So... we know and trust GameInformer don't we?

http://www.videogamer.com/news/rumour_xbox...c_in_march.html

http://fudzilla.com/home/item/30122-next-g...r-than-we-think

Short version: PS4/Xbox720 (aka Orbis/Durango) might be shown off (or at least talked about) as soon as March 25, possibly a few days earlier.

With V's release window probably still being "Spring 2013" - has your opinion on the exact month changed?

This is not meant as a discussion thread about MS or Sony or Nintendo or PC vs. Console or anything like that; please try to stick to the question or discussion of the GI report.

Personally I'm not quite sure either way; R* seem to like doing things their own way, regardless of what others do; but if they had a choice between "release before new consoles become a big subject and patch 2 weeks later" or "become the 2nd most talked about thing for gamers" they might opt for the first solution imho.

While we're on the topic of next gen consoles:

http://fudzilla.com/home/item/30121-don%E2...720-to-be-cheap

If a mod comes along: I'd love to add "Yes, might come a little earlier" to the top and "No, still not sure when exactly" + "Other, please explain"to the bottom of the poll. Thx!

This probably won't affect GTA v's release date. Imo they'll still release it in spring and they probably wont make any changes to their schedule due to a new gen of consoles coming. I believe they'll have much less sales if the games are on next gen because many won't have the next gen consoles for a while. Again, these are all my opinions.

Yeah, I don't think there's a big chance we'll see V on next gen consoles (except for 360/PS3 backwards compatibility perhaps).

Like I said, I could go either way. But I tend towards "Yes, might come a little earlier".

No, this will not impact on the release of GTA V. Also, the key word is might. And even if Sony and Microsoft are to announce the PS4 and Xbox 720 in March, it would have absolutely no bearing on the development of GTA V and the next gen consoles probably wouldn't be released until later this year or well into next year if they are announced, and that falls well outside of the estimated release time-frame for GTA V.

Furthermore, if GTA V were to be pushed back until after the next gen console releases, it wouldn't be a very good business decision to release a game such as GTA V on consoles that not many people are going to own. Think of GTA V as the GTA: San Andreas of the current generation.

Above: may I ask where you got that impression? I thought 2013 had finally become the consensus on all gaming sites, though it's been pretty obvious since early 2012 imho. I don't mean to be rude but I just don't see what could point to such a late release.

DTUMan: Well, what about games as system movers? Of course most people that wanted a 360 or PS3 already have one by now but if you read some of the threads in this section you'll see that many people are still asking "should I get a PS3, 360 or PC for V?".

I think some of those people might be swayed into saving their money for 6 more months and getting a PS4/720 instead... unless of course V is out before any of those next gen events happen. It's just business.

Regardless of what the gaming sites say, it's just my gut feeling. They may be announced soon but we are going to wait for their arrival, and there are still a lot of current gen AAA titles on the horizon.

It doesn't matter if GTA 5 is a system seller. There's like 70 million consoles worldwide (correct me if I'm wrong).

Next-gen consoles won't have that for years.

Would you release GTA this gen, or next gen, just to 'sell' the console?

If you pick the latter, please never own anything remotely important in your life, or have to do with anything that involves selling things.

I really don't see how this will influence GTAV's release date.

Not sure if you're suggesting they'd hold back the release date to be a next-gen launch title?

I think you may not have read all I wrote; I explicity stated that I do not think V will (or should) come to next gen consoles, except for the backwards compatibility way.

What I said was that selling something is much easier if you're the "#1 hot thing", not #2. And if they release V after the next gen consoles are announced they will be talk subject #2 among gamers, not #1.

That's all. The other thing I said was that people who were planning on buying a current gen console shortly before V releases might overthink it and skip V in favor of buying a next gen console a few months later.

Adriaan: see above; oh, and could you perhaps edit the poll as I asked in the OP? That would be nice, thx.

Above: I see. Personally I'm in favor of new consoles asap but to each his own.

But the new hardware won't come out until the end of the year...

They're only going to start unveiling, showcasing, and marketing it starting in Spring. This is how it's always worked. Spend around 6+ months fighting for attention, showing to the public which one is best - and then release it.

Even if this is true, I don't see how it matters. Are you saying humans can only be excited about one thing at a time? The difference here is that GTAV is something people can get their hands on right away in Spring. The new hardware is something exciting, yeah, but a long ways off...

Actual awesome game you can play is better than a piece of hardware in terms of excitement icon14.gif

But the new hardware won't come out until the end of the year...

