Typhus
I think it looks ugly as hell. It's just the design, it's horrendous. I usually like tall skyscrapers, but not in this case. The body of it, with those cylinder things with the rings around them remind of the board game "frustration". They look like the little pieces you have to move around the board. The top part looks similar to a woman's lipstick, and the overall building just looks fat and chunky. For me it's not elegant or visually appealing, it's just a big weird monstrosity. They said similar things about the Eiffel Tower when it was built, you know.

Fun fact: There was a French writer (can't remember the name) who hated the Eiffel Tower so much that whenever he chose to eat in a restaurant he would choose the one atop the structure simply because he couldn't see it. I think it's rather futuristic looking. Whilst buildings like the Empire State look incredible with it's early art-deco feel going on, I love it when buildings look like they're so ahead of their time, that even long after I'm gone it will still be classy and stylish. They said similar things about the Eiffel Tower when it was built, you know. They compared it to women's lipstick and children's board games? But seriously though, I'm sure they did. The Eiffel Tower is pretty ugly looking as well. But I'd say people celebrate it because it is the biggest icon of Paris and France, and has so much history attached to it. It's not necessarily because of it's aesthetic beauty, although I'm sure there are still plenty of people that do appreciate that as well. If this new tower is built, I don't doubt that 100 years later people would be calling it a great icon as well. But the Eiffel Tower was unique for it's time, and was also an impressive endeavour. This new tower isn't unique, and it's construction won't be particularly ground breaking other than that it will break the record for tallest structure for a brief period of time. It will be surpassed itself in less than a decade, probably in a lot less time than that. The Eiffel Tower is special, but this new tower won't be. Anyway I'm detracting from my main point, which is that this new tower is ugly as f*ck.
DEALUX
^I don't get it either, building upwards is not only f*cking cool, but it saves space, honestly I think it is amazing walking through cities with giant buildings. I'm afraid we're more keen on our sh*tty little cottages and country houses. Everyone seems absolutely obsessed with the countryside over here. Probably why I want to leave this country one day and go somewhere that's not stuck in the 1950's. Tall buildings need more spacing between them so that sunlight can get through. It's not very productive to have many tall buildings in one place and it's a health hazard for anyone working in offices in those buildings. Adler
I will inevitably admire it as an awesome engineering feat... but thats all it will be. Tourism anyone? Holding a record and making the news for doing so is really going to put your country/city's name on the map. The Azeri oil industry will decline eventually and they must make ventures elsewhere to continue to prosper.

Triple Vacuum Seal
I love human construction mega-projects and think it's absolutely stunning. Critical Response: On the other hand, what more than "we will erect a taller buildings than yours" do skyscrapers even mean anymore? It mainly seems like an Asian trend now more than anything. In terms of creativity, we need to move beyond just the height nowadays. That's how many skyscrapers got redundant in America for some time. Max
It looks absolutely beautiful. I really hope it gets completed.Honestly though, I've never understood why my country has such a hatred of these kind of buildings. We have the Shard, but very little else. I wish we had the ambition and the modern-thinking to try something like this. Oh, and the waterway leading up to the building looks wonderful. As a Londoner I would absolutely hate to see such obnoxiously tall buildings springing up around my city. That's not to say these buildings don't have their place. They fit right into some artificial urban landscapes; thrown up on the whim of some despot or other, reaching to the sky in a bid to show the world how 'progressive' this authoritarian backwater wishes to appear. They look cool, but they only make sense within the context of their city. A building over 1000m tall next to the Oxo tower or Harrods would look f*cking stupid. It just isn't the same atmosphere. If all cities conformed to these abstract ideals of 'modernism' (although I highly doubt this is primarily expressed through phallic architecture) then so much of the wonder of the past would be lost. Are you suggesting that the Dome of St Paul's Church is somehow lessened in value by the Empire State Building? Or that the Empire State building is now irrelevant because of the Burj? Not to mention the cost. Oil Billions may by you a Skyscraper in the East but try raising my Oyster Card fair for a Building I can see Newcastle from and I'm kicking off. Moonshield
I can appreciate a lot of things about this, but to me it's just utterly pointless. I'm pretty sure that 2 billion dollars can have a much more significant and beneficial impact if used for something we actually need e.g. scientific research, charities, and so on. Maybe I don't understand the politics involved in the whole thing or why a tall building would be better than any of the other options, but that's how I see it. A colossal waste of money. Good art is never a waste of money. lol.

No. I'm suggesting that our country is pathetically obsessed with rural life and I feel as if no one in the UK can see the beauty of cities and all the buildings therein. I'm sick of America having so many wonderful bridges and skyscrapers and our country still fawning over cobbled streets and quaint knick-knack shops. NaidRaida
I don't need one mile tall buildings. Twenty centimeters is all you need.
