I don't like Trevor much. With guys like Michael and Franklin, I can fathom their motives. A man may become a criminal for money or power or status.

What is Trevor's motivation? He dresses like a hobo. If he runs a drug-business or even gun-running, why doesn't he dress the part? The man has no self respect, no class, he's a nobody, a non-entity. He's about one step up from headbutting old women for their handbags.

And above that, as a drug user, he's weak and undisciplined. I hope Michael cuts him loose as soon as it becomes convenient to do so.

Basically Trevor represents criminal freedom... a "f*ck what people think" mentality. I agree he's pretty much scum of the Earth... but we've never played a GTA protagonist like him... someone who completely revels in chaos. Everyone else has had a motive, but Trevor just... how should I put this... he just "goes with it." He embraces the fact that he's a criminal... and he honestly doesn't give a sh*t about society.

If he has any kind of motive, it may be maintaining his drug/gun enterprise. Other than that, I think he's just doing all this because he can. icon14.gif

What I like about Mr Phillips is that he does't seem contrived or full of bullsh*t. A Mexican protg? Please! Why not have them all holding hands and dancing under a rainbow as well  sarcasm.gif

What the hell does wanting a mexican protag has to do with a rainbow flag. It would be a great representation of Los Angles Jack ass. You take your ass to los angles to one of those mexicans and say that.

I don't know what Rockstar are playing at. How are you gonna have a game based on LA and not have a Hispanic protagonist ?? LA is symbolic of Mexican-American people and culture. A Hispanic guy should have been the third protagonist, not Trevor. Like someone who had ties to cartels and Chicano street gangs, I'd have loved that so much.

@ Racecarlock

You can still have fun and mayhem, no matter who the protagonist is. All that stuff in GTA has always been a fixed, but peripheral part of the experience, it's not going anywhere, so you don't need to keep b*tching about the 'fun' and 'mayhem' being taken away from GTA. The point being made here is why some like myself don't like or don't wanna see Tvevor in the game.

Maybe they know it would just feel contrived, forced and completely uninspired? Thats why theyre making the game youre not. Ive nothing against Mexicans but they cant do it like that, one of each race?! Nah man, either theyre all Mexicans or none of them are.

@ AlphaWaveMovement

Listen man,

I don't know what the f**k you are on about, because your comment don't quite make full sense to me. Rockstar could have made a Mexican protagonist and they can do whatever they want. I know they will make whatever game they want at the end of day, of course they will - but it don't mean that everything Rockstar does is perfect or unquestionable. What is so uninspiring about a Mexican protagonist ? There is a wealth of storyline material, drug cartels, Chicano street gangs, people trafficking, cross-border smuggling etc. You have no idea of what you are talking about. And what do you mean all 3 would have to be Mexican ? How comes in GTA V, two are white and one is black ?? You contradicted yourself and make no sense.

@ GTA-King

Interesting analysis of Trevor's role in GTA. BUt, I still find him uninteresting. OK he loves being a criminal, he's crazy, wild and don't give a sh*t. But, so what ?? Woow, what's so exceptional about that ? That alone does not excite me about a GTA protagonist. There is not enough substance or depth to a protagonist like that.

Trevor wasn't very well liked when his artwork was unvealed. As soon as he was shown jumping out of a plane and crashing two trains together he became an overnight hero.

So true. I agree with everything you've posted so far.

Although, let's be honest here. A lot of the hate for Trevor comes from the fact that he is the ugliest prick we've ever seen in GTA. Vercetti was sort of the same as Trevor, but he was flashy and kept it real. Plus he didn't look like George Costanza.

LOL some people really do hate everybody lol He did have some valid points though lol

@Marcx you must have never read some his post regarding Franklin lol he really does hate everybody lol. I dont see how he is racist but loves Micheal lol

I didn't said eh was racist. dozingoff.gif he's an stupid attention whore.

"he really does hate everybody lol"

yet he took his time to bitch about the protagonist he hates, makes sense.

He should try to get off his high horse, he thinks he's better than the people he's insulting.

But that kind of character has no basis in reality. It's a kind of comic book nihilism you'd see asociated with The Joker or some other fantastical character.

Criminals are driven either by greed, desperation or perversion.

I honestly can't comprehend the idea of some guy intentionally living in a trailer, living like a transient, making money and blowing it on drugs and doing it for fun. It makes no sense.

Are we supposed to pity this man? Will he have any depth? To me, he represents the worst aspects of the series. Mindless escapism and fetishtic violence without any regard for storytelling or good characterisation.

We shall see, of course. But at the moment he looks like an embodiment of everything I despise about these games.