I can see people don't agree with my standpoint too much, that's ok. We'll have to play the waiting game for a while yet anyway.

Adriaan, I don't see where we disagree. I am aware that we won't be able to buy (official) PS4s and 720s before (probably) October or November; but if V releases in April for example, add 6 months to that (like I said AND you said) and then it's October. And then the next gen consoles will get released. And that's my point. Why buy (obviously) old hardware between now and April/May just to play 1 game if you can buy brand new hardware for a (more or less) similar amount of money 6 months later? That wouldn't make any sense, unless of course you have the money for both but not everybody does or wants to spend it.

So V sales might suffer a little because of that; unless they move it to a date before that reveal/event, which will make people aware of the new consoles and possibly overthink their spendings.

And no, I'm not saying humans can only concentrate on one thing at a time, come on... you know precisely what I meant. If you're the big cheese it's easy to sell your stuff.

But if you're a video game company that is about to release a game very, very, very close to the reveal of entirely new platforms which will no doubt make your game seem much less exciting than before you might want to maximize your profits by stepping on the gas pedal. Face it, most people are looking for great graphics, big maps, detailed characters, great audio/video in high quality etc - and most gamers are suckers for new tech. So if we see 20 great looking games that all make V look like yesterday's news hype levels might sink, thus lower sales numbers. Not from us "hardcore" fans obviously but from casual buyers, or kids who want to be cool.

GTA:SA was released for PS2 in October of 2004 and for PC and Xbox in June 2005; the Xbox 360 console was released November/December 2005 so they had a 5-6 (or 13-14 from PS2 release) month gap before the first of the current generation consoles were released. Same thing this time around. I'm not sure anymore when the 360 was first announced but there is certainly a pattern here.

They obviously want to get their "big" games for the current gen consoles out before the next gen comes around; so why does it not make sense to you to get it released before talk about the next gen even really begins in the mainstream media?

no it wont effect it, even if it did, I wont be buying one until I know they're not gonna be rushed and plagued with issues.

2013 is still the year of current-gen. Next-gen will be launching at the end of the year and start becoming people's focus during 2014. GTA V will have been out for about a year before the new hardware is in a decent amount of homes.

This is the absolute peak of current-gen, there has not a better time to launch a game on 360/PS3.

R* said themselves that they're releasing it for the current generation because they have toyed with the technology and know how to use it properly, and will try to make the best outcome they can for this gen.

Even I think it is stupid to actually pull on the release date so that way you can make the deadline for the current-gen's soon-to-be burial. As Knife said himself, the current generation consoles are still going to be in people's homes for quite a while before people begin to dump their XBOX 360s and PS3s for the new ones that will probably be priced higher than what they purchased the console for.

houser already stated that anything to do with the next gen consoles has nothing to do with gta 5. he explicitly stated that they AVOIDED the next gen thing and they are NOT INTERESTED at this moment in time.

so no next gen has no bearing on gta5 what so ever!!!!!!!!

Bump.

http://kotaku.com/5980715/is-sony-going-to...-on-february-20

Sony just posted this video on the PlayStation blog. Looks like a teaser for the next PlayStation (code-named Orbis), don't you think? It ends with a date: February 20, 2013. Will Sony announce their next console then?

We've heard bits and pieces about the next PlayStation for quite some time now, and rumors have been swirling that both Sony and Microsoft's next-generation consoles will be announced this year, likely before E3. Although Sony has kept quiet about plans for their successor to the PlayStation 3, released in 2006, the Japanese game-maker is expected to release a new console either later this year or in early 2014.

This event will take place in New York City on February 20 at 6pm Eastern. That's only five days before the company's annual Destination PlayStation event kicks off in Arizona, where retailers are shown the biggest and best games on Sony's plate for the year ahead.

So next gen consoles to be announced in less than 3 weeks and GTA V postponed by 4 months, all on the same day.

Yeah, this will end well for R*. icon14.gif

Just for the record: before the bump 30% of people voted "No - still May", 25% of people voted "No - next gen consoles won't be shown that soon" and only 8% of people voted for "No - GTA V won't make it for spring anyway".

So next gen consoles to be announced in less than 2 weeks

Doubtful.

Quite in line with what GI and fudzilla posted recently, just earlier. Doubtful - maybe. Possible - very.

EDIT: Excuse me, I meant 3 weeks obviously.

No, this is a teaster for the convention they are hosting in February 20.

They will most likely reveal it during that.
