T0X1C
I know that they said that each NPC would basically have their own life, I still can't get my head around that. If, lets say, you wait outside a random house until an NPC exits and follow them, would they actually go somewhere rather than just drive around randomly? I noticed that in trailer 2 a car is seen driving into the office building across from Michael's home. I certainly hope that the NPC in that car would get out and walk up to his/her office and get on with his/her job, rather than just walk away onto the street, never to return. At 17:00 in-game time, would you expect to see that same NPC get into his/her same car and drive home? The next morning would you see that SAME NPC get in his/her car, drive to the same office and get to work just as the previous day? Rockstar seem to have given new life to NPCs, for example in trailer 1 you can see friends jogging together and 2 girlfriends checking them out. You can see a woman checking out Franklin as he puts his roof down. You can see farm workers coughing as they are sprayed with insecticide. Unless these are just cut scenes it's pretty clear that NPCs are far more interactable with the protagonists, each other and their surroundings. In GTA 4 the only way to interact with a ped was to hit them/aim at them with a weapon/hit them with a vehicle/walk into them in a weird, pedo/molestor way. So I think it's clear that they are better, but will they be as "real," as stated above? I know they said each NPC has their own life, do you think it will be to such an extent? I can't even imagine how they could achieve this. What do you think?
Bonfy
I think you're setting your hopes too high. If this was Skyrim (hope you played it, so you'll understand what I'm saying), where there are a fixed number of NPC, each one manually scripted, and where every building is accessible, it would work. Each NPC in that game has his own routine and jobs to do and you can follow it all day long and what he's doing would make sense. In GTA, instead, NPCs just spawn, plus they are not unique. Plus buildings are not accessible (most of them). I think different types of NPCs will have different routines around the city (like for example the gardeners, whom routine was described in the GI article I think), but you won't see every single of them live a proper "life". Simply go from A to B, perform C, get back imo. Maybe a bit more complicated but not much.

Yeah I'm nervous that I've set my hopes too high, but for me if the said each NPC has their own life it means that they actually have their own life which they live on a day to day basis. simonp92
Are you sure they said that ever? As far as I know they were saying that about the 3 protagonists.
Trund
Here's a short history of things: R* said this will be in GTA SA -> fact. R* said this will be in GTA IV -> fact. R* said this will be in GTA V -> I tend to believe things that R* claim when I see them with my own eyes. I suggest you to wait and keep your expectations low, then you won't get disappointed. Adriaan
They didn't exactly say "each NPC" is going about their own life. Just that, there are some examples of that going on - like the gardener who gets on a bus and goes to a workplace to do gardening. This is not Sim City where every NPC is running a life simulation. You should email [email protected] to ask this question for a future Ask & Answered.

If there's something like this for all NPC models that's reasonably sophisticated then I'll be happy. They'd never tell some random fan about an in game feature. dinoSAUR230
It's called 'state machines' and yes I'm excited as it means vehicles, public transport and cops would also work like this but no I don't think that we should hope too high. I am very interested though - some people are saying when they get the game they will immediatley steal a jet and jump off mt whatever on a bike but personally I'm gonna follow some peds and investigate this thang

AlphaWaveMovement
A few quotes which apply to peds: "to get beyond the city as just a back drop or a game level with pedestrians milling about and instead make it feel like part of a real world with distinct areas and individuals going about their lives, a real place that you can visit and exist within. " "whatever you can see, and you can see a lot is fully realised, fully resolved, filled with unique characters, vehicles, missions..." "what we find is that although the number of pedestrians is reduced wandering around the streets, there are always people actually doing things or hanging out. We have written a system to handle this. Creating people and cars doing specific things around the map scheduled throughout the day. You can see gardeners and cleaners waiting at bus stops in East LS in the morning then find them tending the gardens and houses in our Beverly Hills during the day. The system does a lot to bring the world to life and it's key to giving each area the proper flavour" Sounds like a huge step up from IV to be honest, and more like RDR. epicluca
They sort of had it in RDR. People would be doing their own thing but I don't think you could see them actually go to it, like you just saw someone on a grind wheel but you wouldn't see them leave and go to Blackwater then come back. R* can easily bring this over and advance it, like you'll see people walk into shops and buy stuff, people on a lunch break that get up and go back to work. To save system memory it will probably be in a certain radius, so at 1 PM you see some guy eating lunch, then you leave that area, and if you somehow find him again then it will re-activate and he will be doing something else. But he won't always be doing it even when you're gone.