Well, you have your opinion, and we have ours. It's really as simple as that man.

I agree a Mexican protagonist would have been cool, considering how prominent the cartel is out west. But the fact is, we don't... so I'm not going to get all bent up about it. icon14.gif

@Typhus: Like I've said before, I'm sure there is a certain layer of depth we have yet to see with Trevor, and by that I mean his storyline.

OP, nice topic and read. You certainly got a point. Even though I don't exactly "hate" Trevor, I share some of your reasons about how & why Rockstar put in Trevor.

I also assume he got put into the trinity as the last.

When I first saw captures of him, I liked how Rockstar created him, his looks, like, balding, scruffy, his maniac look...I thought most people would despise him. Only to find out, he is the most loved.

Now I really got into the idea of the character Michael.

Somehow I'm not too keen on Trevor anymore.

Trevor wasn't very well liked when his artwork was unvealed. As soon as he was shown jumping out of a plane and crashing two trains together he became an overnight hero.

And why do you think that is? Because that's exactly what most people want to do when they buy a GTA game. Cause all sorts of crazy mayhem. The other two guys have the story bit locked down. Trevor just gives the people who don't like breaking character a chance to still get involved in a lot of crazy mayhem.

That's why people like him.

Trevor is a modern day Diogenes and you will learn to love and respect him. That's all you need to know.

As for the Cartel and Mexican Street gangs I'm sure they will get some heavy representation but it doesn't mean they have to shoehorn a Mexican protagonist in there so they can tick some pointless racial representation check box. That's not how the creative process works. Im not saying Rockstar are perfect but theyre better than that.

I for one am glad to have 3 protagonists to balance out the players freedom, and with someone like Michael and Franklin already put in place, Trevor, the chaotic, trashy, "don't give a f*ck about anything guy" being accompanied with the likes of Michael and Franklin create a good combination in my book.

One day, after thier parents pay for all thier education for them, they will be useful members of society but for now they are useless.

GTA III

Vice City

San Andreas

BOGT

Trevor represents everything we want to do in GTA. Blow up sh*t, fly planes, and not give a f*ck. He's exactly the protagonist that the players who don't like to break character need to blow of some steam and just go on a rampage.

If you really think mindless escapism and fetishistic violence are the worst parts of this series, then I would suggest you look at some other games.

Name even one crime game as polished as Grand Theft Auto. If you can do that, I'd gladly give it a shot.

It's the only game in town. Honestly though, I just wish it was more realistic. Tanks and fighter jets, I really loathe that kind of nonsense.

I'm a much bigger fan of storytelling and strong characters as opposed to zany violence and toilet humour.

Red Dead Redemption showed that Rockstar can create mature, emotional games. So why does their flagship series have to remain mired in such infantile theatrics? I've grown up, my tastes have evolved, maybe going on killing sprees isn't amusing anymore, maybe I see games as an art form that should be bigger than the sum of their parts.

But by all means, reply to this with more YouTube videos. Whatever makes it easier to write me off.

I also feel Trevor works on a symbolic storytelling level. It's obvious that he's meant to be pretty much the opposite of Michael, which allows us to experience some great extremes as player with him being a protagonist, while also allowing him to be a great foil to the other two characters. But I also think he will surprise those who think he will be like The Joker or something. He has been described as loyal, and somewhat sentimental. These qualities may help us sympathize with the character during certain situations. Like they said, these are characters they're making, not cyphers. Crazy loose cannons are fun characters, but they almost always have a little bit more to them than just that basic description. I doubt Trevor will be an exception.

I've grown up, my tastes have evolved, maybe going on killing sprees isn't amusing anymore, maybe I see games as an art form that should be bigger than the sum of their parts.

But by all means, reply to this with more YouTube videos. Whatever makes it easier to write me off.

Because it is first & foremost a game and we had the serious & restrained GTA with IV.

Believe it or not, there is one crime game out there that is polished and I think you'd love. Mafia II.

Forget planes and tanks, this game doesn't even have bikes or boats in it. What it does have is exactly what you sound like you're looking for. So, enjoy I guess.

I'm afraid that if I were to thoroughly define 'useless' you'd realize you are that and in turn would probably rage and bitch even more.

I think his parents wasted thier(sic) money on his education. biggrin.gif Unfortunately the 'I' before 'E', except after 'C' doesn't always work.

as far as i recall, its more often wrong than not

@Racecarlock

LOL, I was thinking of that exact game when reading that post. Took itself way to seriously & little fun to be had outside of missions.

@poiuytrew

Come to think of it, it's a pretty useless rhyme.
