceral than what we saw in GTAIV or will it be more along the lines of SA where it has a certain degree of comical relief, but silmuntaniously holding a great and intriguing story?

Yea I also think that they are gonna show an emotional story, they have shown to be able to create an attaching and emotional story such as Red Dead Redmeption.

I also think they'll provide an emotional story, all I hope is that Chop doesn't die 'cause I'm a sucker for animals, dogs specifically and I know I'm going to love that dog to death ;_;

Don't let the sunny vibrant colors fool you. Personally, I think we are in for a pretty dark story. Most likely darker than IV. Especially with Michael's character. He's the "root" character after all. If it wasn't his decision to return to crime, then we probably wouldn't even have a game. His short temper and big ego could bring them all down, as well as his family. I think there may be a dark side to Michael we have yet to see. It's possible we could see Michael slowly turn into the antagonist... but we still root for him. Maybe the FIB wants him betray Trevor and Michael in exchange for his freedom. Who knows. I can guarantee though that Michael will be the driving force of the whole story.

What I keep wondering is if Michael's family even knows if he used to be a criminal. If they don't, then that truly is going to be interesting... especially since he's about to return to crime.

This is something I've also wondered, I mean, I'm convinced his wife knows because what could he say to make up for the ridiculously hefty bank account? He could be a con artist, say he's in the FIB, perhaps, who knows.

It's possible he lied to her about where he got the money. It seems like all she cares about is his money... so I doubt she really cares where it came from. But, if she knew it came from crime, then she might reconsider. I don't know. I honestly can't wait to find out. Out of all 3 characters, I'm most excited for Michael's story. There's just so many parallels to Breaking Bad with him.

It seems as if that he married her & had children as a desparate attempt to manuver his way out of crime and conform to his fortune and domesticated life, so you may be right, he seems very secretive to me in a very similar fashion to Walter White.

Honestly, I'm equally excited for all of them - they're all such interesting and seemingly enriched characters and I can't wait to get to know them.

I don't think it'll be as emotionally wrenching as GTA IV. The way Niko described things he had gone through made me feel for the guy. Refer to the quote in my sig which IMO is the most confronting thing Niko says in GTA IV thus my favourite quote. I just don't see Michael, Trevor or Franklin going that deep.

However I can see it being pretty "dark". I thought MP3 in alot of ways was darker than GTA IV.

Also, Michael is the mentor to Franklin just as Walt is the mentor to Jesse. icon14.gif

As for Michael's domestic life, I think at one point he decided it would be best to just move on with his life and retire. Makes you wonder how he got such a sweet deal with the FIB. But anyway, I think after years of his new family life, he gets tired of it. He's in his early 40's... so it's possible he has a sort of mid-life crisis. That could be the main reason he decides to get back into crime. Could be the only thing he really cares about. The "rush."

Rockstar has a way of mixing the two. In IV, brucie then dwayne. I think theyll continue their mixture

I hope so. I really hope they go as far as heavy rain in terms of the amount of emotion. If they don't have emotion in the story then gta will go down on my list of favourite game series.

I hope they get back to some of the more over the top feel from the past. One of the things that made the previous gen GTA's so great was that the storylines never got too serious. It wasn't trying to be "deep". I loved San Andreas because it was so over the top, and it just stayed fun throughout the entire story because it never tried to get too serious. I also loved GTAIV, but it lost a little bit of that GTA feel. RDR was PERFECT for an emotionally deeper experience, but i hope GTAV is a bit lighter like the past games.

Emotionally, this doesn't even feel like a GTA game anymore. I think I stopped caring about it. I looked over the screenshots again and instead of a lived in world, it looks plain and lifeless. It just seems so generic. I don't know what it is, but it's definitely lacking that GTA vibe.

I hope that GTA V would be a masterpiece. Gameplay-wise, sure. Story-wise? We'll have to wait.

I'd be more than glad if it has a really, really good story, funny, emotional, and happy at the same time. Bring in the sadness, R*! We wouldn't mind. A great story, with a bit of everything. I'd like that.

I know I know, quoting the OP. I'll get my f*ckin' flame suit.

Personally I hope it explores the entire emotional spectrum. Happy, wacky, silly, greedy, crazy, insane, sad, devastated, scared, confident, and so on.

That IS what you meant by emotional, right?

Absolutely! as stated above, a bit of everything would be great.

It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, it'll make you gag and sometimes, it'll make you angry.

If R* can accurately take their audience on an emotional rollercoaster, they've done their job excellently.

so generic and lifeless!!!! how could you say it lacks a GTA vibe by only looking at a few beta screenshots? that's silly man.

I hope it has a real deep storyline but I would have preferred it been focused around one character rather than 3. I can't see how they're gonna make a deep and emotionally provoking storyline when they'll have to cut it short to accommodate all 3 characters but hopefully they'll manage to do it

I hope it's a bit more lighthearted than MP3, GTA IV and RDR, the ending in RDR shocked me, even though I knew it was gonna happen, it still left me speechless, I love the connection, but I think they can give us a wider spectrum and still have us be attached.

I don't think it will be very emotional.

Trailer 2 made GTA look like a family comedy.

Lol.

I think that GTA IV did exceptionally well with its storyline; and Rockstar have vastly improved in the storytelling departments when it comes to their games as well and it will no doubt improve again in GTA V when it comes to a deep, meaningful and emotionally charged storyline. I would only think that the storytelling in GTA V will only improve in almost every aspect over GTA IV's storyline.

I don't think GTA V's storyline will be as dark or as deep as GTA IV's though, and IMO it will likely have more of the comic-relief type characters to counteract the more serious characters which will take the storyline down a more light-hearted approach. As also mentioned, none of the three protagonists, with the exception of maybe Michael, don't go quite as deep as Niko does when it comes to their personal history and their hands on experience but then again, we don't know all that much about the three protagonists either when it comes to this so this could very well change.

I know. I didn't mention anything about the storyline not being a happy one if you had read my post - I was simply stating that Rockstar will improve yet again with GTA V when it comes to the telling of a "deep, meaningful and emotional storyline" - nowhere did I specifically mention GTA V's storyline would be an upsetting one so I suggest you read my post again wink.gif. As I also said in my post, all GTA's have had their humour (which can be considered happiness) and light-hearted content (i.e; Trevor) intertwined with more serious stuff and GTA V won't be any different in this regard.

I also mentioned Michael having a darker toned storyline arc as, although he is on the surface living the good life - he is far from contempt as his wife is spending all of his money which will only lead to him becoming more and more annoyed and disjointed from his family as the story progresses and thus; would only serve to lead to drama and emotion. Then again though, this could completely turn around; Michael becomes contempt with his family life by the end of the storyline and they live happily ever after. But knowing that this is GTA, I could not see this being the case IMO.

It would make me VERY happy if GTA v triggers strong emotions in me, just like some movies and the ending of RDR ( ;( ) did. It would just help me enjoy the game a lot more.
